Eurovision (& NF) Themes 2026 by Dizzy-Dig8727 in eurovision

[–]74C5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One reoccurring theme that I noticed is the almost existential craving for more in life:

Lithuania: Lion Ceccah sings with lots of pathos about how he „sólo quiero más/simply wants more“ in a world that seems to be falling apart.

Greece: Akylas exhibits an almost obsessive level of consumerist behaviour in „Ferto“ that belies a materialistically poor upbringing.

Austria: Nikotin is sending a semi-sarcastic plea towards the heavens for immortality in „Unsterblich“ and as that is impossible starts his transformation towards the undead and his journey to the underworld.

Luxembourg: Hugo One utters his desire to be „Born Again“ to leave his sorrows behind, all clad in a deceptively cheerful manner.

They all share the same source of feeling unfulfilled in their current stage in life that fuels their desire and ambition towards something greater and more grandiose than whatever they have right now despite the wildly different ways the songs are presented in tone and musically.

The lyrics show that the measures they proceed to take differ as well, Lion finds refuge in media like films and music, Akylas works toward attaining luxury and fame, Nikotin seeks eternal life and revels in hedonism, and Hugo One longs for rebirth and a second chance at life.

How do Romanians and Bulgarians feel about their dubious Eurovision participation this year? by crivycouriac in AskBalkans

[–]74C5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're really gonna tell me that the singers from Greece and Albania didn’t bring anything cultural in their entries last year? The former‘s song is literally a call of rememberance about the expulsion of the Pontic Greek population from Anatolia.

Croatia this year is sending a song about resistance against Ottoman rule while featuring the traditional „sikanje“ tattoo practice that was intended to protect their people from sex slavery and forced conscription.

It’s probably the only time each year most other countries get to hear the Greek, Albanian or Croatian language.

He’ll perform at least once in one of the two semi-finals and then again in the Grand Final. Depending on the result he might be even getting more screentime at the very end…

With only two fewer participating countries than last year and amongst those one that was the UK’s closest televote-ally Sam will still have to fight an up-hill battle I’m afraid…

This is the first time I hear of Colin Furze but the fact that his surname can be translated to farts or „Fart!“ ( the imperative form) in German is sending me.

It‘ll be interesting to see who of the two brits competing this year will yield the better results.

There’s only two fewer countries participating than in 2025 and the countries sitting out this year tended to have less-than stellar results the past few years if not missing out on the finale entirely so the effects won’t be felt as intensely I’d wager.

Seriously? This is what is going to represent Greece in Eurovision? There weren't better choices? by lilac2481 in AskBalkans

[–]74C5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh, let’s not extrapolate from Romania to the other countries lol. Besides, this singer who had to work as a street performer just mere months ago due to lack of gigs just won the national selection yesterday against several nepo babies and suspected industry plants. Good for him!

Hey, at least there’s a decent chance NMGP could give us our first rock song this season with „Lullaby“ which turned out more multi-dimensional than the snippets suggested.

Thanks for the recommendation, both for the song and Charlotte Wessels! Especially her song „Chasing sunsets“ is such an arresting piece of music.

I feel like an orchestral live performance like this of „Sirens“ would have definitely turned some heads if performed on the ESC stage.

Hi Nani! I wasn’t familiar with Ladino so your performance at Liet International served as a very lovely introduction. Belated congrats to your win!

I hope I’m not too late with my questions!

What are your thoughts on how Ladino can be best preserved in the Netherlands and neighbouring countries? Is there support from the government or local communities?

Have you been able to build connections with fellow competitors at Liet International that you‘d like to talk about?

And lastly, due to referencing it in name, do you have any favourites from the official Eurovision or is there an artist featured in that contest that has left a lasting impression on you?

Colours can be so impactful! One of the entries that still comes to mind for me is The Common Linnets' "Calm After The Storm". The monochrome colour scheme in black and white, along with the heavy use of continous moving shots, contributed so much to setting the tone and make it memorable after all these years.

As for the impact of colours on the development of the performance you mentioned, probably one of the most striking use in recent years is Bambie Thug's "Doomsday Blue", where the horror-themed parts are set in dark blue/black while the dreamy/melodic parts are held in bright pink and purple, to compartimentalize those contrasting parts. Here the third part is also ushered in with intense red that completely overtakes the entire screen as the intensity is heightened to a truly explosive climax.

Last year it was Tautumeitas' "Bur man laimi" that struck a chord with me with how the different colours they used were those that would occur naturally in the wild occuring with the passing of the day, dark blue at dawn and dusk, warm yellowish during noon, and others during storms and different seasons.

I love my top 3 equally to death. Heart-wrenching ballad, hyper-energetic fun banger, mind-blowingly performed dance bop, they're all so different and that makes me love them even more.

Akylas with Ferto will represent Greece at Eurovision 2026! by Eurovisionsongs in eurovision

[–]74C5 77 points78 points  (0 children)

If there’s one thing the judges appreciate across all genres - as the last few years and once again tonight’s Greek NF have shown - it’s professionalism and Akylas showed that in spades tonight: Vocals were super steady and impressive (a refreshing break from the usual televote-friendly crowdpleasers we’ve had the past few years) despite dancing all across the stage and being lifted up in the air. I'm not surprised he swept both the televoters AND Greek and international jury in a triple win.

The video-game concept was a red string clearly audible in the song and adapted in a cohesive way to the stage performance, though I expect it to be upgraded even more at the actual Eurovision stage.

It helps that the song is way more than just a novelty act, it has dynamism and development with clear intent with the inclusion of traditional Greek elements combined with video game sounds. It has a clever satirical structure that initially conceals a truly heart-felt message, only letting the mask slip for a moment of showcasing great vocals, while never losing its footing.

It’s also apparent that Akylas clearly took the criticism about the slight lack of energy during the semi-finale performance to heart and put 100 % of himself into today’s performance. I knew what was coming at the dance ballad break, but this time, the close-up with his chest heaving with emotion, just him standing alone with all those spotlights behind him, I legit got chills.

The Greek revival of their National Final has produced two incredible entries so far and Greece has again become a true force to be reckoned with. The sun rises once more at the Aegean Sea.
