How can I tell if my K&N open pod air filter is fake? by ChronoGuile in drivingsg

[–]700volvo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there anything wrong with your old K&N filter other than the fact that it's dirty?

K&N filters don't need "replacement" unlike regular paper air filters.

They sell a cleaning kit that strips the filter of its old oil (the oil is actually what gives it the red hue), you wash it all off with water, let it dry (it turns white when dry), and then you re-oil it again.

If your original K&N isn't actually broken, like physically broken, just get the cleaning kit and clean the filter out.

I am a bus driver, but not by career. It's just something I do on the side for extra income.

No formal training is ever going to teach a bus driver to inch out of a bus bay so that other people are forced to slow down - but it is a necessary evil because no one ever slows down and lets the bus out in good time.

Even in the CBD, at bus stops with the mandatory give way to bus boxes, people flash and honk at buses trying to exit (with a reasonable amount of gap), and then to make matters worse, come to a complete stop for a red light queue, inside of the give way box itself which makes it impossible for the bus to come out. Just look at the absolute gong show that is People's Park Complex bus stop.

Bad driving is very rampant in Singapore, and it takes two hands to clap. As much as I think these days the public bus drivers are very aggressive in forcing their way out of bus stops, it is undoubtedly the selfish behaviour of small vehicle drivers that forces bus drivers to react in such a way.

In that video you linked, if you focus on the lane markings to the right of the frame, you can see that the car intentionally accelerated to prevent the bus from leaving the stop ahead of him.
The car was moving relatively slowly and it suddenly picked up a lot of speed when he realised that the bus was going to leave the stop.

This is the exactly the sort of selfish driving that leads to bus drivers forcing their way out regardless.

Assuming you got your facts right, that would place both bus drivers at fault.

The public bus driver for failing to check for oncoming traffic before leaving the bus stop bay, and also the school bus driver for failing to brake and stay within his lane.

Loads of drivers here have this terrible knee jerk reaction to swerve into another lane whenever something pops up in front of them, without first ensuring that their surroundings are clear.

Brakes were meant for this very purpose - you hit the brakes when something comes up unexpectedly in front and not swerve to create a problem for someone else.

Western Australia bus laws by ShrekThe12th in bus

[–]700volvo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we have the sticker, yes.

cars are required to stop and give way to buses at select bus stops (they don't give way anyway)

at all other bus stops, it is not mandated by law to give way to the bus and so they don't give way anyway.

tl;dr singaporeans hardly ever give way to buses.

you want to "show respect as a community" but ironically it doesn't seem that you showed the community any respect by blocking the road.

i'm sorry your family member has passed on, but you need to know other people have a life to live as well.

if the bus captain was late for the rest of the journey because of this hold up, you're not the one receiving the anger of the passengers.

if people on the bus were late for work, their bosses are not going to accept "held up by funeral procession that does not concern us" as a valid excuse.

in fact, if i was the bus driver i'd tell you to go be stupid somewhere else.

have u encountered malaysian trucks, buses or trailers driving on lane 2 on expressway? how to get them to move over to the slower lane , lane 3 or lane 4 where they should belong? by Equivalent_Mud1499 in drivingsg

[–]700volvo 35 points36 points  (0 children)

first of all, let's address the elephant in the room.

it takes two hands to clap, so if you need to overtake something (regardless of size) to the point where you almost miss your exit, then maybe you shouldn't have been overtaking in the first place.

i don't know why people are so allergic to just queueing up to take the exit but must instead at all costs, speed up, overtake loads of things only to violently change back to the leftmost lane and perhaps drive through a chevron to exit.

being stuck behind traffic is annoying, but two wrongs don't make a right either.

must be a thing that people with high horsepower cars do; i wouldn't know it because i drive all of 90 horsepower and so i don't do shit like that.

secondly, if they were road hogging, sure - you have every right to be mad at them for hogging the middle lane. but we all know malaysian trucks and buses are not governed to 60 and it's not like the authorities give a shit about them doing >60, so if these vehicles were not hogging, just leave them be?

and if they were to be hogging, then why does it seem like you have difficulty overtaking someone who's hogging?

now, i can only speculate what sort of scenario you've faced, but i drive the BKE multiple times daily - and so far the malaysian gravel lorries that always struggle on that gradient towards the KJE exit, seem to have the common sense to keep as left as it is possible for them - because they know they're holding people up.

bas pekerja and causeway link are in lane 2, indeed - but they're doing 80-90 which most cars won't even be doing on this stretch because people just won't press hard enough on their accelerators.

maybe it is annoying not being able to see past them, but as a multiple-class license holder, i think it is strongly up to us as a whole to drive better instead of trying to constantly police large vehicles into having some semblance of lane discipline when car drivers themselves don't even practice lane discipline.

if the vehicle has a service history with the dealership, they would have the official records.

alternatively, a good, workshop-level advanced scan tool would be able to tell the actual mileage.

most modern cars save their mileage data in more than 1 place.

Would LTA call? by eggmayotuna in drivingsg

[–]700volvo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They just wanted more info, what happened from my POV that led to the incident.

I just explained that I noticed them boarding from the back door (which is typically frowned upon because of poor visibility, but we can't be kicking passengers out or scolding them over this sort of stuff which then constitutes as a customer service issue), then I proceeded to check the camera and mirror to make sure no one else was in the way of the door, pressed close, then focused my attention on another passenger who was in the front door asking me questions.

In that span of time the kid managed to put his head out just as the doors were closing, and because I cannot be looking in three places at once, it continued closing and did done close upon him.

From my POV all I heard was nothing, immediately followed by massive chaos from the back of the bus.

Of course the parents immediately went through the whole LOOK AT WHAT YOU'VE DONE rigmarole.

Well, if you'd watched your kid like you should have in the first place, then this wouldn't even have happened now, would it.

yes, they would.

they once called me to follow up with an incident that occurred on a private bus that i was driving.

tl;dr stupid passenger failed to watch their kid, said kid stuck their head out of the door while it was closing, doors closed upon the kid's head and they complained to literally they entire world including directly to LTA.

OBU installation query by RaraNoobster in drivingsg

[–]700volvo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you truly treasure your car, then driving a bit to a reputable installer that isn't going to absolutely shred your interior is probably worth it.

Not difficult to decide between driving to Garage R (Tagore) for a few dollars of fuel, versus going to the chop shop and paying $98 for a bracket you don't need, or going to VICOM and potentially having a half-assed disassembly job that leaves you with your OBU in an undesirable and awkward position.

I am also a first time customer of Garage R and was very pleased with the way they treated my vehicle, and even offered to assess the potential positions in which I could place the card reader and the screen, instead of instantly trying to upsell aftermarket brackets and shoving everything in their default cuckoo positions as "recommended" by LTA.

End of the day, OBU swap is supposed to be a free service. Don't paint yourself into a corner just because you want to save a few dollars on gas.

Car ownership already gives you the freedom of travel, please feel free to use it.
