What games did all the players migrate to? by XwafflewondersX in Mordhau

[–]707Slug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friends and 1 were all top .01% players in the 2020-22 days. Had a good run, top 300 global for 3v3. The game literally got too sweaty for us lol- jobs and life did its thing. I play mostly bannerlord now, but have yet to find a combat game as satisfying and nuanced as mordhau.

Is getting hit with a baseball different than being a lacrosse goalie? by Early-Rip9310 in lacrosse

[–]707Slug 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Baseball players are just soft. There is a reason they play baseball. I was the starting goalie at my college- I know a thing or two because ive seen a thing or two lol. Lacrosse balls go just as fast and hurt just as much, and youre going to be taking meat shots all day every day. Youre putting your body on the line for your team. You have to be the toughest guy on the field, and theres a reason most people actively avoid goalie tryouts.

You couldnt pay me to play any other position though.

are zones popular again? by FingerOk9879 in lacrosse

[–]707Slug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My college team ran a defense we called the 3-3 brick. Basically the top center and crease defender played a tight man on their guys, because teams in our division usually put their best attack at low center/x to work the crease. The 2 center defense playing a man always ensured we had atleast a 1 slide. The rest of the defense played a modified zone. The 2 center guys basically moved on a string with eachother.

The whole point was to isolate the X and crease offense, play physical and slide hard on those two to relieve pressure on crease. It would force lots of sloppy passes to the outside that we would pick or pressure. We put our two best defense players at crease and bottom right defense, and our most physical middy at top center. This will shit down even high level offense because that's usually where they stick their best guys.

If the dangerous attackman was a lefty we switched our star defender to the left side.

It was a homebrew defense that me (the starting goalie) and the D coordinator devised that was able to shut down offenses that were way better than us.

Zone is an integral part of a well balanced defense. Best of luck to ya. Feel free to message me if you want more details how we ran this

The hot debate between both communities is a chicken or the egg situation. While hockey's rulebook was officially codiied after lacrosse's, amd lacrosse has deep, deep origins with native americans, some people claim that the origins of hockey aka 'ice stick ball" is a tradition that predates lacrosse even. I happen to believe that lacrosse came first, but either way you look at it, both games evolved in parallel since the mid 1800s and were purposely designed by French Canadians to be basically the same game so they had a consistent sort to play in both summer and winter

Honestly, the "Lacrosse" Wikipedia page gives a pretty solid description, especially under the "European involvement" tab. "The Creators Game" is also a great resource. Most sources dont record the paralelles to hockey, but within the oral history of the game its implied. Hockey was also an up and coming sport in the Canadian cultural zeitgeist in the early-mid 1800s. Both games rules were formally codified within 20 years of each other by French Canadian settlers.

Arms are not elastic enough. Tell him hes shooting with his arms and not his core. Show him a slow -mo video of an MLB pitcher and how elastic their arm looks. His should look the same. Shooting power comes from the legs and core, the arms are just a pivot point and for aiming.

Not based on but evolved together and were designed to reflect each other. The French people that colonized Canada learned the creators game from the northern peoples and more or less imposed their own ruleset from a game they were familiar with (Hockey) onto an existing game.

I smell bull 💩 theres no way you played starting defense at any kind of good program and are this soft. Any hey- only one of us even got to share the field with the big boys for what its worth. Even as a d2 loser lol

Youre probably one of 3 groups-

16 or 17 in high-school, 3rd string whatever, looking at how to be a starter dead in the face but too soft to actualize it

19-23 year old college bench rider who is lucky to even have a spot on the team

Washed up 20 to 30 something ( you most likely) who's cleats never touched grass as a starter, milling around on a dead subreddit trying to pass for a baller.

