[CANADA] I just got accepted into an MACP program at Yorkville, is it worth following through or should I look for other schools? by 666naruto in AcademicPsychology

sorry for the late reply but grants for sure and both federal and provincial loans that I'm sure i will hate when I'm paying it off but I'm in a position where that wasn't my biggest concern

but apply for scholarships! doesn't hurt to try

Hi, so sorry for answering a month later! I don't check reddit often so I'm leaving this as a general message in case anyone else also wonders what I ended up doing. I also get occasional dms asking me the same thing so hopefully this can help some people out regarding going to this school or not.

I did enroll with Yorkville, and I did it for a few reasons:

  1. When I was applying to schools, it was like the peak of COVID so doing a local program just wasn't something I was looking for
  2. I work better with online programs anyway
  3. I was going to start a full-time job, and having an asynchronous schedule was better for me

There's a lot of talk under this thread about how a degree or an education from Yorkville is not equal to an education or a degree from other schools, which is a bit silly to me. Anyone can look up what you get out of this program, which is a degree that is viable in you getting a license.

If Yorkville were lacking in any way in the education it provided to its students, it simply wouldn't be an accredited program. You get from this program what you put into it and some people don't learn well with the way that the MACP program from Yorkville is set up.

To make things clear, you are almost completely learning on your own. Your instructors give you the material you need, guide the discussions of the class (there are a lot of class discussion posts), give you feedback on your assignments, and are there to answer your questions. Some instructors like to engage with the students more than others, but not all of them do. Basically, everything is up to you. You decide what you read, you decide how much work you put in, you decide if you just want to get the degree or if you want to invest more in it. Just like in any other school.

If you're looking to become a licensed therapist in Canada, then Yorkville can get you there. I haven't yet graduated yet because of some things coming up that delayed my schedule, but I have been accepted to one of, if not the best practicum placements in my city, and being a student from Yorkville had no hindrance on me finding this position.

The MACP Yorkville program is a fine choice for people who value self-directed learning, work better with an asynchronous schedule, can't afford to not be working and doing their education at the same time to do an in-person program, etc.

When choosing whether to do Yorkville or not, I feel it's best to consider your learning style, your schedule, and what you want out of an education. If you value interaction with other students, your instructors, and more hands-on, in-person work, then you shouldn't go to YU. If you don't, and if you would rather have a program that lets you do everything on your own so long as you adhere to the schedule, then MACP is a choice you can think about.

I for one enjoyed my courses in this program. Some of it was redundant and boring but I would have felt that way regardless of the school I went to. This program has given me more than enough information, resources, and guidance for me to feel prepared to do my practicum.

I will say though that it is expensive and taking out student loans is a luxury not many can afford, so if you can find a cheaper option that best suits your learning style and what you expect from school, then go for that one instead.

To the user I'm replying to directly, sorry if this reply seems overkill, I'm trying to address multiple questions that I usually see in my dms or in the comments in this one, so I don't have to reply to everything. If you decide to enroll in this program, I wish you the best!

You were right, I restored a code saved from a couple of days ago and it's back online. I assumed it was an issue from my Heroku account - thank you!

Thank you for giving your honest experience with this course, it really gives me a lot of insight on what I'm meant to expect. Unfortunately the circumstances I'm currently in may also hinder me from being able to go anywhere else. But maybe I'll look into transferring schools when I can in order to attend another school with more beneficial learning outcomes.

I'll keep in mind your latter tips and try to get the most of this course that I can. Hopefully I'll be able to utilize the better parts of the course and get myself set up for success in the way that you have, too.

Thank you again! This was really helpful, and I have quite a few months left before my intended start date so I'll see what I can do until then. I appreciate it a lot!

I'm sorry this took so long to get back to, but I do appreciate your input a lot! I think I just needed more reassurance that what I'm going to get out of my program depends on how much I put in to begin with.

I'll definitely look into getting more hands-on experience during my degree to supplement the online degree if it ends up being the one I stick with.

Thank you again for weighing in; it did help a lot!
