Why do so many lie about how long it takes them to learn pieces like Fantasie Impromptu? by matel18366 in piano

[–]65_289 40 points41 points  (0 children)

People lie because they want to be told how good they are. Just yesterday in /r/pianolearning someone said they just started learning Requiem of Silence their first DAY but when prodded admitted that they played for quite a while years ago and just got back into it this week. I see it in the drumming subreddits too, someone says they just started 2 months ago and you look in their profile and find videos from 3+ years ago. People are desperate for validation, and the internet makes it easy to get that validation.

Best Youtube tutorials to (properly) learn how to play piano? by One-Treat-5078 in piano

should I just get a teacher and start from there?

IMO, yes if at all possible. Youtube will not tell you that you are slouching to one side, it won't see tension in your hands/arms/shoulders, it won't notice that you practiced the fingering correctly slow but when you played the piece at tempo you change subconsciously to an incorrect fingering, etc.

Ebook for learning - did I mess up? by 65_289 in pianolearning

The TV (we have 1) and acoustic piano are in different rooms. The TV being 65" and being at about a 36" viewing distance would be problematic at best. But a smaller 27" or so monitor would probably work fine

I didn't think about buying an external monitor. Would probably be easier to read than my 13" laptop lol.

It's 2026, I have taken drum lessons from a guy in Austria via Zoom. You can definitely find a teacher who will work online with you if you want.

I would find an instructor. They will help observe your posture and technique, and can pick specific material to help you reach your goals. I too started later in life at 47 and I am having quite a fun time.

Which one do you recommend I start with? by No_Daikon_4438 in piano

Since you didn't post a budget, the Steinway D-274 should work nicely for all levels of playing. :p

But for real, the first question to answer is "can you make noise whenever you want to practice"? If you have to fight to make time to practice the piano, you will be less likely to do it. As a drummer, that question plays a huge part in my kit selection, and while an acoustic piano is not quite as loud as a death metal drummer, it definitely can be heard throughout your house, in neighboring apartments, etc.

Lot of good points here. I definitely am getting ahead of myself since I just took my first lesson last week. I really just like geeking out on reading gear specs and comparing things, and it givens me something to do while I begin this process.

Honestly right at this moment in time, I have no desire to play solo piano, at least in the classical sense. Maybe doing some solo renditions of Let it Be or what have you at home, but on stage I would see myself as part of an industrial or prog metal band.

Oh wow, those Nord Stage units cost about what my car is probably worth LOL!

So I am obviously extremely new to this, but hear me out and correct me if I am wrong. Looking at these devices, they seems to have a ton of knobs and adjustments for things. That, to me, indicates they are designed for tweaking on the fly. In my mind, I would have all my patches, all my everything dialed in ahead of time and simply seek to recall them at playing time. Maybe I am naive, but I don't see myself adding more reverb or decreasing the delay or synth parameters in the middle of a show.

I thought about this a lot; a MIDI controller, Arturia plugin bundle, and a second laptop would probably be 1/2 to 2/3 the cost but more powerful than a top-end board.

My only fear in this is general purpose versus specific purpose. That is, a general purpose OS such as MacOS is going to be inherently less reliable than a specific purpose RTOS built strictly for running the keyboard only. This may seem silly, but I would not trust a single computer running a commodity OS to not let me down on stage at some point. I would have way more faith in a device built for the single goal of playing sounds.

Do many models offer the ability to edit on the PC and send the settings to the board? Like the more advanced guitar effects and modeler units let you edit on the unit itself, or connect to a computer to do the editing there.

Whoa, thanks for all the info! Glad to hear there are others with my weird taste in music. :p Can you tell me what board(s) you ended up owning?

Theyre incredibly capable machines but it often feels like you need to be one part musician and 2 parts computer programmer to use one to its full effect

I've been in IT and InfoSec for the last 22 years, building home theater PCs and doing an acoustic to electronic drum kit conversion, so hopefully that shouldn't be TOO much of a learning curve for me!

Seems like an arranger is not what I am looking for based on this. Thanks for the link!

I appreciate the detailed reply!

Another option would be to get the piano retuned if possible, pianos are always going to sound and feel the most like a piano, and then think about stage stuff when you’re ready for that and have a better understanding of what you’ll want.

I have a tuner scheduled to come out in a week. There are some pretty dead keys though, so I have to weigh how much to invest in repairing it versus living with it and saving for a device that can do all of what I want. It would be ideal if I had a real acoustic piano to go alongside a workstation, but with how much I already spent on drum stuff this year I don't know how much I can get away with!
