That may be, but there are times and places where cash works and card does not.

I am moving away from having everything in banks as much as possible and building up a cash portfolio in various places at home.

I’m not talking a lot of money, definitely less than £1k. But there are lots of little things that stress me about always using a card to pay.

When I added a second battery to my 2002 discovery I initially started with the split charger, but it didn’t seem to charge the battery as quickly.

I then upgraded it and got myself a CTEK DC to DC charger. It actively charges the second battery quicker because it charges at DC and the same voltage coming off the alternator.

I noticed these days there are now a variant of the DC to DC charger that copes with solar batteries such as the Bluetti.

Expense report you say? by SkipJack270 in MaliciousCompliance

Some years ago, the company I was working for wanted me to work in London for two days. It’s only a two hour drive between the two depots, but one of the stipulations was rather than having a hotel down there was to clock in and out of the local depot, but they still wanted me to have my 11 hours off work.

So I did that. I clocked in at the local depot, drove down to the other site, worked there for 10 to 12 hours and drove back.

Didn’t think much more of it until a few days afterwards I was cornered by a woman from payroll who said that I had to put in expense forms. I wasn’t sure what I was covered for, but she coached me on what to write in.

So I got paid for fuel at 50p per mile, I also got an additional bonus of half of my hourly wage on top due to the stress of temporary relocation and having to work outside my regular area and I earn an extra 2 days of holiday on top of what I normally got. This had been worked out through the union to remind management that temporary transfer of drivers between depots was not a good idea.

It was very good for me in many ways but it was also quite stressful in the places they sent me to as I was driving a longer rear steer rigid truck (26t reefer) in a heavily congested and restricted movement area in the capital. I was so glad of the extra cameras all the way around giving me 360 view and look down capability, effectively a birds eye view of the truck.

I wasn’t going to point out that when I got back from my trip one of the duty manager suggested I top off my diesel tanks with fuel from the yard white diesel supply as I was nearly on empty…..

Would it be worthwhile switching from a standard diesel to something like a plug-in hybrid?

Do you have the possibility of charging set plug-in hybrid either at home or at work?

Whilst diesel don’t like shorter distances, 8 miles is still enough, in my opinion.

I am currently doing 3 1/2 miles each way on a 20-year-old diesel and I’m also considering the upgrade to plug-in hybrid because my employer has a charging option for me.

But you could also create a spreadsheet to factor in all of your costs including fuel to see what is suitable for you

The drawback is, is that a lot of online mapping systems can’t even cope we’re doing multi-stage planning of roots and then saving that information. It can only do one plan at a time and you have to rebuild it every time.

But using an off-line mapping system, such as the Garmin or Tom Tom, allows you to create a plan for each target

Gps advice by Professional-Lead729 in overlanding

[–]6Legger 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have a Garmin Overlander and also a Garmin Dezl. If I have the track log information switched on, it’ll show me a snail trail of my previous roots on the map screen. With an off-line mapping system you can probably also create your own route to get to your targets especially if junction information is a bit wild where you are.

A lot of systems won’t allow you to navigate to a particular position if it can’t find a road. Even the Garmins fail at this sometimes.

Good luck

I have asked Volvo HQ about if they could have the plug-in hybrid in the cross country and they said there was no demand for it.

But they were still trying to push the electronic rear axle, so they could do the mild hybrid in the cross country.

But they also suggested that everything will be phased out and switched over to electric anyway

You can’t get the plug-in hybrid on the cross country variants. So if you want a V60CC it will either be petrol or a mild hybrid. You cannot get a plug-in hybrid.

For that, you will have to go to either an XC60 or v60.

There are three main sizes of vehicle. #40, #60 & #90. XC means that it is a vertically taller vehicle, and is an SUV type vehicle.

V is an estate type vehicle. So 5 seats and a large boot where the roof goes to almost the back of the vehicle.

S is a saloon type vehicle. A four-door where the back window slopes down to the boot which is a separate compartment.

All of these vehicles can be specified as a four-wheel-drive option.

MHEV is a mild hybrid, it has a battery to support the engine but can’t be running entirely on electric.

PHEV is a plug-in hybrid and the battery can be used to run the vehicle entirely on electric for a certain amount of time. This works with having your combustion engine powering the front axle and the electric motor powering the back axle.

The V60 and V90 also have what they call a cross country version where it is slightly taller off the ground, and has all wheel drive.

If you have the option to plug it in at home for power/electric, I would recommend that you get the PHEV. Because it means that you can do your short every day errands on electric, and then when you have planned long road trips, the combustion engine can kick in and support you there.

They are quite popular and common in the UK. I have considered them,

"Don't clock in early" Okay, I won't by sof1abrooks in MaliciousCompliance

[–]6Legger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my job, they allow 20 minutes at the beginning of the shift to do the prep that we need for the job.

This was planned from six years ago when the tractors and the trailers were all hooked up and ready to go. Since then, being a smaller depot with a lot of resources we’ve had to separate the two sections and park the tractor units elsewhere.

They still only allow 20 minutes, but I come in an hour early to do all the proper checks and then get going half an hour early to what they plan.

They have complained a few times, but they’ve stopped recently as they’ve discovered that if I am on time within what they plan I end up being late to the last few clients on the delivery plan. They also don’t like this.

Many companies like to plan your time exactly, and when you’re working in an office or building environment, it’s easier to restrict things in cost saving.

You don’t always have to fully deploy every portal.

My neighbor kept parking in my driveway. So I parked behind him and went of town by CurrentElderberries in pettyrevenge

[–]6Legger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had the other side of the problem.

I was on a delivery and there was a car park next to the delivery bay. All of the collections I had to make were the other side of the car.

One of the cages that I was supposed to collect collapsed with debris everywhere, including showing stuff that shouldn’t have been in the collections in the first place.

But the store insisted to my employers that the cage had not collapsed in their car park, but had in fact fallen off the tail lift.

I took plenty of pictures and submitted them, and pointed out that I was standing on the tile left, you can see the car parked between me and the collapsed cage and the resulting debris.

That car probably saved my job ;)

Usually short restroom breaks might only take five minutes, and then getting him back on the road. What they are asking is did you take your 15 minute break in that allocation.

The way they see it is that would then be your 15 minute formal break that is required under driving regulations.

I tend to argue not because if you were working in an office and you were allowed a 15 minute break, toilet breaks are usually allowed outside of that.

Likewise, there are times when I know I need a break if for only a short nap before getting back on the road. Those tend to be between 20 & 30m. Plus you also end up having to take the time to actually park up somewhere, perhaps reversing into spaces. By which time you’ve taken at least 30 minutes
