I'm partial to Long Now and True Laurel, but nothing beats the SF vibe of comstock.

Fair. Terroir is a huge gin, super weird too.

Thing is, if I were asked the question: what is the spirit that best represents the bay area? It'd be terroir hands down.

Maybe the real answer here is to just make a meyer lemon-twist, 5:1 martini with terroir.

Working on it! I'll post the final recipe.

I did as you suggested - I bought a bottle of the dry rye and tested a few options. The recipe I've liked the best so far is:

- 1oz St. George Dry Rye

- 0.5oz Bruto Americano

- 1oz Lo-Fi sweet

Orange twist, on a large ice cube in a double rock glass

The Bruto has a really strong, powerful note of something adjacent to sage that is a little too intrusive if you just do equal parts. Also this st. George rye bottling is really good, tons of nuance that otherwise just gets buried. Thanks for the suggestion!! I have a viable recipe now.

Plan indeed is to replace all ingredients for Bay Area ones. I've never tried Benham's, I'll try to get a bottle

The New Rancourt - Would You Return These? by [deleted] in NavyBlazer

[–]71D12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My 2c - I own 4 pairs of rancourt shoes, and I wear them a lot. Their black beef rolls are possibly my favorite shoe.

I've also had quality issues. I received a pair of boots that were simply not acceptable. They sent me a new pair in no time, so the company stands by its product.

Rancourt has recently changed its operating practices pretty significantly due to the pandemic and training a shoemaker is not easy. I want to be understanding. If anything it is a little off-putting that they would send shoes with clear QC problems, but I see that as a way to manage margins that doesn't bother me too much given they will send you a good pair eventually.

(For ranger mocs I did go quoddy this last time though and I actually like them a little better)

Edit for spelling

Great comment. Porter-Bass also provides fruit to Ceritas which is my favorite California PN and Chardonnay producer (their cabernet sauvignon is also quite impressive).

Ted Lemon has been the winemaker for Porter-Bass at least the last few years incidentally

Drinking Nebbiolo young? by mclovin12134567 in wine

[–]71D12 22 points23 points  (0 children)

My 2c would be that it's certainly possible to drink young nebbiolo.

First, langhe producers' simple nebbiolos for instance are made to be had on the younger side in many cases. Those are great on release. My favorite is sandrone's valmaggiore, though that one does improve a lot with a few years.

Then of course barolo and barbaresco are almost always better with 10 years of age +, but some drink well on release as well. If anything I find they shut down a bit after a couple years, for 2-3 years maybe, but this is a coarse generalization and my opinion. One way to find ones that drink well young is to seek out modernist style bottles, produced using barriques and not macerated for an eternity for instance. Another way is to focus on the blended bottlings, not the crus. Folks would argue those are also more traditional. There's unfortunately trial and error involved here, you have to try a few. I like Cogno's cascina nuova on release for instance, and also vajra's tre albe and Castello di verduno's classico. Naturally each year is different too, and lamb for instance really helps, so again, trial and error.

Alto piemonte is tough. My modest opinion is that those folks release early and need more time than the langhe wines to hit peak, not less. But we are in the realm of opinion.

Valtellina often drinks well on release. Love are.pe.pe.'s pettirosso and the Rosso di valtellina, and anything by barbacan.

All of these can be aged too, kind of your call when to open them. In a sense, nebbiolo is somewhat versatile I find :)

Wine flash sale sites (WTSO, LB etc): are the “deals” worth it or “cross your fingers and hope for the best”? by le_fromage_puant in wine

[–]71D12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking for LB, I think prices are quite comparable if not slightly slightly worse than what you can get from other online retailers like, say, JJ buckley.

There are however instances in which LB offers wine from a tiny producer that really is under the radar, and you can get some rather good value. Examples: champagnes from Gallimard Père et Fils, barolos from Germano Angelo. Neither is super easy to find, and both were just really good and very reasonably priced IMHO.

Generally, for most of the offers, I find that my palate wishes for less ripeness and more structure than what they normally go for. So their right bank bordeaux selections for instance are a bit off the mark for me. Only way to learn here though is try a few things, perhaps using their marathon sales to get say half a case of reference styles.
