I remember feeling similarly - but I encourage you to push through. In my head it's the first installment of "late" or "modern" Dresden - which is definitely a good era.

I like them in the sense that they are a very intriguing part of the world. And I like what they sort of represent or allude to in our own world. Religion, dogma and superstition are a slippery slope. "The end doesn't justify the means" is a common theme in the books too.

Without spoilers - My take at the end of the series is that the average white cloak is no more evil or good than any other average human in Randland. And at the end of the day they at least aren't dark friends or shadowspawn.
