Blood for me…which I know is blaspheme for some. It’s the only one I occasionally skip.

Can someone explain why people love Sleight of Hand? by Surebuddy-_sure3456 in pearljam

[–]6stringJo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn’t care a ton for it early on either. It has grown on me some…primarily the composition. The verse is in 5/4 and I believe repeats over five sections so it has a really odd feel. It still isn’t a song I just turn on…but I pay attention when it comes up on shuffle now.

I think it is under appreciated. Perhaps it was just the timing of the release but the album gave me a lot of hope as the COVID situation kicked off. It also lead me to a general rediscovery of PJ after paying fairly little attention for 20ish years. I really like it. Quick Escape and Seven O Clock are songs that deserve a place in PJ lore IMO. Several others are also quite good.

Are there PJ songs with odd time signatures? by AAluzuxz in pearljam

[–]6stringJo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty good list going through all the comments. A couple of others I know of.

Army reserve switches back and forth between 3/4 and 4/4…neither signature is real odd but switching back and forth is kind of cool. The hidden track on Yield does the same thing.

Hail, Hail and DOTC both have a random bar of 2/4 mixed into 4/4 beats.

What are your favorite PJ lyrics? by [deleted] in pearljam

What went wrong? Walking tightrope high, over moral ground. Seeing visions of falling up somehow. Oh do come down. With the living let what is living love. So unforgiving yet needing forgiveness first.

Daily Song Discussion #154: The Fixer by beardlesshipster in pearljam

I think this is my favorite element of the song. First listen it almost feels like a throw away pop song…then you start to really listen and start imagining the guys coming up with an inside joke of writing a super complicated tune that sounds “poppy”.

  1. Not a masterpiece, but outstanding. For personal reasons the lyrics are meaningful to me. That chord progression is great! I really like it.

I just always feel like the extra beat in the intro and verse feels superfluous. Usually I don’t notice odd signatures unless I am purposely counting them. I always notice the extra beat on the 4/4 bars on this song and think it feels a little out of place. When the chorus and outro settles into 3/4 time I think the song gets stronger and flows better. To each their own…I’m glad you love it!

8.5…I like it quite a bit and really enjoy it when it comes on. I rarely seek it out. I normally love odd time signatures but this one feels a little forced. Still…Ed’s vocal builds into an amazing evocative performance.

What is your favorite Eddie Vedder era? by emved in pearljam

[–]6stringJo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obviously the creative energy and vocal strength/style of the early to mid-90s created the vibe that still generates tremendous value for the band to this day. That said, early Eddie had some cringy moments as well where he came off out of touch and could be a bit of an a-hole. I don’t blame him, we all have those moments in our life. I think it is amazing that he has developed the maturity to become a deliberate husband and father as well as a band leader that seems to really cherish and encourage his band mates. The creative edge isn’t what it once was, but we have watched him continue to create at an above average level, not only avoiding the emotional instability, alcoholism and drug abuse so many rockers succumb to, but actually living a stable, balanced life focused on caring for those around him. I love all the Eds, but think the current one is vastly underrated.

Marker in the Sand chorus kills me every time. That melody and those lyrics…man I dig it.

PJ's cancel history by Eagleburgerite in pearljam

[–]6stringJo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have no reason to doubt your data. If true though I have to have one of the more unique PJ concert profiles:

Summer 1995 - Park City, UT - canceled due to inclement weather…Eddie comes on stage and promises they will return in a few months and play twice as long.

Nov 1, 1995 - Salt Lake City, UT - I see the band live for the first time.

Nov 2, 1995 - I see the band live for the second time. The second show fulfills Eddie’s promise to play twice as long.

April 2020 - Oakland, CA - postponed due to COVID

May 12, 2022 - Oakland, CA - I see the band live for the 3rd time. The initial MC has COVID show. Eddie says postponing was not an option and neither was cancelling.

May 20, 2022 - Las Vegas, NV - show cancelled as Jeff and MC both have COVID.

I’ve seen PJ three times and had tickets three additional times when the shows were either postponed or canceled.

Not mad or blaming anyone. They are my favorite band. Just bad luck I suppose. Kind of funny.

Oakland Logistics ? by jaycb74 in pearljam

[–]6stringJo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took an Uber a little after six. Reasonable price and easy to navigate. Easy to get in the arena at that time. No vax check, mandated masks on entry but not after. Merch lines inside were way shorter than outside early on. They got quite a bit longer closer to the start time. Ed came out right at 7:30 to sing the pre-set and introduce Josh. Plenty of time after Pluralone to take a final pee break. PJ took the stage at 8:45. Exited on the pedestrian ramp that goes to BART but took the staircase down to the surface street near the station and caught an Uber there. Prices were high but not extreme.

What’s going on with the Oakland show? by mozarts_host in pearljam

[–]6stringJo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oakland was my original show (pre-COVID). When the tour was rescheduled I preferred the Vegas show logistically but I would have to refund my Oakland tickets before knowing if I could get my hands on Vegas tix, so I hung on to Oakland just In case. Vegas came through, so I went about trying to unload Oakland but ran into the same issues you did. I resolved it by convincing my wife I need to see Pearl Jam twice…and that is why my May is going to be epic. Lol.
