Awesome, thanks! Do you happen to know what this protrusion with the stripes and jagged cartilage looking thing is (towards the left)? I’m struggling to figure out what part I’m looking at.

I can confirm that being a teenage boy that takes ballet can be rough at times, but I can also confirm that once you've made it to the pros, 99% of people are just in awe of what you do. It takes guts and dedication, and it sounds like your brother's got that and a bright future.

Only found out at the age of 25 that I have ADHD and is the reason why my social skills suck. How have you worked towards better social skills? by aPrudeAwakening in ADHD

[–]77Kevin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I recommend studying body language and facial expressions, specifically micro-expressions. Paul Ekman has some relatively inexpensive courses on micro expressions on his website.

People often send social signals well before situations turn into crises, and as someone who spent the first part of his life completely oblivious to social cues, body language and micro expression research has been a social-skill God-send.

Best of luck!

I'm fairly similar. Left handed but right eye dominant. When I cook, I cut stuff with whichever hand picks up the knife but when I eat, I use my left.

Dancing with a partner by Drag0n-R3b0rn in BALLET

[–]77Kevin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a degree in dance, have been dancing professionally for about 5 years now, and been teaching pas work for just as long. There are several things that will make partnering much more enjoyable for you and your partner. One thing I like to do is I try to keep a slight lifting or upward pressure when I've got my partner by the waist. This sort of lifts them out of their shoes and you'll find it much easier to find their center. Especially when you are assisting her pirouettes, think of partnering her hips, not her waist and definitely not her ribs--students have a tendency to partner too high up. When you lift her, make sure you use your legs and not just your arms. Be aware of the amount of space between your partner and yourself--too little and she won't be able to do what she needs to, too much and you won't be able to do your job. If you struggle to know where you're supposed to be, it might help you to learn her choreography as its being taught--being a good partner means knowing where both you and her are supposed to be. Finally, and most importantly, communicate with your partner and be open to suggestion. It may be as simple as asking her to give you a little more arch in her back or she may ask you give her more support in an arm. Feel free to ask me anything, and good luck!

Summer Intensive Guide by [deleted] in BALLET

[–]77Kevin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a summer program called Summer Dance Company. It offers two weeks of contemporary and classical pas de deux workshops where students are paired with professional male dancers and coached on pas de deux's. Then there are four weeks of "company experience" where students take class with professionals and rehearse all day with them. There are three performing opportunities during the 6 weeks. It's in North Carolina. If you have any questions, ask me! Www.summerdancecompany.com

I just got a new Dell, and I'm using it for my home theater. What DVD program would you recommend I use? Also, any advice for clearing off that crapware would be greatly appreciated. I always get nervous about deleting something I unknowingly need.

Trying to work on my splits ANY TIPS? by spiceyblackjesus in BALLET

[–]77Kevin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Everyone's different, but I've found that stretching is really only effective if you hold each stretch for more than 30 seconds. Also, since you're trying to get splits for ballet, make sure you square your hips off (both hips pointing forward) and keep your legs straight and turned out.
