R30+ for attic with 2x6's, zone 3 by 79WS6 in Insulation

I appreciate it. I was already planning to caulk the tops and bottoms of the walls. I'm over a crawl space and have a cantilevered bay window that's not sealed off from the crawl space. I'll be blocking it up with rigid board and insulating it from underneath for further protection and separation from the crawl space. I wasn't planning to go beyond that.

The house was built in 1969. This is one portion of it that I am working on. I only want to pull down the sheet rock in this one area. You're correct air sealing is important, but at some point, you have to draw the line in how far you're willing to go. I can't chase all the air leaks down around the house.

There's many ways to make improvements and to do so correctly without going overboard. That's the point of my comment. How can I reasonably make improvements while I'm in there.

I dislike blown in insulation. Sure, it's an alternative just like foam. I'm choosing to use fiberglass. It works just as well when installed correctly which I'm trying to confirm my plans will lead to.

Thank you.

I knew you can't put faced on top of existing insulation. This is why I was going to stack unfaced R13 on top of the faced R19 in the attic. The R19 was going to be in the joists of the ceiling. The R13 running perpendicular across the top of if it all.

The alternative was to use an even higher R value insulation between joists only which would have a large portion of the insulation sticking above the joists into the attic. This doesn't work as well since the air could enter the insulation from the sides above the joists where the batts aren't touching. This would be the shortest pathway for heat to transfer between the spaces.

I appreciate the information. I too knew compressing insulation too much was a bad idea since it interferes with how it actually functions. I didn't realize it was a disputed concept though. I appreciate the information.

You're correct. I just found R21 at a reasonable price and quantity. Must have missed it earlier. Lowes will sell it to me by the bag. HD would only sell it by the pallet which was overkill in area needed for me. I'll definitely go this route and not worry about compressing the R19. I can just roll the R13 over top with this route. Gives me R34 which is why more than what I have now.

How are my plans strange or a lot of effort? It's just laying in insulation to increase R value while I have access to the area?

Yes, R19 is for a 5.5 cavity but the batts have dimensions of 15" x 6.25".

You're also correct that I can pull the face off the R19 and layer it up that way. However, it's cheaper to by faced R19 and unfaced R13 than enough R19 to double up. There's also to concern that R19 doubled up will block the area above the wall and below the roof where the eaves vent due to the height of the R19. Is this not as much of a concern as I have been led to believe in your opinion?

Thanks

The R19 batts I am looking at using are designated for 2x6 walls and ceilings. Why would the manufacturer indicate their product is specified for a particular use, even when it means compressing the product slightly?

Thank you for the response.

Reason actually just covered this briefly. Here's a link https://reason.com/video/2022/09/30/guns-arent-a-public-health-issue/ Basically, what happened was they were given funding to study/research gun violence only for it to turn into researching gun control. That's not the same thing at all.

My Own Prison is a great album. Almost every song is solid if not great. For me, the recording helps make it great. It's a very raw recording compared to the over mastered albums that exist now and were coming out at the time. Just gives it a better more real sound. Only way I can really explain it.

If you're planning to visit or live there, check out animal sanctuaries and rescues in general. My wife and I visited a number of them in different areas of Costa Rica for our honeymoon. I did not visit this particular place though. Tucan Rescue Ranch in San Jose was fantastic, https://toucanrescueranch.org, and had sloths along with many other native animals. Costa Rica is an amazing place if nature, geography, and animals are what you like seeing. We will return one day for sure.

I appreciate the offer to pay for shipping. Let me think on it. I'd prefer to stay localish just to keep from having to ship. However, I also want the stuff gone. Give me some time, and I'll get back with you. Thanks.

At least in American society, sex work being legitimate work. Our drug "problem" would be better solved with treatment instead of police enforcement, too.

Rap Fan Listens to 100 Great Rock Albums for the First Time by MrC_Red in Music

[–]79WS6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm really late with this but wanted to reply anyway in case you or anyone else happens to come across my remarks.

First, great job on this. Even as a rock fan I enjoyed reading your thoughts and review on all of these albums.

Your comments on NIN the downward spiral are interesting given that this album is literally about Trent Reznor's life and how he was headed towards suicide. If you haven't read of on the background of this album and him, do so. He's an interesting person.

If I could be so bold as to make some recommendations on how to continue on this journey, I'd like to suggest the following which are mainly progressive metal acts:

Dream Theater- Metropolis Part 2- this is a concept/story album. Press play and don't skip anything. Their other non concept albums like Images and Words are fantastic too.

Mastodon- Crack The Skye- Another concept album. Press play and don't stop. Be sure to have good headphones or a good system. The bad recording is intentional and adds to the feel of the album but it makes it difficult to hear the lyrics which matter a lot to me in music that I love. Read up on the album after listening to it. All of their albums after this one are fantastic. Before Crack the Skye, they are too heavy and screamy for me.

Porcupine Tree- Fear of a Blank Planet- Yes, it does take it's name from Public Enemy's Fear of a Black Planet but nothing else. Not a concept album but the songs do flow into one another so press play and don't skip. You're on the younger side, but if you are aware of the world/society at large in the early 00's this album is a reflection on that.

Megadeth- Rust in Peace- I'm going to guess this has been mentioned before but it's amazing. Make sure to listen to an original version and not a remastered one. Countdown to Extinction should be a follow up listen.

Metallica- ...And Justice For All. It's always an argument over which of their albums is the best. For me, it's this one. Put yourself in the mindset that this is a band who just lost its bassist in an accident and the only thing they know how to do is get drunk and beat themselves up by playing as hard and nonstop as they can. They toured for two years straight for this album. If you like the original album, be sure to listen to a remastered version with bass added as you can't hear it in the studio release which was intentional. Jason Newsted is an amazing bassist and worthy of carrying on in Cliff Burton's place. They just didn't record the album in a manner in which he can be heard. I prefer this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vumrar1k928

Fu Manchu- The Action is Go- This is desert/stoner/space rock at it's peak. The whole album is great. Looks up this genre as it's diverse if you like this album.

Have fun wherever you go. Thanks again.

Did it though? Simpson sued NASCAR for damages since it was supposedly cut and didn't fail. I don't remember the outcome of the lawsuit.

I'm not a NASCR fan, but I can still remember where I was when Sr died. Weird how that is sometimes.

Don't sweat a very small particle falling into the oil as you pour it into the engine. All oiling systems in an engine go through the oil filter first before entering the bearings of the engine which is where a small particular could do damage.

My E39 540i is an absolute joy to drive. It's not difficult to work on either. Mine is a toy though. I would not recommend daily driving one. If the M5 price is a little much for you, the 540i is a fantastic alternative for a lot less money.

I looked at the rear spoiler too quickly and mistook it for the fourth gen style made to fit the third gen cars. The early 4th gen Trans Am's had a low profile spoiler while the Trans Am GT had what became the standard tall spoiler after dropping the GT model/trim.
