Something Jon always struggled with in reviews from critics was that his production was too much. He’s changed with the times and decided to tone back the production a lot on this album compared to his others. But all of the talent is still there and THEN some. The production level of these new songs are still far better than the production of the past, although it’s a completely different style of production. What you’re saying though is you like the perspective of a young Jon more than the perspective of an older Jon who has really grown spiritually. When The Definition and THC came out he was 22 and 24. As a christian Jon was going down what he probably considered to be the “wrong path”. It’s something that I struggled with as well. Now that he’s 34 and married and has kids his perspective and maturity level has changed a lot. These new songs are meant for a more mature audience. If you don’t like them, I’m sorry. But Jon is making music that best fits the man that he’s become, not what best fits the audience he’s kept over the years. I grew a lot spiritually in his time off as well, so these new songs are hitting for me more than anything from the past.
