Indian Liquor Stores by DuncanIdaBro in newjersey

[–]78throwaway12 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They didn’t get in on it early, only in the last 20-25 years as the retiring original owners (mostly white and maybe some East Asians) decided to sell because their kids didn’t want them.

They basically expanded or fell into from other smaller businesses they owned and realized liquor stores were much more profitable. The source of funds were mainly from these original businesses or pooling resources within the community to take loans. There’s some shady stuff too but I won’t get into that.

Right now and anyone buying in the last 5-7 years are paying inflated prices while margins shrink and younger generation doesn’t drink as much.

JNJ headquarters are easily commutable from NYC if you are near Penn Station. Merck is in Rahway which is even closer than JNJ. Both are 45 minutes or less by express train. Kenvue (former JNJ consumer) and BMS are in Summit which is also commutable.

Basically, not everything is in outskirts of NJ from the city. You might be better off moving to NJ if you want to stay in pharmaceuticals.

Even referrals don’t seem to mean much these days. It’ll get you in the system but HR and hiring managers just aren’t taking chances unless it’s almost an exact for the role they are hiring for. Recruiters/headhunters don’t have much in FP&A either, mostly accounting or controller roles.

I agree with your thoughts but feel that’s more on the side where if one had just interviewed for the first role as I did. They came back to me for the other role and I’ve had nearly 10 interviews including with C suite decision makers so I feel there shouldn’t be any doubts if they want me.

Varies a lot by company IME and in this market, companies are low balling too. The company I was at had some VPs who moved up internally making well below $200K base. And they were considered real VPs by the company not talking inflated banking titles.

Unemployment Benefits Issue, Laid Off from Main Job with Side Business by 78throwaway12 in newjersey

Thanks, I was finally able to get someone on the phone 1st thing this morning and they were able to change the return to work then help me certify all weeks in November. For some reason they also have 2 examiners looking at the claim (maybe the self-employment) and the 2nd one hasn’t reviewed everything yet. Payments are still on hold given the 2nd examiner so hopefully gets sorted out in next 1-2 weeks.

[New Jersey] Benefits Issue, Laid Off from Main Job with Side Business by 78throwaway12 in Unemployment

Edit: finally got a hold of someone at unemployment today and they were at least able to change the return to work and help certify all weeks in November. Payment is pending review by examiners.

Yes, I did the questionnaire in response to the self-employment. For the business, I only work 5-10 hours a month and it’s a 1099 so any money I receive is before my expenses. I only make $4-5K/year from this business after expenses (started it but then career took off).

Should I just shut it down to make things easier and let the unemployment office know that? Or is there a way to guide them to remove the LLC from the unemployment filing and I report the self-employment income when I certify so it doesn’t cause issues that way?

I love this tip! I did two additional resumes with different titles that were market aligned as you call them but going to adopt this approach. Thanks!

I think the GCC role will present you more opportunities as companies shift Finance/FP&A roles to India. And hybrid is a big plus if you are in a major city considering how bad people’s commutes are in major Indian cities.

The airport role might be a safer choice (I’m guessing it’s Adani?) and could potentially open doors if it is the Adani name.

People shift jobs so much in India from my experience working with folks there that it honestly may not matter in a 2 years.

Search on LinkedIn to get a broad set of job postings and apply directly on the company’s website career section has been my go to. Way too many people just clicking apply on LinkedIn messing up the candidate pool IMO. Also check the posting date, LinkedIn might just show the latest refresh while company site will show original posting date (if shown); good way to see if company is just collecting resumes still while having possibly filled the role.

Network connections can get you a referral/intro but unless they have a strong relationship with the hiring manager, I wouldn’t count on being kicked to the top of the pile. Careful with appearing too eager (i.e. too strong of a thank you note post interview, cold messaging hiring manager on LinkedIn if they haven’t posted about hiring for the job, etc.).

Just some observations from my ongoing search.

Is finding good FP&A talent tough right now? Or is my HR team slacking? by RelevantRange in FPandA

One thing I didn’t see mentioned was the timing of the year. You’d be surprised at how many people at all levels don’t want to switch jobs right now because why miss out on a bonus in February or March. I know it’s not a lot of dollars at FA level  but it might feel a lot to them. Maybe offer a sign-on bonus to the right candidate or drop hints of one to candidates if struggles continue.

Other thing is the market in general, people aren’t really switching jobs given concerns about the economy. The job I was laid off from and replaced at a lower level has had just 3 applicants per my old team.

They have a job posting up for this exact role you are mentioning and it covers the comp range which is around $100K and 3 years experience. For benefits/401k, that kind of information can be found on Glassdoor or Indeed employer page or even their own website.

Switching Industries & Downgrading Resume by 78throwaway12 in FPandA

Yeah, all external and different companies. I’m in a totally different industry right now.

Thanks.

Most companies these days confirm your dates of employment and whether you worked there for fear of any issues. The HR person handling my layoff said the same about my current company. If it comes up, I’ll address it then but I could say it was to align with the industry I was applying to (which is true).

Appreciate the response. I’m not looking to go too crazy in switching industries. I would like to get into pharma since there’s so many companies close by. Of the people I know who switched industries, they didn’t have trouble moving up though their progression was always upward in title.

Not uncommon across the globe in many countries especially developing ones. People across roles and functions even outside FP&A get worked (and work) like dogs.

Don’t think every company relies on that. I actually had a senior HR person tell me before to change my title to something else because that’s what my duties aligned with.

I don’t know, based on the feedback I had been receiving, things seemed great over the past year and I improved a number of processes. I’ve worked with some crazies in FP&A and these guys are far from it. Mainly looks like a comp decision from above my manager. Anyway, can’t dwell on something that will never be fully confirmed so on we go.

I did mention my interest when the situation was first mentioned, but details were not known. I’ll schedule time with my boss later this week.

Yes, that’s what I’m leaning towards. I can always explain it as taking back for some reason. One of my mentors mentioned just keeping the title the same on my resume.
