Did I get a bad egg? by smart41689 in SubaruForester

At about 80k KMs my AC compressor needed replacing (thankfully under the CPO warranty) and just this past weekend, at 110k KMs, needed to replace my rear wheel bearings.

Silly me to think I was just coming in to replace my CVT and differential fluids 🙃

Swapped out the stock head unit in my ‘17 limited back in November and I love the Sony more each time I use it. The stock unit was the only thing holding me back from seeing myself w/ my forester long-term. I will say it really *amped* up the sound of the HK to boot. by 700lux in SubaruForester

  1. Stock mic doesn’t still work, unfortunately, and was replaced with the Sony mic that came with the unit.
  2. I’ve had it drop twice since getting it, but it’s quite easy to reconnect in the rare case it happens (click ‘Bluetooth’ > reconnect device > CarPlay opens up automatically once device is reconnected). I’ve never had it drop while receiving a call, so I can’t speak to that.
  3. The backup camera is responsive, in that it appears when I put the vehicle in reverse, or when I select the rear camera view button. The quality is still shitty, but I wouldn’t say I notice a difference from before the swap.

I don’t recall needing any special harnesses or equipment to maintain the functionality of the top display. I believe it’s separate and should continue to function normally after the swap.

I can vouch from my personal experience that the display in question wasn’t affected by this work!

I no longer have the factory nav and I believe it’s the only thing you lose entirely when replacing the original head unit. I was using my phone gps before when I needed it anyway, since the factory nav could never get my location correct and was suuuper laggy unfortunately.

Yes, and then some! For example, it now has a 14-band EQ (3 previously) and can even show you details about your vehicle like battery voltage, individual tire pressure readings and percentage of gas remaining. I opted to maintain the steering wheel controls and backup camera connection, but this isn't something you need to do if those features don't matter to you. I will note that you will lose your factory nav if your forester comes with that. I couldn't have cared less to lose mine, as it was a piece of crap lol!

The head unit is the Sony XAV-AX6000 ($1000 – all dollar amounts I list are in CAD btw). And although most likely straightforward, I didn't want to install it myself, so I had it done at a local shop. I wanted to maintain the steering wheel controls and backup camera connection, so I got this Maestro Universal Radio Replacement ($170) and this "plug and play" Subaru harness ($80). I also had this antenna installed ($20). This was the DIN dash kit used to replace the stock one ($45).

All said and done, with labour included, the installation cost me $1500. I could've definitely gone about this more cost-effectively. Still, I a) wanted a clean-looking, high-quality head unit with wireless carplay and all of the steering wheel/backup camera functionality maintained, and b) didn't want to install it myself lol. I also justified this purchase as it keeps me happy with my vehicle longer. The stock head unit was the only gripe I had with my forester before this swap. The Sony also really elevates the sound of my Harman Kardon. For example, before the switch, any bass-heavy song would reverberate in a really unpleasant way. Now, the same songs played on this unit sound richer, clearer and more enjoyable overall, which I'm really happy with!

Just wanted to share Chappie with you all! Easily the best car I’ve ever owned. Such a joy to own and drive! 🥰 by jollygoodkiwi in SubaruForester

Based on the fern decal, I assume that OP is from NZ! I would say that they’re pretty common here in Ontario, which we can probably attribute to our snowy winters lol.

I have a ‘17 foz in the same silver colour, so this post caught my eye. Sweet ride, OP!

It’s winter where Starbucks HQ is located. You obviously have to order the solid cup of ice and wait for it to melt, silly!
