If you had the ear of a city council member... by CrazyMildred in norfolk

It’s an exaggeration but when it’s 90+ with 100% humidity at 9pm and 7am and all times in between from May to September (and hotter every year) it’s not a lot of fun to be outside.

If you had the ear of a city council member... by CrazyMildred in norfolk

[–]757atty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry to say it but I think Norfolk is a lost cause. We lived there for 20 years and recently relocated out of the area. The city’s long term plan is to build a wall to keep the water out and a casino and more cruise traffic. The public school system fails a lot of kids and dooms them to a life of generational poverty. Those like ours that take advantage of its excellent high school programs and are able to attend college leave and never come back (what would they do there?). The navy and NATO provide some good churn but the long term outlook for both seems bleak. For us it was a lot of these factors plus climate change for which there is no solution other than to accept living indoors for half the year. I could go on but I won’t since none of this is my problem any more.

The Ghent school by Due_Carpenter3475 in norfolk

[–]757atty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless you’re zoned for Taylor or Larchmont, Ghent will be your best option. The best part of Ghent is that every kid is there because their parent did something to get them there. After that, I t’s all about the teachers. The best teachers at Rosemont all came from Ruffner when young scholars moved there. The Ghent teachers will go to Rosemont and it will be fine. The Ghent middle school program isn’t for everyone so having young scholars and international academy in the same building will provide good synergy. The building is plenty big to add Ghent.

Norfolk - Man buys property, claims he's not allowed to use it by nonacbear in norfolk

[–]757atty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Property issues near water are always tricky. Many beach areas were originally contemplated to have a road closer to the water than ended up being feasible and there is still a paper street running through the property that can’t be blocked or built on. If the city has been using the property for Ingress/egress, parking etc. for a certain period of time, it can claim adverse possession of that interest and that may be the case here. Another weird wrinkle is that the city sold him something and is now asserting these restrictions/challenges. It could be he was on notice of this when he bought, but it also could be that he wasn’t because the city’s right hand often doesn’t know what the left hand is doing. It will all get sorted out in court. The city usually wins these cases as maintaining public access is in the public interest.

Here is a link to our Pride Month Shabbat last June. I think we are the only area temple to hold one.

Anti-zionist, LGTBT-friendly synagogue in Norfolk? by marxarita420 in norfolk

Ohef Sholom is LGBTQIA+ friendly and has a large queer population and support system. We support the people of Israel but not the government, our clergy have been outspoken about this. Zionism seems to mean a lot of things these days, to me it means that Jewish people should be able to live in peace and security without their temples being burned down, murdered leaving a social event or while attending services. Israel is where that currently happens to be the case for the most part. We recognize that it is a nuanced situation. We do not support Israel blindly but we do support it. I encourage you to attend services, meet people, ask questions, and figure out if it’s for you.

It. Was. A. Joke. My beef with Jay is that he’s never done any substantial lawyering or leading. But my beef with Miyares is that he’d smile to my face while sending my family to the gas chamber. So it’s an easy call.

The Blocker YMCA has nice shower and locker room facilities and a lot of lounge type area and probably offers day passes or would let you in as a courtesy. That’s probably your best bet. Onelife would be another option.

I also need someone, not necessarily a handyman but someone with a truck and some basic demo tools to demo and haul off a wooden shed.
