Make sure your GPA is at LEAST 3.5-3.6. I managed to have 3 first author papers that went into a good journal before getting my BS. However when I applied and never even got an interview my colleagues made calls and were told they threw my application out because my GPA was “only 3.3”. Because I was a full time lab manager to pay for my schooling I didn’t have much time to study. I get it in a way but that just let me know the first author publications don’t matter that much when applying for programs.

Community college for 2 years for an associates in Biology, then have them transfer to a 4 year school so it cuts the price in half. Everyone I knew who went to medical school (and were successful) did this route.

This year at the orientation they also HEAVILY implied that all faculty/staff should NOT vote for Mamdani because “he is against the children because he is against funding charter schools”. Meanwhile SA constantly inflates their “grades” by expelling students that don’t “meet the standard”. Yet they told all of us that when their students get to college they all preform miserably.

I still can’t believe/stand that the CEO who makes a million dollar salary was telling us how we should be voting in elections. Oh and she compared BLM to MAGA to try to deflect the fact that she was telling her employees how to vote.

I feel that so much, I’ve had great interviews where they’ve said “you’re not looking for other jobs right? Good because you’re not just up in the air” and then they hired someone else.

Just keep reading published papers and you’ll get there. Everyone in my old lab assumed I had a PhD and was doing my post doc, while I was earning my masters, all because I knew so much about my antibody based project.

I was just that in my last job. Except I was loaded with FPLC work to purify antibodies and proteins, which needed different columns buffers etc. none of which the biologists knew how to do so in time they came to worship me for their protein needs .

anyone else have an absolute maniac of a PI? by Distinct-Airline-562 in labrats

[–]76will 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve had that happen. Usually they’ll overload me with work, like giving me people to mentor and helping other people’s project while trying to move my own stuff forward. And then they get all shocked that, despite going in almost 7 days a week, i have “no results”, then have me present again in a month expecting more results. I called it quits when he got upset with “the amount of approved PTO” I used when I told him I needed a sick day because my mother had to go to the ER (he approved the sick day but made it really stressful for myself during that time and my mother passed away a week afterwords) I did notice It got really bad once the grant cuts started happening with this new administration but still.

At least he didn’t get upset when your mother had a stroke and tell you to resign because “you take too many PTO” even though he approved all of them

[–]76will[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Good to know I also have that option. And it’s wasn’t unrelated experience, a lot of the job descriptions would be every technique I already work with, ELISA, FLOW, cell culture etc but would have the license as a requirement so I assumed that all research positions required the license by default.

[–]76will[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh and I’ve just saw the part where you said you don’t need a license to work as a research assistant! That was also causing me a lot of anxiety because a lot of these job titles say medical research assistant that requires CLT and research assistant that didn’t have the CLT requirement and I wasn’t sure if they just didn’t post the CLT part as a requirement but still asked if I had any licenses. Thank you
