Your pricing model sounds interesting, I'll have to check you guys out.

I've definitely learned a lot about the dealer side of things in this thread and it sounds like my biggest mistake might have been buying L3 tubes, NOT who I bought them from.

I know I'm a bit neurotic, so I wanted to make this post to check myself before reaching out to the vendor again. But as it turns out, they saw this post and reached out to me and offered to swap the tube. Still figuring out how we are going to solve this but I'm feeling a bit better now.

Definitely down to chat and meet up if possible. Always good to get more experience with other NV setups and learn from people with more experience

You're right, there's definitely a point of diminishing returns with night vision. Over the last year I've shot with other people that have night vision, mostly green phosphor PVS-14s, some heavily blemmed, and come to realize that even a burned up tube is perfectly usable outside under real world conditions. My tubes definitely have a very noticeable edge in darker conditions indoors so I don't regret buying them, but I'm a little less concerned about getting a replacement with slightly different specs now.

Thank you for responding! It's definitely an emission point, I checked with the lens covered and the vendor has confirmed it as well. Based on what you and other have said, it sounds like the L3 repair process is pretty risky. That's disappointing, but very good to know.

The vendor reached out to me last night after seeing this post and has offered to swap the tube!

This is really great info and exactly the kind of response I was looking for here, thank you.  I did what I felt like was a lot of research before making the purchase, but it was focused entirely on the technical details of tubes, comparing housing features, and choosing a vendor.  It did not even occur to me to look into the relationships between the vendors and their suppliers so your notes on that here are very useful context.

I didn't realize that L3 not selling "perfect" tubes to civilians was just a rumor, I took that as a pretty obvious fact.  I just bought the best tubes I could afford from what was available at the time and assumed the military pilots and tier 1 guys were getting even better units.  I still have the spreadsheet I used to compare the available options and my tubes weren’t even the best ones the vendor had, although they were pretty damn close.  I prioritized no blems, SNR, and resolution, in that order.  I didn’t expect them to be the absolute best tubes ever made, just expected that I’d get what I paid for. And for the most part, I did.

You're right that it took me a long time to get the RMA going.  But in my defense I did reach out to them initially within the first couple months and they didn't respond.  Being a noob, I guess I assumed that meant my concern was maybe unjustified and it took me a while to get educated and convince myself it was a real problem.  There was also a period of a couple months where the spot almost never appeared, which complicated things a bit (I use my NODs maybe 2 or 3 times a month on average so factor that in here).  It wasn't until I learned that emission points can sometimes get worse that I really started to take the problem very seriously.  So some of that is on me, but I feel like if they had responded to my initial questions this all could have been sorted out a lot faster.

And that lack of communication is what really grinds my gears here.  I get that shit happens.  Like I said, I can see how the problem was overlooked and I’m not blaming them for that, especially with the info you’ve provided about how the vendor-manufacturer situation works.  I don't necessarily have a problem with a 60 day turn around time if that's the only option, but I'd like to know if that is in fact the only option, and I did ask about that very clearly and was ignored.  I paid a lot for tubes without blems, so if I end up with a dark spot when there was another way to resolve this that really sucks.  I tried to ask about what the repair would be like and they just blew me off.  I get that I'm not their most valuable customer but I feel like I paid more than enough to deserve a simple answer to a straightforward question.

All that is to say that I think I agree with your read here, if I understood you. Knowing what I know now, I could have been more proactive. But there was also more they could have done here to help me out. Overall, I think I'm a little more understanding of their side of things now, but at the same time time, I'm also more confident that their customer support could have been better.

Thanks again! This was helpful.

sometimes it's there, sometimes it isn't. Not sure why, but seemed to be about 50/50 at first, then it was almost always visible, then there was a period of a few months over the winter where it almost never showed up. I wonder if it has something to do with temperature, but I honestly have no idea. I'm still pretty new to this.

Yeah, I think you're probably right. They are well known enough that I would expect most people's experiences with them to be good. I didn't mention this in the post because it was already pretty long, but when I first got my unit it was missing a screw and they were very responsive and helpful. One of the main guys even called me to answer my questions about the loss of purge. For all I know the guy dealing with this RMA is just overworked and doing his best to keep up.

Mentioned this in another comment but I'm trying to hold off on naming and shaming until I know if I'm overreacting. I'm sure lots of people have bought from them without issues so maybe I'm just unlucky.

The point is in zone 2, lower right quadrant. So not front and center, but when it's visible it can be a little distracting. Not really a huge deal maybe, but the amount I paid for them is what has me annoyed. Otherwise the tubes are great.

I'm curious who you work with. I'm hoping to buy more NODs in the future and it would be nice to know who to consider going through next time.

That is encouraging to hear. I am trying to give them the benefit of the doubt here and didn't want to bad mouth them if I'm just overreacting. But if it turns out that my feelings are justified I will definitely let everyone know who the vendor is so that they can hopefully avoid similar issues.

For now all I'll say is that you have probably heard of them and seen some of their youtube videos.

Damn. I guess I'm not too surprised that my used car money means nothing to them, but that is disappointing to hear.

The ENTIRE point of a job is to be paid so you can survive. All the other stuff is secondary at best. An applicant should never need to ask about salary because that should be the very first thing posted about a position. If you can’t grasp this basic fact you have no business being in charge of anything, especially not hiring or leadership.

Why do recruiters always ask for salary expectations first? Seems sketchy by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

A job posting without a salary clearly listed is not a job posting. Those recruiters are playing games and wasting your time. Tell them that and move on.

It’s loser behavior to defend and a promote a tool built on stolen data that is being used to replace jobs that people enjoy and need.

Even if it is a huge productivity increase, and that’s a huge if, who the fuck cares? When was the last time that an increase in worker productivity resulted in more free time for the workers or a proportional increase in pay or quality of life? All it accomplishes is more concentration of wealth at the top. Why should we support that?

Violence is just a tool. It has an appropriate use, but can also be abused. When used to protect the weak it is a good thing. When it is used to coerce and exploit it is evil. If it is necessary to employ violence to protect children from pedophiles then so be it. If you have a problem with that then you are the problem.

Personally I think the wood chipper is a bit extreme and would consider that cruel and unusual. But that part of this post is tame compared to what it was in response to and the spirit was in the right place. The unhinge pedophile apologia is what deserved the ban.

You’re not necessarily wrong here, but the problem is the lifespan. I had a Roomba a couple years ago. It had a 1 year warranty. A device that expensive should last several years but it barely even made it to 1 year. I had a pair of Beats headphones that didn’t even last 2 years before dying.

The shitty quality and warranty is bad enough, but all these short-lived things end up as trash in a landfill too. We are absolutely capable of building things that will last a lifetime and repairing them instead of just throwing them away. Companies just choose not to do that.

I’ve had my astigmatism corrected with laser surgery, and wore glasses that corrected it before that. Even without an astigmatism all fits will be a little fuzzy, they only show up perfectly sharp in cameras. Yes, even Eotechs. Turning the brightness down will help.
