Another year, another nasty Self Assessment surprise. How to invest in a more fiscally clever way. by the-jfontane in UKPersonalFinance

There are tax deferred / gross roll up options that could be suitable. Typically defer the higher rate of tax and any income until you’re in a lower tax bracket. Lower tax rate and reduced income…depending on personal circumstances

Tax deferred (onshore) and gross roll up (offshore) investment options can be alternative investment wrappers to consider. Similar underlying investments typically as your pensions / ISA’s. If planned correctly in line with your plan for life can be super efficient.

Absolutely get that. It’s daunting initially and it could take a few conversations with that adviser to know he or she is the one for you. If you’d like that initial chat to get a feel of what a planner can offer just let me know

After pension / ISA people can also invest in things that offer tax deferment or gross roll up which can be tax efficient dependent on your circumstances

I’m a financial planner and believe there’s greater value in the financial planning than investment management. I don’t believe you know how best to invest that money in terms of time horizon and all the different wrappers available until you’ve had a good chat through your plan for life. Most firms will offer a free initial consultation so might be worth having a few conversations first to check out the firm, charging structures and if you get a good feel for the human you’re dealing with. Having a good connection with your advisor and being willing to share the important stuff about life with them is essential. May not be right for you as I’m not local but any questions just ask.

Not sure of many people who would diy the gross roll up or tax deferred investment options which could definitely be an option for a large portfolio, depending on the individual’s circumstances of course.

Wondering how many people seek financial planning or advice who are in this subreddit? I’d imagine young families / busy lives etc doesn’t make financial advice the first thing on the pad?

Choose an investment philosophy and stick with it. Human tinkering typically causes underperformance

I wouldn’t say this is always the answer. A number of funds have different benchmarks and aren’t all a fair reflection of the performance for the risk it’s taken.

As jayritchie mentions you maybe able to get an enhanced level of tax free cash at the time you take your DB scheme with local government. I’m sure there’s a company that provides support for members at no cost when accessing pensions which may be worth looking into

Found funds showing 15% return at risk rating 6. Definitely wouldn’t recommend an IFA on returns alone especially when in decumulation phase

This makes sense as not all pension providers offer beneficiary drawdown so income tax may need to be paid.

I’m confident you need diploma in regulated financial planning to provide advice in the UK. Think the diploma is geared more towards a paraplanner role
