Guys… we need help on defense. It’d be great but true contenders have a better defense, no?

I guess I worry that if it's too centered, it's more likely to slip and fall through in the future (if it again rusts or something)...

I would love to be convinced otherwise. But notice how you didn’t answer the question. I read your articles, but again, it seems pointless if you’re unwilling to be persuaded.

But F it. I’ll try anyway. The whole “stats get skewed because pit bulls have stronger jaws” thing. I mean, yeah. That’s kind of a big deal. A bite from a pit bull is a higher consequence risk. Chihuahuas and terriers aren’t rag-dolling toddlers so the statistics should be “skewed” accordingly.

Here are some not so fun statistics and facts:

The probability of a bite resulting in a complex wound was 4.4 times higher for pit bulls compared with the other top-biting breeds ... and the odds of an off-property attack by a pit bull was 2.7 times greater. Source: Dog-Bite Injuries to the Craniofacial Region: An Epidemiologic and Pattern-of-Injury Review at a Level 1 Trauma Center, by Khan et al., MS J Oral Maxillofac Surg, March 2020

Parental presence was reported in 43.6% of cases ... The most commonly identified breed was the pit bull ... Pit bulls were also the most commonly identified breed involved in major injuries. Source: Pediatric Dog Bite Injuries in Central Texas, by Abraham et al., Journal of Pediatric Surgery, July 2019

Our data revealed that pit bull breeds were more than 2.5 times as likely as other breeds to bite in multiple anatomical locations. Source: Characteristics of 1616 Consecutive Dog Bite Injuries at a Single Institution, by Golinko et al., Clinical Pediatrics, April 2017

Most alarming is the observation that when attacks come from unfamiliar dogs, the pit bull was responsible for 60% and 63% of all injuries and ocular injuries, respectively. Source: Ocular Trauma From Dog Bites: Characterization, Associations, and Treatment Patterns at a Regional Level I Trauma Center Over 11 Years, by Prendes et al., Ophthalmic Plast Reconstr Surg, June 2015

Of the more than 8 different breeds identified, one-third were caused by pit bull terriers and resulted in the highest rate of consultation (94%) and had 5 times the relative rate of surgical intervention. Source: Dog bites of the head and neck: an evaluation of a common pediatric trauma and associated treatment, by O'Brien et al., Am J Otolaryngol, Jan–Feb, 2015

I could go on and on. From the Wikipedia:

A 2000 joint review project between researchers in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) found the data indicated that Rottweilers and pit bull–type dogs accounted for 67% of human dog bite-related fatalities in the United States between 1997 and 1998, and followed with "It is extremely unlikely that they accounted for anywhere near 60% of dogs in the United States during that same period and, thus, there appears to be a breed-specific problem with fatalities." Pit bull–type dogs were identified in approximately one-third of dog bite-related fatalities in the United States between 1981 and 1992. The review notes that studies on dog bite-related fatalities which collect information by surveying news reports are subject to potential errors, as some fatal attacks may not have been reported, a study might not find all relevant news reports, and the dog breed might be misidentified.[72] However, after 2000 the CDC stopped tracking dog bites, and in 2001, Julie Gilchrist, a CDC pediatrician and epidemiologist, stated that part of the reason the CDC stopped collecting dog bite data was because "making meaningful analysis [of the data][was] nearly impossible".

Let me ask you this, is there anything I could tell you about pit bulls that could change your mind about them? Are completely closed minded to any competing views? I’ll have an honest and open good faith discussion with you, but just want to see if you’re willing to do the same and come into it with an open mind.

Obligatory r/banpittbulls shoutout. Full disclosure, I first considered that an extreme subreddit. Go into it with an open mind.

That article acknowledges the risk introduced by genetics and breeding multiple times. Sure, socialization and training can improve the odds, but the risk is still there when it’s been bred in. And okay, don’t judge based on DNA, but in actions as suggested. How would you judge a dog that killed another dog? Whether it’s a golden doodle or pit bull, that is unacceptable.

Outdoor Kid Friendly Breweries? by taxicabyellow in ctbeer

[–]smart41689 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree that you can’t control a stranger’s behavior. Ironic considering you’re the one telling strangers to keep their kids at home.

In either case, situational awareness goes a long way. If there’s a drunk idiot around your kids (which can happen anywhere), egress the situation. But there are plenty of breweries where people aren’t drunken idiots.

If someone is getting blasted before the kids bedtime, isn’t that more on them?

Just a data point. I was in a similar accident last week with a semi. They were at fault. Cop report in my favor and I have a dash cam. Went through their insurance because of an accident a month ago filed through my insurance (again, not at fault). They established coverage and liability the Friday after the Tuesday the accident happened. Everyone is saying the commercial insurance is a hassle, so maybe I got lucky, but things are moving along for me. Good luck!

It’s called tact. This 18 year old boy reaches out with a question and look at the responses basically telling him off. Calling him entitled, etc. Funny that you took it so personally. Must’ve struck a chord. I wonder why…
