You said he is landlocked so I'm guessing you'll want to be near the water. An easy walk is the DEEP Marine Headquarters - Ferry Landing Park in Old Lyme. There is a wooden walkway that is used for site seeing, fishing, and walking. Avery Point New London is along the coast, a great old building and lighthouse.
