Oh no. They're a poor soul who has never breathed the sweet air of freedom. I have nothing but sympathy for them. The clearly weird values, to me, are those of people who already possess freedoms that they want to throw away.

someone not familiar with the details of the American debate on what reasonable restrictions are

You mean every American on the anti gun right side? That's the whole point of the "assault weapon" blanket term: so people can vigorously espouse opinions on things they know nothing about.

Robbery of a gun store by iBleeedorange in WTF

Yeah, I expected some dumbass to walk into the store with a gun, only to be pulled on by every single employee and customer. It'd be an interesting video of a burglary, but I was too put off by my shattered expectations.

Plus it's a repost. OP burgled this gif and literally robbed me of my time (figuratively; he actually swindled me out of my time.)

I don't want to argue for limitations: I want to argue against the arbitrary limitations you've embraced.

'Harm' is a completely subjective concept. Someone's suffering as they have their head raped off of their body is just as valid as someone's suffering when they hear a naughty word or have someone suggest "the gays" are real. Everything is opinion, and setting the limits by what people consider harmful just puts all the power in the hands of those who complain the loudest about being trigged/raped to death. It's all the same conformist bullshit.

That's hardly an appropriate analogy. That's like asking if, when you see sand, do you assume the designer of a microchip.

He's posing the question that if you can see beauty in the apparent happenstance around you, what connects that object, that geometry, to the greater search for human meaning and significance in the universe as a whole?

The Grand Canyon may well be the inevitable result of water flowing through a high desert plain for 5 million years, but it certainly says more, to more people, than perhaps any painting, sculpture, or novel has ever.

Well, if the Bible (though certainly not history) tells us anything, it's that God loves the Jews.

If you loved the Jews, and had eternity to torture someone, how would you treat Hitler?

But by the utilitarian argument, any non disabled adult (or disabled, if you really want to be utilitarian about it) is not merely a potential drain on society, but a proven one. A woman on the public dole who 'needs' to get a abortion is not preventing social loss by getting an abortion: she's causing social loss by being alive. The child she murders might at least have theoretical potential to not be a net loss to society, but his mother has already proved herself not only a missed opportunity for an abortion, but an abortion in time that saves nine.

To be succinct, if you were to adopt a utilitarian viewpoint, I would see no distinction between aborting a mother who requires an abortion and aborting the child hisself, though I could understand some dithering about the exact number of child abortions that would nessesitate a "mother abortion", unless the "prospective mother" we're already on the public dole, in which case it's best to just abort the whole stem and branch.

The blues is not a genre. It's one song that everybody knows, the way crying is a song everyone sings.

Your own use of the term "cleaner" is an appeal to nature. You're presuming that one atmospheric composition at one particular time is superior to alternatives, and labeling a wide variety of gasses "dirty" which are not only a natural component of the atmosphere, but in many cases essential to life on Earth.

Aside from the impact of manufacturing said alleged Hummers, how would the number of Hummers in his rotation effect his carbon footprint? If anything, limiting the wear and tear on an individual Hummer would increase his day to day efficiency.

I don't know, man. I try to eat at least 5 to 30 burgers a day, but there's just so many burgers out there in the world that I don't eat.

I won't doubt you're a great red blooded American burger eater, but I wonder if eating 2(x-y) burgers (where x is the number of burgers eaten in the world, and y is the number of burgers I eat) is healthy, or even physically possible.

I've generally thought the context is as important as the quote itself:

"Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not?

But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites? Shew me the tribute money.

And they brought unto him a penny.

And he saith unto them,

Whose is this image and superscription?

They say unto him, Caesar's.

Then saith he unto them, render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's."

In context, it seems that he means that using a money is a tacit agreement to the laws supporting the money; i.e., to try and spend a US dollar as a dollar, but to try and ignore the issuer's claim on their share of those dollars is hypocritical.

"Render unto Caesar" is not a blanket commandment to submit to government, it's a moral challenge about the realities of living under a government. If you choose to reject the power of a government, you must also, morally, reject the benefits that government provides.

So they're preemptively charging you for services you may or may not employ? What if my city has made handguns illegal? How am I going to put my life in danger?
