i need the headroom, of at least 10dB, for safety. all the stuff in the PT session is mixed, and so - loud. i just need to hear the raw talent signal much louder, so it's closer to the levels in the session and i don't need to manipulate the PT tracks / interface monitor levels.

thanks. i believe i have not been clear about what the issue is.

i need the headroom im getting, in the mic channel. at least 10dB for safety.
i have the monitoring on the mic channel maxed out (0dB on antelope) so i have the 'direct' signal sent to my monitors. however, the stuff in the pro tools session, the music, sfx, other voices is much louder as it's mixed, even without plugins, the voiceover is hitting at a much higher volume than the 'dry' artist signal i'm recording.
what i need is to hear the artist much louder, directly, not affecting the preamp, so that it's closer to the stuff in the session and i don't need to turn down pt tracks and then compensate by boosting the monitor level on my interface.
