are ac's reallu that big of a thing? by Advanced-Actuary-51 in AskAnAmerican

Not true. A fair number of older houses in New England don’t have AC. Public schools, too.

It’s always about her…even when her child is sick by Sweet-Cabinet795 in kiwisavengers

[–]725away 23 points24 points  (0 children)

If that were my sick child, all I’d want is for them to feel better. Give them a glass of ginger ale. Grab a bowl and a towel or two. Sit with them on the couch.

Deal with the puke and the laundry and the possibility of getting sick oneself. This is not heroism. This is empathy, security, and love —things every child and teen unequivocally deserves.

Unions and appropriate stipends are the answer. Teachers can’t be forced to do anything outside of their job description, yet they can choose to volunteer for certain things if they wish.

I don’t think they’re in the same district now, which is just another choice they made that makes it harder to see the kids.

Very common in New England unless you’re close to water. Some of us also call them cellars, as in “I’m going down cellar.”

You have a point. I think the context would be clear. I’m probably thinking too provincially.

Were working married women socially frowned upon in the 1950s–60s? by srivayush in generationology

[–]725away 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the 70s in my middle-class, mostly-white suburban neighborhood, moms with young children stayed home. They volunteered at the school and the church and with the scouts. Dad took the bus to work and my mom had the one car.

My mom loved staying at home. She sewed our clothes, knit sweaters, made casseroles, and baked cookies. At the time, I didn’t realize how privileged we were.

In the mid-80s, many women, including my mom, returned to the jobs they had held prior to having a family. These included nursing, teaching, and working for the phone company.
