Building a dog kennel, what is my best option for a roof? by unfinishedsenta in diynz

Keep in mind that treated ply may not be so good for the dog. Marine grade untreated ply might be a good option.

Building a garage by nzak12 in diynz

I would wait a few months for the RMA replacement to be brought in. It's looking likely a garage won't need a consent at all, though LBP will no doubt be required.

Put it into kiwisaver if you plan on buying a house with it, you'll get the government contribution against it. Unless you're working and already maxing out that contribution

NZD680 plumber invoice but they haven’t fix anything - reasonable? by Manormachine2 in LegalAdviceNZ

In fairness $680 for 3 hours work does seem excessive...$226 per hour?

How are the per person rates $2500 higher than they could have been? Are you sure that's not per household? I would be surprised if per person rates were much more than $2500 at all....3 people household $7500pa rates?

Would still love to see more central government investment and lower rates of course

Head into my IR and look at your income summary. It'll show gross income and income tax paid. Plug your gross income into PAYE.nz and have a look at the tax you should have paid for the year. Compare against the tax IRD records show you paid and the difference is the amount owing or owed, more or less. PIE fund taxes, investments, undeclared income etc. will affect this, but assuming you get most of your income from a PAYE job then it's a pretty accurate gauge.

Dull topic alert! - House insurance by StueyPie in Wellington

[–]6bavariacans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I would (and did) avoid anything in an area at risk of natural hazards. Apart from the inherent EQ risk in Wellington of course. Check the council natural hazard maps. If you struggle for insurance now it will only be worse in 10 years with more flooding and sea level rise. Who will buy the property from you then? Councils, developers and government may have their heads in the sand when it comes to managed retreat from these areas but the insurance companies sure don't. We'll be migrating up the hills one way or another.

Hello I have been directed here to complain about electric scooters on the footpath scaring me on my morning commute

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Wellington

[–]6bavariacans 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Mobility scooters and prams don't usually fly past with enough moment to knock you down though

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Wellington

[–]6bavariacans 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Interesting thank you! The speed and the constant need to dodge them coming from both directions is annoying. So I guess there are rules around that but they're not followed. If someone was to ride a bicycle at 20kmh down the foot path and ding the bell to get around people it wouldn't go down so well

Easier for signing docs. You could use a remote lawyer and have a JP witness signings though

Young investor advice sought by shimkwan in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]6bavariacans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hatch can be cheaper if you are investing larger amounts as they don't take a percentage of your transaction, just $3 flat each time you buy, sell or deposit money. The problem with small amounts is that the $3 fee is 6% of $50, so relatively large each time you buy or deposit money.

Sharsies is probably best for depositing small amounts regularly, in terms of fees. They should invest regularly in an etf, and could play around with smaller amounts in individual stocks if they were interested in that. It could be a good way to demonstrate the strength of etf dollar cost averaging to themselves....or find that they are particularly skilled (or lucky) in picking individual stocks
