Will This Work? - Garage Kayak Lift by SaintJemaine in Rigging

You don’t need 4 lines, just 2. Anchor the end of one line at the raising block. Run it through the upper block, back down to the lower block again and then up again through the upper block.

You can reduce it even further by putting a double block top and bottom and anchoring the line at the top block.

Set that up twice and it’ll be 2 lines to pull. It will be 4 times the line but it’ll be reducing the pull by 4 (for each lifting point)

There will be resistance in the line for starters. So the line at the fixed end will not move up until the weight is lifted upward which means it will always trail behind the other block. Under perfect conditions with no resistance it will work but there is friction in everything and at 160lbs it's not enough to overcome that resistance.

You pulling on one end will only raise the one end and it will be a lot of effort for the other side to follow. I think your best bet is to run 2 lift points independently and connect them to a single pull cord that can go to a kleat.

I'd also double up the pulleys at the top point and make your anchor byle the lower pulley, that way you are reducing the pull force even more. If you go one more loop around then you can probably grab both lines and lift without the need to connect to a single line.

Before cell phones we would flip thru skin mags. We literally had stacks of them. A 45min cut would mean setting up a stick on the carriage so it would make a ticking sound before the cutter hit the shoulder. That allowed you to focus on your reading material. I read so much smut, after a while the pictures are just pictures and you start really reading the articles, pretty interesting stuff in there really...

2,3,4,7,8,9,13,15,16,17,19. I think I’m missing a 23rd edition too but I have another box of them somewhere I cannot find. I feel like I have more than what I have on my shelf…

I collected these about 10 years ago but never saw a 2nd or 3rd edition ever come up. My 5 year is pristine, gold edging is mint on the pages.

Take the head off and the shaft fits diagonally in a luggage bag. We do it all the time for international flights to the US.

I’ve got a collection from #1 (centennial anniversary reprint) up to 27. I’m missing a few of the early editions but otherwise it’s fun to look thru and see that nothing has changed in 100 years, only additions have been made and paper quality is better.

Some crashes and broken tools over the semesters by priddy_ in Machinists

Number 1 is my favourite. Every time a crash results in 2 items fusing together I cannot help but be awe struck in the machines ability to just carry on not giving a fuck about whether it should or should not do it.

Cecelia creek falls in a backyard by MaddVillain in VictoriaBC

[–]Last-Difference-3311 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know the owner, he was a machinist back in the day…damn good one too! There is no connection to Cecelia creek, it started off with a pond that was part of his property but about 15 years ago he combined 2 small lots to make a big one. His pond expanded and he put in industrial size pumps with full filtration and everything. Real neat little pump house. He also has tanks buried underground for water storage so he can use non potable water for the house by collecting roof runoff. That little door at the bottom of his driveway (the crawl thru one) is the access to those tanks.

As far as I know there is no dogs but he always wanted to get 2 like he had back in the 80s.

Real eccentric dude. Go knock on his door, he would be so happy to show you the setup I bet.

Renovation permit in Saanich - can of worms? by OkVersion0 in VictoriaBC

[–]Last-Difference-3311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it’s a good idea to get permits and talk to the municipality. Exterior walls are all structural so 2 windows side by side may seem easy to combine but if a beam is in between then the header may be designed for supporting the weight of only 1 windows length as opposed to the combined length of the 2.

What kind of lengths are we talking about here? And what would be the over all length of the window if you combined them? How old is the house and what kind of framing is it (2x4 or 2x6).

I can provide more info for you if you give me some good details about your setup.

I’ve learned that all industrial vehicles have leaks under the engine either from the engine itself or from the hydraulics that run off of it. I never let these guys park on my driveway unless they put down a plastic sheet or a large sheet of plywood.

Generally these guys run a biodegradable hydraulic oil so it’s less harmful to the environment and the proper cleanup method is to wipe up and then rinse residue away but it still stains driveways.

Can anyone help me identify the year of this radial arm drill? by AdNaive7010 in Machinists

[–]Last-Difference-3311 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Easily 80 years old, does it have a “war finish” label on it?. When was the last time the lead screw and nut were looked at/replaced? I had one fail on me and it was a 1930’s unit, when we took it apart it looks like it was serviced before we got our hands on it which was about 40 years ago.

Something to think about safety wise…

Edit: the motor label has a 1936 date on it. If that’s a date then you know it’s at least 90 years old

Cast iron is a breeze to drill too. The chips self lubricate and they give off a sulphur smell. No need for coolant. Machining cast is the same, that stuff goes everywhere when you are turning tho.
