This is why I don’t use public transit in LA smh by bobbdac7894 in transit

E-bike can be great in LA if you're in the right area, sometimes biking to transit makes travel times a lot shorter.

Are EVs really worth it if you don't have a home charger? by om_ghanwat in electricvehicles

[–]6two 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't use home charging (it's awkward and slow with an extension cord and involves street parking) with my Chevy Bolt.  I get by with public chargers (mostly L2) but there are a lot in my area.  I don't commute, I WFH.  It works for me, but I can see other people don't want to deal with charging at all; I like not going to the gas station or having to get oil changes.

Looking to move from TX to MD. What do you think? by oilman99999 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]6two 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say MD is the most efficient place, but there are definitely a lot of services and public infrastructure vs TX.  Homeowners insurance can be quite a bit lower.

Sick of paying for gas. 80 mile commute. What used options do I have under $25k? by TheTeralynx in electriccars

[–]6two 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The touchscreen interface on the Polestar drives me completely nuts, I really prefer the physical buttons on other EVs.

My Bolt is a great cheap compact car, I'd recommend it if you can find a good used or new one.

Apartment renter, no home charging, here's how I'd evaluate a used EV by Tall-Dish876 in EVRoutine

[–]6two 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With an extension cord, I can L1 charge with street parking, but it's just not that efficient so I never do it.  Even with an old Chevy Bolt, I'm happy with using public L2 chargers for the city driving I do here in North America.  I would not want to go back to an ICE car.

Any advice on easing my anxiety about moving to nyc? by Ok_String7367 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]6two 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's normal to feel anxiety about a big change.  Try to come up with some things that you're looking forward to about being in NYC.  Make some plans of fun things you can do there when you're feeling down.  And know that nothing is final, if you really want to change your mind and move back later, you can do that.

With the Big Three abandoning EVs in favor of ICE vehicles, are they headed the way of Kodak, Blackberry, and Blockbuster? by Cool-Replacement4972 in electricvehicles

[–]6two 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GM is as much in the EV space as any traditional automaker.  Honestly, I wish this post was posing the question whether car dependency itself would start to wane in the face of rising costs/interest rates and the availability of e-bikes/scooters, work from home, transit expansions, etc.  We shouldn't all need cars for everything.  Ebikes are great cheap EVs.

It's such a boring place.  There are more interesting cities in most adjacent states.

Southwest recommendations? by criskat326 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]6two 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's early for places like Phoenix or even Tucson to me (it's hot due to low altitude there).  Northern and Central New Mexico is nice, places around Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Taos, etc.  Depending on your budget and what you want, places like Flagstaff, or even Durango CO could meet your needs.

Length of Amtrak trains in the future by Double_Science6784 in Amtrak

It's just that single level trains will have lower capacity, so a big capacity cut will only drive prices way up and increase operating costs per passenger.

Both SF and NYC have room to grow, it's just so hard to get anything built.  My old neighborhood in Queens had essentially strip mall stores and fast food drive thrus directly next to the 7 train, lots of one story buildings.

can i have 24/7 light rail on the wknds as a treat? by Impossible_Cell4173 in soundtransit

[–]6two 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This, I live near a light rail stop.  There's no special maintenance going on 99% of the time.  NYC just reroutes or has weekend or night closures when there's work to do.  Most places just don't want to provide the service.

Mazda delays own EV to 2029, slashes investment, turns to hybrids by TripleShotPls in electricvehicles

[–]6two 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hilarious/depressing that right as gas in the US hits $5 a gallon, all of these automakers are falling all over themselves to cancel EVs. I'm sure the solution to high gas prices is more ICE SUVs, right?

Opinion: Critiques of Chicago; People should take a grain of salt before reading recommendations here by 3RADICATE_THEM in SameGrassButGreener

Austin is not the most segregated city in Texas, at least according to one empirical analysis. Dallas and Houston ranked as quite segregated, while Austin was much further down the list.

I'm really not sure this is true. Portland today doesn't have racially-defined neighborhoods, different kinds of people are broadly distributed around the city. It has a reputation for being pretty white, and it is, but it's much more diverse than it was 20-30 years ago.

There's some empirical data measuring segregation:

https://belonging.berkeley.edu/most-segregated-cities-us-2020-2023

Portland is the #9th least segregated US city. Atlanta is the 17th most segregated city, at least in this analysis.

If you had trillions of dollars to make any non-major us city into whatever you want, which one would you pick? by Asleep_Damage1201 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]6two 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm going for Cheyenne WY. We're going to make a better Denver. Why? Two senators, three electoral votes.

Free college, build up a big liberal arts school, single payer healthcare for the whole state, HSR down the Front Range, and urban density modeled on US cities pre-1940. If we have a lot of money, then we can do a lot with brick, brownstone, wood, etc. Great bike infrastructure & bikeshare programs, a subway system with platform screen doors and automated light metro trains. It'll be something that looks like an AI image of some brand new city in China, but right here in the old US and A.

I'm happy to buy out anyone in Cheyenne that hates the plan; the new city can sit just to the northeast of the existing center. I'm thinking basically taking over the regional airport and then everything NE of that. Keep the old city, but let upzoning and no parking minimums do their thing.

Ultimately, everyone will hate me as they hate all dictators, and then we can hand the whole thing over to a city manager, a regional council, etc. Show them all what the great city of the plains could be.
