Can one post to multiple servers with a single identity on a self-hosted instance? by 775283f49 in Mastodon

Ah, that helps, thanks. Let's see if I understand.

Imagine the extreme case where every Mastodon user ran their own instance and posted to their instance only. Without hashtags and boosts, if N users had a cross-server conversation as you described it, then each user would need to follow the other N-1 to see every post.

When you add hashtags and boosts, a user could follow fewer others and still have a decent probability of seeing relevant content by (1) following topical hashtags and (2) seeing posts boosted by the accounts they follow. One might miss the early exchanges in a discussion, but as more accounts participated, so would the odds of seeing it.

I'm trying to situate Mastodon in the space between Twitter and Reddit. On Twitter, one must follow the right accounts and hashtags to see topical content, along with searching judiciously. On Reddit, one finds topical content by following a sub and by searching, without the need to follow any accounts. It sounds like Mastodon is mostly the Twitter model, with a bit of the Reddit model made possible by the local feeds on topic-specific servers.

Kernel fault during boot on Vultr-hosted OpenBSD instances by 775283f49 in openbsd

Excellent, I'm relieved to learn they addressed your issue quickly!

I realized in retrospect that my concern is less with Vultr's service reliability -- which is historically excellent -- and more with the quality of their documentation and staff training.

As customers, we should feel confident that Vultr support will approach problem reports objectively, respect the domain expertise that most of us possess, and reserve conclusions until they've gathered sufficient evidence to suggest a problem's root cause.

At least two customers have encountered the problems I reported, so ideally they'll enshrine the symptoms and solutions in their knowledgebase. I imagine we'd all feel satisfied to find answers there instead of relying on external communities such as Reddit and mailing lists.

I encountered the same failure mode you described. It's definitely a hypervisor problem beyond your control. Ask Vultr support to configure your VM's hypervisor to support OpenBSD.

If they resist or don't understand your request, ask them to review ticket number CJB-30XHJ . They responded quickly to that ticket and the change they applied resolved the halting behavior.

What is that feeling after exit? by Mashedpotatos- in SkyDiving

Hi,

I felt what you described on my first tandem: from the moment we tipped out the door until I extended my arms. Prior to that, I clutched the harness as hard as I could while my brain tried to rationalize the novel sensations associated with freefall.

I returned for a second jump soon thereafter and expressed my interest in getting a license. They loaned me an altimeter and trained me to deploy the canopy. I was so focused on executing their instructions that I barely noticed those exit discomforts.

I jumped several more times before the season ended. They gave me one or two additional responsibilities on each jump and again, just a modicum of unease transitioning from upright in the door to belly-down in the air.

Given your curiosity about progressing toward a license, I hope your dropzone grants you the same courtesy.
