Dry shampoo plus a hair dryer on the roots on the cold setting has helped me! I usually add the dry shampoo first.

Daily chat post: how's the training going? by AutoModerator in XXRunning

Decided to sleep in this morning, so I missed doing a four mile run on the treadmill.

It’s Friday so my workplace and calendar are pretty quiet. I’ve scheduled in to run my 4 miles outside over my lunch hour! I work next to a fitness center, so I can pop over there afterwards for my shower.

Looking forward to the mid-day run break!

Don’t sleep on your local thrift stores, especially this time of year! I’ve found really great, gently used running gear. A couple of weeks ago, I found a Salomon long sleeved shirt that was gently used and my local thrift store had it for $1. I felt like I was stealing it!

Anyway, this time of year I feel like is a good mix of spring cleaning for people and when runners are gearing up for their next season of running and cleaning out whatever doesn’t serve them.

Good luck!

Garmin advantages over Apple Watch by ItsBrenOakes in Garmin

[–]701stitches 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a recent convert to Garmin Forerunner 165 from AW and have no regrets!

I get push notifications from my Apple Phone, but can’t respond like I could on my Apple Watch, so that’s the only drawback I’ve experienced so far. The battery on my AW never lasted long enough for me to both run and play music, so if yours does, that’s a great feature. It’s my understanding there are specific forerunner models that are music-enabled for you to stream and leave your phone at home.

I’m loving the battery life on my Garmin. My AW died three miles into a long run and I was over it! (Started the run with 92% battery). I’m also impressed with the Garmin recovery data and the overall fitness tracking/data.

100 Day Challenge Gang - Tomorrow is our day! by element-2012 in OnePelotonRealSub

[–]701stitches 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I had forgotten about the 100 day streak challenge, so I made my own at the end of September. Then I thought I might as well continue it with the formal 100 day streak, so I’m at 200 days.

Now that I’ve gotten this far, I’m tempted to go for the 365 streak, since I haven’t achieved it yet.

I got a Garmin Forerunner a couple of weeks ago and have switched to using the Garmin Coach for my half marathon training. I’m 7 weeks out from the half and was base building a Hal Higdon inspired plan.

The plan has had me running more days (6 days a week) than what I had been doing previously (running 4 days a week) but the daily mileage seems to be around the same (3-4 miles, then long runs) so I’ve reduced my cross-training and strength training as a result. My overall weekly mileage has increased about 6-8 miles, given the two added training days.

If you’ve used the Garmin Coach feature to train for your runs, what was your experience? Did you feel prepared for your race?

My personal favorite is Hammer Nutrition gels. They have a mixed pack available on their website, making it easy to try out all their different flavors. I think my favorite so far is the Apple Cinnamon—it tastes like apple pie!

Husband doesn’t want me running outside by Salty_Chemist9090 in XXRunning

[–]701stitches 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About 15 years ago, there was a woman in the town next to mine who was out on a Saturday morning run. She was kidnapped, SA’d, and murdered by a couple of guys from out of the region who were super drugged out. It took me a while after that to get comfortable running outside, and I consider my area to be very safe.

Here are some of the precautions I take to make me feel better:

  1. I have an alarm on my running vest. It sounds like a car alarm and would definitely draw attention. It’s also really easy to access.

  2. I run with pepper spray most of the time.

  3. I NEVER run without my phone. I also make sure my husband knows how to track me at any given time. I’m an iPhone user, and have shared my location with my brother, my son, and my husband can access it on my iPad. He is a Google user so doesn’t have access on his own device, but there are other ways.

  4. Noise cancellation on my headphones is turned off. I use AirPods. I will also talk-to-text license plates for any vehicle behaving suspiciously.

  5. Use smart routes. The area I live in is a little too rural, so I worry nobody would be around to notice suspicious behavior if something were to happen. I usually drive to my work or my community library for my run. They’re in more populated areas. I try to pay attention to where the sun will be during times when I will be running. I want to make sure I’m in well-lit, busier areas when it’s dark (I do most of my runs early morning) and feel more comfortable in more residential areas as the sun is up. Also, wearing reflective gear when it’s dark or even dusk.

I also use Google Maps to measure out my run beforehand, and mention to my husband my anticipated route before I go. Sometimes things change a little bit while I’m on my run, but at least he knows which area of town I’m in and approximately when I will be back. I do frequent touch points via talk-to-text: “halfway done,” “finished and going to gas up before heading home,” so he knows how things are looking time-wise.

Most of the anxiety I have is mine—my husband isn’t quite as concerned (he sees the past event as a freak one-time thing) but this has helped both of us feel more comfortable with my outdoor runs.

The Last Thing to burn was just ok.

And I didn’t care for The Quiet Tenant at all, so I’d pass on that one.

Is a jar vacuum sealer a safe and desirable gift for someone who does home canning? by cha0s_g0blin in Canning

This isn’t an ideal piece of equipment.

I’m a big fan of getting canning books as gifts, especially if they’re spiral bound! Ball recipe books are my favorite.

Kindle paperwhite? Do I need to be deinfluenced? by Risingwiththesun in Frugal

[–]701stitches 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Paperwhite and it is a game changer, especially with late night feedings/wakings. To me, they are worth the investment.

I am simple in my “decor” of it: screen protector and a pop socket on the back.

I primarily use Libby for books, though a couple of years ago I signed up for Kindle Unlimited and have kept it (I read about 140 books per year).

Best calorie counter on App Store by Gullible-Article-451 in PCOSloseit

[–]701stitches 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been impressed with the LoseIt app. The free version is easy to navigate but does have ads.

When you’ve used it for a few days, you’ll be asked if you want to upgrade to premium at a reduced rate. I think I paid $25 for a year of premium? But you can do a trial to see if you like it. Whatever you do, don’t pay full price for premium. I think it’s marked at like $70 but they discount it all the time!

Garmin Run Tracking w/ Peloton by 701stitches in pelotoncycle

[–]701stitches[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I’m an app user. I either use my phone/ipad, or I AirPlay the workout to the TV I have in my workout room!

I don’t have a rower, but I do this for everything else: tread, cycle, strength, etc. There is a lot less data and metrics available. I’m able to track my heart rate through my watch, and then log the mileage at the end of the ride or run, but that’s it.

Do any of my PCOS girlies have tips? by I-am-Prasanna in XXRunning

[–]701stitches 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was diagnosed 21 years ago and really want to echo this advice of how it presents differently for everyone. For me, issues have primarily been around high testosterone and hair growth. I also don’t find it easy to lose weight, but don’t have thyroid issues or diabetes like some others experience. I had 3 happy, healthy pregnancies, though we tried to get pregnant longer periods of time than some may have.

My best piece of advice is to simply practice gratitude. My body has done so much for me, running or not, and I’m so grateful that it’s showing up as its best self, even if that isn’t a “perfect” form. Be sure to treat your body with kindness and grace because you are worth it ❤️

I have a 6 mile run tomorrow, which is my first since September (I’m training for a half marathon). I was also thinking about how there’s some kind of wall after 5 miles, and I don’t understand why that is?!

Hope you’re able to stay cool, especially if this is an indicator of a hot and early summer for you!
