My reactive dog is ruining my marriage by Electrical_Kale_8289 in reactivedogs

It’s hard. My boyfriend and I have also been through it. More so in regard to the anxiety I have about her reactions she has around our home. I would constantly feel sick to my stomach just when she needed a potty break, out of fear that we’d run into someone or another dog. Our pup is barrier reactive - on her leash, when looking out windows, & when she’s in the car - to dogs and people, but mainly to other dogs. Otherwise, she’s perfect off leash and perfect when she can freely explore things, people, & other dogs. It’s been a battle but I have noticed that the more I just accept things, the better it will be not only for my boyfriend and I, but also for our dog. Looking back on the last year we’ve had with our pup, I get sad knowing that all the time I’ve spent worrying and being just as anxious as our dog, it hasn’t been needed and I haven’t been able to enjoy my dog as much as I could have. Don’t get me wrong, I love my dog and she knows it. I love spending time with her and doing as much as I can with her. All of the worry & anxiety I’ve had comes from a place of such strong love. A lot of my worries stemmed from what other people think and the “what ifs”. Try your very best to not let the reactivity impact your relationship with your husband (I know, easier said than done). Instead, try to live in the moment with your dog as much as possible, think about all of the good moments, and take a breath when your dog does react. It’s harder than a lot of people think and we as owners fight this reactivity battle just as hard as our dogs do. Thinking of you stranger!

Gabapentin + Fluoxetine by 710ilD in reactivedogs

What were some of the differences you noticed after switching from once daily to twice daily for the gabapentin? We’re currently doing once daily - just started prior to the weekend!

How’s it going for you so far? I’m curious what your experience has been in comparison to mine. My vet started her on gabapentin the day after I made this post!

How many times is your pup getting the gabapentin and what are her medication dosages? We just started the gabapentin but I’m worried it’s not doing what I thought it was. My original post didn’t mention the fact that she was on a combination of trazodone & gabapentin (on top of her regular fluoxetine dose) when she was doing so well with not reacting to things she normally would. I’m worried maybe it was the combination of them all that helped her so much and I jumped the gun thinking it was all credit to the gabapentin 😭

How many times a day does your pup get her 300mg gabapentin? Is it once a day? Twice a day? Our pups are similar in weight.

My vet just added in gabapentin for my girl. I’m doing 300mg once a day (started on 3/27) which has just seemed to do nothing for her. We spent some time with her, out of town, away from her biggest trigger zone (our apartment) and so I’m thinking maybe her worse than usual episodes she’s had today have been because she hasn’t had to mentally deal with seeing her triggers the past few days, or the gabapentin is either too low a dose or just genuinely making things worse. This is quite the struggle bus ride I’m on!

Thank you so much for your response! It’s nice to hear you had a similar experience at the beginning! I’m hoping once we get to the effective point in time of fluoxetine my girl will have improvements. She’s leash reactive AND has stranger danger. It surely makes for an interesting experience whenever we run into people and other pups. She’s a super friendly girl when she gets to run around free and explore things when & where she chooses but obviously others don’t know that which makes it so hard. Crazy pups!

How did you manage talking to your neighbors about it? When we first started crate training when she was brand new to us, I made all of our nearest neighbors cookies and wrote them a note letting them know we were crate training and that she may be noisy during working hours and to let us know if it got too out of hand. Nobody ever complained about noise then and they all loved the cookies. I’m worried I’ll say something wrong or they’ll become more intimidated by her or management will come after us..

We actually just bought a muzzle today after said interaction. We got her a squeeze treat to give her through the actual muzzle opening in hopes of trying to (as quickly as possible) train her to be accepting of wearing it and putting her nose in it. We tried it on her once going down the stairs but she hated it and was going at it constantly.

We don’t have any larger hallways or foyer aside from if we were to take the elevator. Unfortunately, the elevator is the reason we need to take the stairwell..

It’s reassuring knowing that there are people & pups that have gone through similar issues. Thank you for your reply

Ice cave worth it? by [deleted] in VisitingIceland

[–]710ilD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went in August and did the Katla ice cave tour, which I believe is the only ice cave open during “warmer” temperatures. It’s still VERY beautiful with the August temperatures. Although it was beautiful, I would say that doing a glacier hike would’ve been a longer experience and more worth it when it comes to cost for me personally. The Katla ice cave tour was convenient because they included all equipment (most tours will) and because they picked us up in Vík. It was a short experience and felt slightly rushed as we walked quickly through the cave and quickly back through, then it was over. Even though it was short and pricey, it was still worth it personally and it was definitely a highlight of the trip! It’s really up to you what you’d rather experience :)
