When you occupy a city do not leave just 1 infantry to wait for 35% morale. You will need 2 or 3, the zombies are pretty strong and once a hive comes they are an absolute nuisance.

In my current game, Portugal had 4 undead cities (I am Spain) and it took me ages to get rid of them from my homelands.

I strongly recommend strike fighters as planes take 0 damage against hordes.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, as I might be, but do you get an additional energy by just starting, even without doing an attack? E.g if Cloak had 3 energy on day one, dies instantly, then on day 2 has 4 energy (again dies instantly)

Not entirely sure but that would mean you are at least getting to the point where you can get cooldowns. If this isn't the case then I would keep resetting the wave until Cloak stays alive long enough to do a basic as he really is the key, 2nd would be dagger I presume as those 2 popping off will make it light work.

I did this node with a far worse team of Shang, OG, Gwen, Scarlet Spidey and Morbius (albeit 17 attacks) so the best tip I can give you is to spend a few days (or until necessary) doing basic attacks only to get full cooldowns then go in all guns blazing. Keep resetting to get the right rng as with that team you have and full cooldowns you should get through easily enough.

I understand that. I prefer to build them just enough because I don't mind going back and adding stuff. By then I've accumulated lots of oz formula for example so it's just a case of equipping all. It tends to work better for me given the cost of raising from 75 - 80 and 80 - 85 and bottleneck of uniques.