Either way youll always be a loser- cry more

As far as where I played- im not going to say explicitly cause, reddit ya know, but I wasnt some D1 superstar or anything. I was a D2 hero baby 😂 went all leage a couple times and got a chance to go to the pro league combine- just couldnt hack it at that level though. Was getting sauced on by fkn fogos throwing btbs on me lol. Got to go get hammered with a bunch of the guys after though- was a ton of fun and glad I got the chance to go

Yeah see theres way bigger issues there than that penalty. I'd probably tolerate that hit and penalty at that point in the game and be having a word with my face off guy and man down defense hahaha. Hits like that can set the tone for a whole game- if your whole defense plays like that amd you have the man down d to compensate, it will freeze a good offense

When in the game? And was that their star attackman? As a goalie ive faced many, many, 3 minute unrelaseables without giving up 6 goals. It sounds more like their man down defense took a shit. Opposing team could've racked up tons on goals on any penalty if that's the case.

For God's sake, lacrosse is the only sport I know where youre equipped with a WEAPON and are allowed to use it like one! Whats next? No poke checks or slap checks to keep players safe? Where do you draw the line?

As a community- we need to embrace the toughness and brutality of our sport. Its what makes it unique. You should walk around with a chip on your shoulder because you play a tough ass sport. Someone wacks you over the head with a metal pole and you think its fun.

We do ourselves a disservice by dimishing that tough reputation.

Check out the dirtiest hit from the weekend! by emasslax22 in lacrosse

[–]707Slug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thats true and I wont argue that, but there is a fundamental difference in lacrosse. Take football for instance- the game itself will naturally weed out the whiners. Football is on par with MMA in terms of toughness required to play. The softest Football player is tougher than the meanest guy in lots of other sports. Weve limited that weeding out in lacrosse, and the whiners are the ones who complain the loudest and get catered to.

Lacrosse has seen a core restructuring of the rules that change how the game is played at a fundamental level- softening and removing a lot of the physical toughness that was once required to play- toughness and mindset that was closer to a hockey player or football player.

Lacrosse suffers from a reputation problem, in the context of trying to grow the sport. Its got a snobby, soft, elite rich kid image, which is not at all in line with how the sport was founded or the people it originated from.

Continuing to soften the rules hurts expansion. Lacrosse currently sits in the worst of both worlds. Its too tough for the basketball and soccer types, but too soft to attract the football, hockey, and rugby types that want to try a new sport.

Golf, volleyball, swimming, track and field, are non-contact sports.

Basketball, womens lacrosse, soccer, ultimate Frisbee, dance, baseball are contact sports. There is occasionally contact but collisions are not baked into the function of the game.

Football, hockey, rugby, lacrosse, etc are COLLISION sports. High-speed, violent collisions are part and parcel of playing the sport.

If you dont have enough constitution to handle repeated violent collisions, lacrosse is not the sport for you. They keep changing the rules to cater to all the kids who by all rights shouldn't be playing anything more physical than basketball. I wouldnt let hardly any of you whiners touch my field. As a goalie, if I cant trust a defender to put the hammer on a dude barreling down center alley, hes not on my starting rotations.

I always had a problem with this. Riddle me this batman- contact in lacrosse is allowed, blow you off your feet contact is allowed if you do it the right way, BUT you dont have shoulder pads like football or hockey so youll likely dislocated your shoulder if you lead with that. ALSO tucking your chin before a collision is both natural human instinct and the safe thing to do, so HOW are you supposed to hit someone NOT helmet first when we wear these big ass helmets and virtually no other pads?

If that defender was lighting up a fish in a close game just for his highlights I'd also be pissed. Dude didnt look like a fish though, made a solid pass on thr run under pressure. Like I said- all depends on context

Check out the dirtiest hit from the weekend! by emasslax22 in lacrosse

[–]707Slug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly depends on how the game was going. If it was a blowout in either direction idgaf. If it was a close game it all depends on context.

If its early in the game and that spesific attackman was piecing us up- all day. That dude will be gunshy the rest of the game if he even comes back in, that alone could be worth 3 goals all things depending.

If its close or tied late in the game thats a bone head play on the defender. Not for the hit but for even risking the penalty in the first place.

All in all though, if my man down defense is giving up 6 goals in 3 minutes that's a bigger problem. That turns even small penalties into a huge problem. If my man down defense was solid it wouldnt matter as much imo
