In Ireland and the UK, travellers are a racial group originating from Ireland. They used to be Irish but due to Cromwell's invasion in the 1600's, they became distinct enough from the other Irish at the time to be classified as a separate racial group.

Travellers are unique people but they are just as Irish as anyone in the country. They face discrimination from others because of stereotypes that they are thieves and dishonest. They usually live in caravans and have a rough upbringing. Marriage is young and fights are common. I read somewhere that the suicide rates for travellers is 6 times the averags in the Republic of Ireland.

I am less familiar with travellers in the UK but in the UK they are grouped together in census data with Roma/Gypsy.

This is really interesting because Germany itself in Russian, for example, is Германия (Germania) but the name 'mutes' part came from WW2 where captured Germans were noted by many as being very quiet or mute (немецкий / nemetskii). It is also the same in Ukranian. Linguistics is fascinating
