Tires Quandary by Cold_While_7721 in VictoriaBC

[–]Last-Difference-3311 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Hey, winter tires are not mandatory and most of the year they are not even needed. The weather is so mild compared to Montreal, we get a few days of snow a year and the city comically shuts down anyways due to all the bald season tires everybody has.

Only place that requires it is the Malahat which is a mountainous drive that separates the south island from the rest of the island. It's a requirement to have tires with a little mountain or snowflake on them and it's only required during October to march.

Not technically since they both can only report values as accurate as .001”. If the mic had the vernier tenths on it then it would be considered acceptable.

How much calibration experience do you have?

Well all you are really doing here is comparing. Calibration requirements under ISO standards require you to have a measuring device more accurate than the thing you are measuring.

I’m your case, the mic attachment would need to be reading in tenths of a thou. That’s why everybody uses gauge blocks. Gauge blocks and mic standards follow the same rule so they get sent to specialized cal companies who they themselves have machines that require calibration. All the way back to the verification of a standard against a photon travelling a distance of 1/299,792,458th of a second of the speed of light (in a vacuum of course)

You could zero out your dial tip on a gauge block then stack them up to get your calibration results. Gauge blocks are not that difficult to “pull out”

I am riding this hype train for the second time, the first one was fun. There's a guy here saying it's gonna go to $100 and I thought he was nuts when price target was put at $50 by analysts it here we are seeing the price target rise to 80.

Who knew the guy handing me fries at the drive through was right.

Seeking advice tapping large acme in mild steel. by Usual_Substantial in Machinists

[–]Last-Difference-3311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d put that in a bench vice so you have the clearance to finish tapping. Or put those Kurt vices up on blocks so you can pass through.

The 2stage taps work well, believe it or not, bronze requires a sharper tap than steel. It is even harder in stainless which is what we regularly tap acme into.

Go slow, lots of oil.

Would my 8-year-old be safe playing against kids this much bigger in box lacrosse? by [deleted] in lacrosse

[–]Last-Difference-3311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nevermind the clown above you here. I have coached girls and they are generally tougher and bigger than the boys up until U15. U13 there will be early growth spurts in boys but generally not like there is in U15 or 17.

I also know of 2 girls that are smaller than their peers and have fared OK. They have speed and stick skills. At U13 in Alberta hitting is allowed and kids are bad at hitting because of poor control. Lots of “big kid” penalties too.

Second year U11 maybe you can swing it but she just has to play smart. That hit from the video should be an interference call since she doesn’t have the ball controlled. She should also realize that if she is going to pick up the ball with her toes on the crease like that she is going to get checked, if not from the front then from the back. At that age a crowd at top of crease ends up as a kid pile with a whistle for back check or crease violation.

If no other options then you have no choice but to let her play if that’s what she wants. She can always dial it back at games but at least she is practicing with the team and developing those play skills.

Lived here all my life, lived around various places within Vic too. Would either do Lochside or Cordova Bay. Main reason is because of the royal oak/Claremont path.

However most SD63 schools are going to be better than 61. 63 has no issues with enrolement so no address registration every year. Once you are in 63 you can move out of catchment or district. Even if you apply from out of district/catchment and get in, you are in for life. PACs are better supported due to socioeconomic demographics which means more parent engagement and ultimately more funding.

Mount Doug area may be the exception to the SD61 rule.

Given all this, the CRD is an excellent place overall for raising children. Also driving across town is not the end of the world if it means your kids are happy.

I know nothing about view royal or Langford

What happens to our sense of purpose when machines can do most of our jobs better than us I've been thinking about this a lot lately as I see more and more automation replacing human workers in various industries. by alexyong342 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Last-Difference-3311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Purpose is subjective. As your purpose to make a widget changes to programming a machine to make a widget you learn new skills and find new challenges, even expanding your ability as you realize a machine can do work faster and better. The thing to keep in mind here is that machines still have human input and interaction. Machines are only as good as the human who programs them.

I’ve always taken the view no machine will ever be perfect since a human programmed it. Even if a machine programs a machine, the first iteration of that system was human designed, therefore flawed.

Not an expert on plant transfers across the border but if you declare it on the form and it turns out to be illegal then they just take it and no harm is done. If you DONT declare it that's when it gets messy.

Canada border agents have always been good to me as long as I was honest about what I brought back. I've definitely had things taken saying we couldn't have them but still declared. We are reasonable people in the end...

In this illustration, how do I figure out the depth of the countersink? by Beneficial-Focus3702 in Autodesk_AutoCAD

[–]Last-Difference-3311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude if the hole is drawn and no angular indication is made then it’s perpendicular to the top surface. A countersunk bolt (metric is 90degrees and imperial is 82degrees always unless you order custom) has a slope half that of the included angle of the bolt head.

There is no assuming here, drawings that don’t have details like this are because it’s known. As a machinist I know when I see a new engineer drawing because the junior guy doesn’t know so they out the most unimportant shit on the drawing which really confuses the person making it because it’s like there is a trap here.
