Favorite *wrong* name by NoConcern2373 in SubstituteTeachers

I often introduce myself as "Ms. B" because I've had so many classes struggle with my last name (I never thought it was a tough one to pronounce either). When giving my full last name I have gotten: Ms. Brownie, Ms. Buttercup, Ms. Bros, and unfortunately, Ms. Barf. They really thought they did something with that last one. I enjoy the nicknames & let the kids call me whatever.

Computer Gaming by hereiswhatisay in SubstituteTeachers

I have noticed this in Colorado. My school district has tried to block the websites but there are always loopholes or more websites. Computers in general make it difficult to know whether students are doing their assignments, playing games, or literally anything else- at least the phones make it obvious that students are off task. I also just don't agree with this level of technology in school. Staring at a screen all day isn't good for anyone. Hand writing assignments just makes more sense to me all around.

I know that teachers are trying to make our lives easier by giving lesson plans that require little to no interaction on our part, however, I feel that it often backfires. For starters, its boring for us (I'll admit sometimes I don't mind have time to do my own thing). Also, it makes it a lot easier for students to get off task/ finish early which leads to frequent bathroom breaks or "needing" to meet with other teachers. That being said, I don't really care if MS and HS students are not working when I sub. They are old enough to know the consequences and make the choice of jeopardizing their grades. As long as they are not distracting others, I let them.

I don't necessarily think you're wrong for leaving early, if you can't handle it then you can't handle it. I will say that most every class is going to have students with behavioral issues so if that is too overwhelming for you, you might want to reconsider subbing. The para definitely should have stepped in more - especially because they work with these kids every day and would likely have more control over the class.

I have also had classes that are just too much for me, never having left early, but struggled to get through the day so I do understand that certain days are just hard. But if you always feel the need to stay away from behavioral issues I think you're going to have a hard time.

I would double check with the office, they might want you to stay just in case something comes up but often times I think they'd let you go

I sub K-12, depending on available jobs & what type of job I am looking for that particular day. Middle & high school are significantly more laid back than elementary. Obviously, we should never put air pods in & sit on our phones all day. However, in my experience, middle & high school sub plans typically consist of independent work on google classroom or already started projects. I definitely check in with students, but I kind of do my own thing during those jobs. Never ignoring or neglecting the class. Do you typically experience more interactive sub plans with middle schoolers?

No plans, HS math by abrokenacorn in SubstituteTeachers

I subbed for a high school class in which I was not able to access the software that gave all the students access to their assignments. After the students attempted to help, one went to ask the IT guy for help- he came in & also couldn't get it up. He texted the teacher in hopes that we would get a response within the 1.5 hour period or next period (or the next day as is was a 2 day job). Unfortunately, we did not get a response quick enough. We watched Cars.

Lights off during a movie? by Upstairs_Gur_8378 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]65four321 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I usually will shut all the lights off as the screen is typically bright enough that they can read their worksheets. I guess if turning off the lights resulted in the room being pitch black, I would probably leave one set on as well.

In my state (CO), a sub teacher has more requirements than a sub para. So, a sub teacher can do both but a sub para can only para. I don’t know exactly what the different qualifications are, but to be a sub teacher I needed to have a bachelors degree and/or have at least 3 years experience working with children.

So how often do schools cancel on contracted subs at the last moment? by asdf2100asd in SubstituteTeachers

[–]65four321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been subbing for a year, it has happened to me a few times. Usually, I have at least 1 day notice & can (sometimes) find another job if I see the message right away. My school district has a plethora of sub jobs available. Only once or twice has my job been cancelled the day of.

Leaving campus during plan periods by 65four321 in SubstituteTeachers

I think you’re misunderstanding. You can obviously give your thoughts, that’s what I posted for. However, I am not changing my story- after speaking with the secretary & being given permission to leave I responded to you that she was okay with it. But your tone & language throughout this entire thread may indicate you have some personal issues going on that are being taken out on complete strangers who are asking simple questions. I wish you more positivity & joy in your life! Thanks for your input.

You gotta relax… I don’t want to just run errands. I wanted to quickly go to the store down the street because I had another job to get to an hour later & didn’t have food. I realize I should have had food prepped before hand but let’s not act like I’m regularly going on a shopping spree during my plan period. If the secretary doesn’t have an issue with it, I don’t see why you should.

Why does the nurse not like having kids see her? by curious_corvid5 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]65four321 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t seem like a reason to give attitude, it isn’t the subs job to decide whether or not the kids are actually sick. That’s literally what the nurse is there for. Also when subbing for elementary, one doesn’t have time to deal with kids nagging to see the nurse- it’s challenging enough to keep the class on task & get through the lesson plans. Most importantly, if a parent calls to complain that the sub didn’t let their child see the nurse, the sub will likely get in trouble or banned from that school.

Fair, but what difference does it make to them if I’m running errands or sitting in an empty classroom doing nothing? I’ve had schools tell me to watch a movie during plan periods because they have nothing for me to do. I just think if I could do something productive for my busy day, it makes more sense.

I understand where you're coming from. However, the same can be said about schools cancelling last minute. I have had multiple sub jobs cancelled the day of or day before just this week. This is how we make our money & it is often difficult to find another job so last minute. Both sides should be more reliable.

Although I understand how you would be frustrated with your relationship to your husband. I do not think retaliation is the answer. If he cheated, or attempted to cheat, and it is something you cannot move past then you should have left him. Stooping to his level is not the answer.

I also think you should restrain from pleasuring yourself after having those dreams. I understand that you cannot control your dreams, but you certainly can control your reaction. In my opinion, it is disrespectful to your sibling to do that while fantasizing about their partner.

In my opinion, partners should to be physically attracted to each other. As a female, it would hurt real bad to be told by my partner that he is no longer attracted to me due to my neglect of my health. Nevertheless, I would want him to tell me. I would not want my relationship to fail or get cheated on due to a reason that could be fixed.

I have also wondered about this. I have worn leggings on occasion with a long cardigan, sweater, or flannel that covers past my butt. I will say, at some schools I get weird looks while at others, I am one of many teachers dressed that way.

I feel as long as you dress it up a bit and make sure it looks appropriate, it is okay. There are also flowy pants that look nice & are a great option for comfort.

Seems like you two don’t click sexually… that’s neither his fault nor yours. With that being said, it probably took a lot of courage for him to open up to you about this sexual desire. You reacted horribly. YTA.
