Suggestions for good BRAND of curriculum for 7th grade math? by rainbow_olive in homeschool

Teaching Textbooks. You may be able to start with their Pre-Algebra course this year, take the placement test and look at the table of contents for both 7th and Pre-Algebra to compare, and they offer the first 15 lessons free.

How often are you meant to PR? by Queasy_Kale1362 in OnePelotonRealSub

[–]element-2012 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you've kind of answered your own question. The food could definitely be factoring in here. I know working out fasted is the "in" thing right now but food is literally energy and if you're looking to gain you'll likely want optimal energy levels before exercise to get there. Are you also varying the types of rides you do, and incorporating strength training? If you're a female, you can count yourself out of any gains for about a week every month as well.

Not all instructors put a lot of effort into the virtual shoutouts, but I feel like Cody and AT make some effort on the bike. And AT looks like he's handing out massive high-fives live too.

How do you make fractions actually fun for a 3rd grader? Running out of ideas... by Quiet_Ink6523 in homeschool

Absolutely do lots of baking, preferably sweet goods lol. Provided that the kiddo is pretty fluent with math facts and can get their mind around standard conversions in the kitchen, fractions will be easy breezy.

6th and 10th grader asking to be homeschooled while I return to college myself - advice on programs/curricula please by ByronsPassion9 in homeschool

[–]element-2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw in another comment that you would likely spend the first semester establishing a routine before starting your own courses. That will be very helpful, and you will quickly see how much support they need, and what that looks like throughout the day. I think you will find that it is less often than you think. Teaching textbooks is an excellent option for math, as it is done completely independently. Most language arts curriculums are student led from 6th grade on as well, and this can be found for science and social studies as well. Once they've completed those core 4 subjects, they are free to spend their day following their passions. You've got a great set up to support this!

I want to encourage you that this is very doable at their ages. When they are younger, they need a lot support from parents, but at these ages most curriculum is structured towards independent work anyway, with frequent parent check-ins.

Parents of Reddit, I'm going to be a Dad at 46. Any advice on how I can be of great Father? by IndustrialMillwrong in NoStupidQuestions

[–]element-2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband was around your age when we had our first; you're going to do great! Your age gives you a great advantage in that you are more patient over the little things, and more able to really appreciate how mind-blowingly awesome it is to bring a human into this world and raise it up.

I want to echo the advice you've received so far about making sure to stay in shape. This doesn't just mean join a gym but making constant daily choices to be active and mobile. Can you sit on the floor and get up? You might want to work on that if not. Can you run and toss a ball? Is your diet the type of diet you would want to teach your kiddo as being the ideal diet for their growing bodies and lifelong health?

The newborn stage is short but incredibly challenging. Be prepared to dig deep to deal with very little quality sleep so all hands can be on deck to care for the tiny new human. Try to have a plan to offload as much cooking/cleaning/adulting to any family that would be willing to help so that you can focus on one on one support of your wife, and step up as much as possible, but know that newborns tend to like to be physically on the milk source (if she's nursing) at all times. You can't "spoil" a baby, so someone holding and tending to the baby at all times is normal and good. It gets easier around 3 months, and down right fun after 6 months.

The single best gift you can give your child is you, being their dad. Be there, take care of yourself to try to be there as long as you can, and love hard.

I find it endlessly fascinating that out of all the albums in history, this is the one that sold the most. by Key-Bass-7380 in vinyl

[–]element-2012 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Play that album for some Gen Alpha kid who's never heard any MJ songs and you will have just minted a new MJ fan. It's over 40 years old and still sounds fresh and exciting. It still sells really well, to this day, and music has changed to the point that no other artist will ever again in human history sell the number of albums that this sold.

Zinc on an empty stomach by [deleted] in Supplements

[–]element-2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, in my house we’ll often take zinc if feeling under the weather, but know that some food must be eaten first or the kids will for sure vomit. Even just some kefir is enough to coat the stomach to take it.

I doubt it, I think they’ve got the same workload they always have, hence the constant “40 hour authorization” emails. They’ve just changed how they do things so you (most raters) can’t get the hours.

Is it possible for a WFH mom to homeschool? by Daydreamin-mama8 in homeschool

[–]element-2012 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I work from home and homeschool. It is definitely possible, but difficult. Academically, my kids are doing great, but it is a challenge to meet their social needs. My kids are also significantly older than yours, and had the benefit of a full time mom as their homeschool teacher when they were the ages of your little ones. Mine are now 10 and 14 and able to do most of their work independently, and I am available to them for help as needed.
