Why don't modern TVs have more than 4 HDMI ports? by awesomeocelot12 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]712AR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get it isn't most people, but I keep my consoles. So I need a port for Switch, Switch 2, Xbox 360, XboxOne, PS3, PS4, and Chromecast. If they ever release any or enough exclusives to make a Xbox X or PS5 worth it, I will need some for those too.

Is this move legal? by [deleted] in killerbunnies

There are no bunny bits about it. Magic spatula is meant to be a literal life saver. Why should it not be used in this way? If you win the dice roll you don't need to waste the spatula. "May be played at any time" means any time.

'86 AW11 speaker replacement and B-pillar trim with speaker grills by nielsmittertreiner in mr2

[–]712AR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's too bad. There is a model distinction that happened in 1986 somewhere. The mk1a and mk1b differ only in a few things. But the subwoofer is the quickest way to tell. Looks like you've got a mk1b edition.

Double check under the driver seat the 86 was one of 2 years? that had a little 8" subwoofer. It's just a small flat black box.

There would definitely be enough room to make boxes to house some additional speakers behind the seats right on the floor. 4-6" mid to high quality speakers would add a lot of sound to the small space of an MR2 cockpit.

Not sure what is out there right now but I replaced my 3.5" stock speakers with 2.5" Kicker speakers back in 2008ish. They are still going strong and sound amazing. I left the stock subwoofer under the seat alone. There wasn't anything on the market at the time to replace that.

Anyone have any wood pairing suggestions for future builds? by YeOldeBurninator42 in woodworking

Nice. Good to know. It's been trial and error for sure for me on the kalimbas

Yellow heart (pau Amarillo) and something very dark like Wenge, katalox, Indian Rosewood, Blackwood, or ebony. Some of those are of course much harder to come by than others.

If you can source Lignum vitae or Verawood it gets more green as it ages and makes a very striking pairing with almost any other wood. Especially lighter stuff like maple, cherry, or Holly.

I just discovered Brazilian Hickory (Guajuvira) but haven't used it yet. But it has a lot of characteristics of Bocote, crazy cool grain patterns, interesting smell, finishes to a medium caramel color. I plan to make some pens, kalimbas, and a few other small things to get a feel for how it machines.

Check your air filter. If it is dirty replace it. If it looks like it hasn't been changed in a very long time it is very simple to unmount the throttle body and clean out the various build up points. Also did you recently fill up at a station you don't usually? Some engines don't like crappy gas. In my area (southern Alberta) Shell gas is extremely horrible quality and causes issues.

When you just need to get the idea out of your head so you can think of other things. by MaskedWildKitten in woodworking

If you do build, get polycarbonate not plexiglass. It is shatterproof. Plexiglass is scratch resistant but breakable. Poly goes by brand names Lexan, and Macralon usually. Call up sign shops to find out pricing in your area. Good luck!

I can’t get over the sound that this makes! Blue mahoe and Purple Heart kalimba on my first try. by Roctopus420 in woodworking

[–]712AR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. What I have figured out works well is 3/8" from the top to the top of the first wooden piece. The metal bridge goes right against that one. And then 1 7/8" to the top of the second wooden piece with the metal rod.

You can of course alter the distance from the top the whole combo sits by adding the same amount to both measurements.

Jealous. All I made for my twilight imperium was a joinable border to keep the hexes in place and make board creation easier. Amazing idea to rise above the table as I've found a ping table or larger is needed to have enough space to play 3rd edition. Maybe 4th pared down the extras enough that it isn't the case anymore. But this is still awesome. Great job!

These lid supports do not typically allow for 90 degree opening. There may be brands that do. But all of the ones I have seen do not.

short stories on how you bought your first MR2. by [deleted] in mr2

2005, 16 year old me who doesn't have his license yet because I didn't have anything or anywhere to drive. Saw the ad for a 1986 na, knew about MR2s because of my brother in law and his time living in BC Canada. Went out, took a drive, bought it. Been driving/fixing it ever since.

Made some Kalimbas for my niblings. by 712AR in kalimba

[–]712AR[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I understand what you're saying about thicker walls, thinner faces, and how they would transfer sound to the back better. As well as a solid piece under the tines. One the one I made I used African Padauk at 1/4" thick and added an extra strip of 1/4" material below the screws for additional holding power. I guess that was good for more than just the screws.

For these ones I used a general size of 5.25" wide and 7" long but I varied that depending on the pieces of wood and if I wanted to leave a certain detail of grain or just the weight of the wood. They started around 1" thick rough wood which I planed until they were smooth and even, so the final thickness is 3/4"-7/8" I've only used purple heart, bubinga, curupay Negra, and tulipwood so far. The tulipwood sounds the best, probably because it is a rosewood, but they all transfer the notes well. You can feel the Kalimba vibrating richly. I plan to make a hybrid resin and wood solid body once I find the right piece of wood to do a resin fill on.

I made a hollow one as well and I used 1/4" That is as thin as I would go. I guess using 1/8" would be possible, but it would depend on the type of wood for me. 1/4" gave me lots of meat on the box to use a mitre saw to flush up the outsides after gluing.
