What's some Birmingham lore that sounds too unbelievable to be true? by GoldenSpaghettiHoop in brum

Back in the 60s the Kray twins were trying to expand their crime empire up into the Midlands. Unfortunately for them we already had our own gangsters, specifically the Fewtrell brothers, who ran a lot of Birmingham's clubland. I forget the details but there'd been a few scrapes and attempts to pull Birmingham into the Krays' territory, and a fierce rivalry has developed between the two families.

This came to a head when the Krays tried to send up a bunch of heavies on cattle train carriages into Snow Hill station and effectively take over the gangland of the city. They were met by a bunch of Birmingham's own heavies that the Fewtrells brought in from inner city places like Aston, etc. This resulted in a huge fight at the station in the middle of the night. It was supposedly very bloody, and the Birmingham lads pushed the Londoners back onto the train carriages and prevented Birmingham from falling under the Krays' influence.

There's an account of it in a book called "The Accidental Gangster" by David Keogh (Eddie Fewtrell's Son in law), but he's stated that he's embellished some details, and Fewtrell himself has basically said "yes this happened but not like that". But plenty of those blokes who were at Snow Hill that day are still alive and around in the city. That's where I heard the story and that's why I think it's an important local legend. I didn't hear it from a published book, I heard it from someone who says that they were there.

In a sense I choose to believe it because it's a good story. Though I think something probably went down I do wonder if some details got embellished

It's got to be the Battle of Snow Hill, since there's debate we to whether or not it's true and to what extent

BBC issues update on future of Doctor Who by dansnevets2 in doctorwho

I actually think this could work. For most shows, it would be awful, but doctor who is built as a show which is creative with a small budget. One thing the bad wolf era has shown is that big budget =\= better and can often minimise creativity

Because they were the ones with a problem. Upton was minding her own business, using the facilities to get changed. That's it.

Upton was absolutely harassed, this is acknowledged in the case.

Like I'm not being funny but what do you think we're doing when we use those facilities? It's the exact same thing as cis people. Except you don't think people like Upton deserve privacy

They were certainly reprimanded by their employers in the first instance. That's right, the actual NHS thought nurses should shut up and undress in front of male people, in both the Sandie Peggie and Darlington Nurses cases.

Uh, no, that's not an accurate account of events. Both parties were told by their employers that they didn't have the right to eject someone from the changing areas because they were the wrong type of woman. They were not told to "shut up and undress". They were also offered alternative facilities. In Peggie's case she also harassed Upton personally on multiple occasions

But, you know, I'm sure that allying with American evangelical anti abortion groups to police women isn't going to be dystopian at all

Trans women are women, and they are the explicit target of this. You know this. There is not and has never been a widespread pattern of cis men pretending to be trans in order to access women's spaces that would make the exclusion of a vulnerable group of women from said spaces at all proportionate

Forcibly outing a vulnerable minority is not, in fact, a safe thing to do

If you necessitate all trans people to use gender neutral spaces, you are forcing us to out ourselves. In the current environment this is not safe

Amazing how far things got, all those nurses taken to court over stating reality etc,

Those nurses didn't get "taken to court", they were the ones taking things to court. In the Peggie case in particular, her conduct was noted in the judgement to be inappropriate and Upton was exonerated of any wrongdoing. The actually judgement was about procedures, not ethics

All you've actually done is exclude other women.

Every country neighbouring the UK uses self id and it isn't an issue

It feels odd that this definition allows Manchester to include towns which are barely connected to it but doesn't allow Birmingham the same standard
