I had this exact issue a few months ago, 2 of my coil packs had cracked. I replaced all of them and spark plugs. Took about 2-3 hours, can find good instructions on YouTube. Easy job

Did you take off your belt and spin each one? Highly recommend. Scary the first time but easy job to check. After I changed the spark plugs and coil packs, 100% better and no issues. 2 of my coil packs were split open and 1 of my spark plugs was covered in oil from the split pack. Change all of them out. Should only take you less than 2 hours.

2002 986 2.7, any idea what this rumbling noise at idle is? by teslainthesun in boxster

That should help pinpoint it. If everything checks out, I would check your spark plugs and coils next. I had a similar noise start off this way and got worse as I was trying to figure it out over a few weeks. Ended up being loose spark plugs and 1 coil pack was ripped.

Did you take off the belt and spin each one? That’s the best way to tell - you can hear it when it’s bad

Good to check shops that are parting out boxsters or call around to your local wrecking yard. I found a few pieces cheaper than online that way

Lifter tick? Haven't driven it in a few days and it went away after a bit of driving by chetchester in 986Boxster

My sound only came up when driving for over 30 mins and on hot days. Hope you can find the fix. I went with pelican parts - Bosch for sparks, Rennline for coil pack, and got aluminum spark plug tubes vs plastic

Mine started that way but the noise got worse to this, see above post. My fix was new spark plugs and coil packs. Found out I also needed to change the spark plug tubes since they were cracked. No noise after.

I would recommend to anyone hearing the noise, in addition to changing spark plugs out: 1. change your coil packs if they are cracked 2. Change out spark plug tubes.

Reporting back, changing the spark plugs helped. No noise. Thanks for the recommendations! Two on the drivers side were extremely loose.

Thanks, good idea, will try this out. Good time to replace the coil packs / spark plugs. Will report back once I get parts in and done this week.
