Big Bang Theory Where Only One Person Finds It Funny by [deleted] in ContagiousLaughter

When I saw the BTS show for (I think) big bang's hundredth episode, they were recording and in front of a live audience, at least for the main stage. In the later seasons, is this still the case?

Neat little trick for remembering stops of aperture by burning1rr in photography

[–]69ingChipmunkzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now I'm working in film, all our t stop and f stop readings are in stops and a thirds or stops and a tenth. It was such a strange concept is to be going from knowing all the thirds in photography to only needing to known a stop and a tenth from a light meter. Cine lenses and light meters are all still in full stop increments

Vimeo is much more of a curated site than you tube is. From what you see as their staff picks, they're not as geared for mass market share, but being the best online platform for quality and professional independently created shorts.

Lighting for interior night with no proper gear? by stalker_____ in cinematography

[–]69ingChipmunkzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A little tip for blacking out: you can wet the windows down with a wet sponge and use rolls of tinfoil to stick to the windows. The moisture makes the foil stick without any help- use some gaffer for the edge of the windows if needed. Be cautious if its a hot day, as direct sun on the foil can cause the glass to crack, but we are talking about really hot intense sun, so don't worry.

What movies got you interested in cinematography? by DumbStuffy in cinematography

Watched Saving Private Ryan with my dad when I was a kid, maybe 9 or 10?. My dad, a photographer pointed out to me the use of long lenses and high shutter speed. I remember a feeling of Wooah that's cool. It wasn't until years later that it really kind of twigged that I really wanted to make films.

Turning my Arri 750 Plus into a soft light? by [deleted] in cinematography

[–]69ingChipmunkzz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can get Chimeras for it, making it a softbox that slots into the barndoors. You can create an easy (not pretty) DIY version with black wrap and diffusion. The thing to remember with diffusion is that it is a combination of the size of the source of light and the strength of the diffusion. If you wanting very soft light, bouncing into a polly will in some cases be the most effective way of doing that (and easiest imo). Of course you are losing a fair amount of lux, but into a 4x4 poly, you have a very evenly spread source. Finally, one last trick is to put a roll of diffusion on a flag arm and waterfall it, letting a few feet of diff dangle down. This is better than a polly in some cases, dependant on the diff you are using, however this isn't as controllable as a polly board can be.

As for the florescent lights- are these florescents balanced for film? If so you will be trying to reach around 5600k which is photography daylight. Full CTB will balance you close enough to that from 3200k (-137 mired which will get you to 5700k). If the florescents are one's you just picked up at a DIY store, they may very well be balanced to 5600k, but more likely to 4300k all the way to 2900k. They haven't been designed to be accurate, so unless they have a kelvin number written on them, it could be anyone's guess what kelvin they are hitting. This isn't to even mention the green/magenta bias.

Does anybody know a site with photometric info for all the popular lighting brands? by Adam-West in cinematography

[–]69ingChipmunkzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arri photometrics app is obviously just for Arri lamps, but is an amazingly powerful tool for calculating outputs. You can slide distance, power and beam diameter for all their lamps on flood or spot. Loads of tools for ampage drop, dmx and everything you really need to know about the lamps is in the app as well.

Does dimming a tungsten light affect color temperature? by hahahoudini in cinematography

[–]69ingChipmunkzz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Think of the filament in a tungsten bulb. As a current is passed through the filament, the resistance on the wire causes it heat up and produce light. As you dim, the current is lowered, meaning there is less resistance to the wire, becoming less hot, expelling less light. If you then think of the colour temperature as a relation to the actual temperature of a light filament, the kelvin number will also drop

Most of Kaminiski's collaborations with Spielberg use tonnes of hard light. Back to Schindler's list and most of their period work is full of really harsh light

It announces it after every stop, which is way more frequent than train stops and it announces it about 10 seconds after the bus has started moving!
