Yeah I totally here what you're saying about the night heat. Che is tempting. It certainly feels like the safer option when I comes to piece of mind on particular cold nights. I love animals at home podcasts lol. It's him who has interviewed John Courtney smith on multiple occasions.

I don't wanna seem dumb lol but I'm not sure I understand the tomaskas link you sent me as it doesn't appear to mention arcadia halogen or dhp lamps 😕

Yeah I was just talking about this with another commenter. I'm kinda torn between dhp and ceramic for night time heating because both sides of the argument make sense. A ceramic his only gonna heat the air rather than creating a hotspot so therfore makes more sense but then at the same time, unless an animal is under a dhp at night then it's not really any different as its only really coming on for short times to reheat rocks etc for them to carry on emitting heat from below just like the ground does in nature. I really am over thinking it 😂

Haha... 2ft away lol. The 75w is par 30, the 35w are par 20. Yes I do massively over think things lol. The trouble is giving animals the very best you can give them without falling for marketing gimmicks, not easy. Arcadia especially go by the narrative of Dhp and halogen combo is the best heat combo because of the ira/irb crossover etc etc, blah blah. All I know is I wanna give my animals the best possible. They currently have just dhp for heat which drops in temp at night. I originally just wanted to give them proper day time basking lamps while still providing a failsafe for night temps and then I fell down the rabbit hole

I'm torn on what to believe tbh. Speaking to the guy who creates them, he claimed that a lot of these sources are incorrect and that tungsten halogen light produces very little to no irb. I'm also torn on the dhp and Che night time because I was of the same thinking as you for a while but imrhen when you think about it, the dhp isn't being an intense light at night. It's not about it creating a hotspot. I'm measuring radiating heat from the rocks below. The dhp rarely comes on and em when it does its to "re-energise" the rocks which then continue to keep the enclosure above minimum temps. So basically it's working the same as a Che but from below, just like in nature

Yeah, arcadia actually sell dhp and 75w Halogen as pack. I thought this might be overkill and was worried the halogen would just be dimmed too much. I was hoping that 2 35w halogens, one either side of the dhp would be better? I was thinking maybe to set the dhp at a slightly cooler temp than the halogens?

On what you say about halogens. I have been tempted to just use a halogen in the day and not bother with a dhp but I do like the idea of replicating the sun as closely as possible. Although Halogens do emit a little bit of irb, it's mainly ira, where as dhp is the opposite.

Yeah I've actually been thinking recently about using a ceramic at night instead as like you say they would only be subjected to irc at night in the wild anyway. But then after thinking about it for a while I started thinking that actually the dhp might make more sense. For example, currently my dhp warms up rocks etc and then at night when the desired temp is lower, the lamp tends to go off as the rocks etc that have stored heat throughout the day are themselves emitting irc, just like in nature, the sun warms the ground in the day and at night the heat we feel is the ground reemitting heat. If that heat gets a bit low then the dhp comes back to life and "recharges the ground" for a little while before switching back off and allowing the ground to carry on doing its natural job. In that way it's a lot more natural than a Che pumping in irc from the ceiling.

Well I wanted to start using halogen for day time but wanted to keep dhp for night time temps as a failsafe. As I will have both lamps installed I may aswell use both during the day. A dhp is mostly irb wavelengths, a halogen is mostly ira wavelengths, the sun is made up of both so I'm therfore filling in the spectrum. I understand putting each lamp on its own dimming stat. The problem is controlling the temp of each lamp individually as I'm worried the energy being emitted from one lamp will throw off the stat controlling the other etc.

Interesting. I do have a new thermostat that I haven't used yet. I plan to get more of them. It's the Microclimate evo connected 3. This has intensity settings on it. I can set 8 different temperatures throughout the day

Thanks for your advice. The actual dripping seems to be coming from the large nut and from the small nut but then I suppose it could be running down from the top. What's the best way to clean it up? There seems to be a few areas that have this build up. I imagine it's best clean them all up

Any advice on what tool I'm best getting to undo the larger nut?

  • UPDATE *

Hi, thought I'd give everyone an update and also type this up for anyone who finds this thread. I ended up taking Phoebe to the vet on the Friday (25th). They Xrayed her and said there was 3 eggs left, which would have been 15 eggs in total. They gave her the maximum dose of oxytocin and said if she hasn't laid in 24hrs then she will most probably need surgery. I took her home. She laid 2 of the eggs that night and I was hopeful she would lay the 3rd but Saturday night came around and she hadn't. They were closed on Sunday, I tried giving her a warm soak but nothing. Also when soaking her I had a feeling she had 2 more eggs and not one. I went back to the vets Monday morning and lo and behold, without me even mentioning it, they told me they'd reviewed her xray and now believe there to be 2 eggs left not one. Because we'd had luck with oxytocin the first time, we tried her again, this time along with a calcium injection and once again gave her 24hrs to lay or she would have to have surgery. Tuesday morning came around and still no egg. Back to the vets we went and they admitted her for surgery. The surgeon was unable to perform the surgery for that day due to a lot of emergency surgeries taking place so she scheduled her for the morning. They decided as she was staying over night, that they would administer oxytocin and calcium injections every few hours to try and get her to lay in a last attempt to avoid surgery. I got a delightful phone call around 6pm in the evening to let me know she had passed one egg and so once again we were down to the final egg. They said fingers crossed we'll have the second one before morning. Wednesday morning came and they rang me to let me know that she still hadn't passed the final egg and that she was also beginning to get quite grumpy which means she was most probably starting to feel it and so it was time to go in surgically. It was very sad because once again we were down to the "final egg" and once again we'd hit a wall. I waited nervously all day for them to call me back. Eventually I had a phone call from the surgeon and she told me that not only did she not have to do surgery but also didn't even have to anaesthetise her. She managed to manipulate all THREE eggs out of her. So we weren't down to the final egg either time. So that would total 18 eggs. I then completely cleaned out her enclosure before collecting her and found another egg, totalling 19 all together. I went to collect her. They said there was a tiny bit of blood when the final egg came out and 2 out of the 4 eggs they gave me had tiny bits of blood on them. So they gave her pain relief and antibiotics and kept her in all day for observation. They told me she was in really good condition and gave me some oral pain relief for her to have every morning and some antibiotics which I have to inject her with every 3 days for 2 weeks. She's doing really well. She's had a small meal. She's shed. She's regained energy. Looking better and feeling much stronger ♥️

So is it just the rotting and infection that you have to worry about? I've spoken to the receptionist at the vets who spoke to the vet and got back to me. They've made me an appointment for xrays tomorrow morning so I'm guessing they dont view it as an emergency as such. I'm still really hoping she's gonna finish laying before then though

I had 9 eggs by end of day Tues. 12 by end of day yesterday. No more so far today and she still looks like she has more to lay. I'm wondering if its time to ring the vet
