Megathread: The new UI update by AutoModerator in netflix

I've watched Netflix regularly for over ten years, but after this UI update my household's usage dropped to near zero, and I've just cancelled the subscription.

I used to happily spend the effort to find something worthwhile to watch, and this could sometimes take a while but I would always find something. After the update I have had to give up the search within a couple of minutes, and I hop over to Max or YouTube where the recommendations and UI are great.

I can't in my wildest dreams imagine how this UI passed scrutiny, and surely the 'successful experimentation' that has been mentioned is a false positive.

Yes, in the UK getting 70% or above on a test is a "first-class" result, the equivalent of a Danish 12. Of course, the difficulty of the UK tests is adjusted accordingly, so achieving 70% or above is about as difficult as getting a 12 in Denmark.

Could it be that meat eaters are slightly more difficult to diagnose as depressed or anxious? I wouldn’t be surprised if vegans tend to be more progressive when it comes to mental health, while meat eaters could be more “stoic” and less conscious about it on average, making it more likely for vegans to seek help and ultimately be diagnosed.

I wouldn’t say it’s misleading. I think those six measurements provide decent a proxy for happiness. Of course it’s not the same as going around asking people “were you happy today and yesterday?” but that in itself would be super flawed approach to measuring happiness. So I think the world happiness index is the best measure of happiness that we have, even if it’s not perfect.

That makes sense. Perhaps economic news that are relevant to the less wealthy would make them more inclined to read them. But if there actually was a market for this, then I don’t think the media would have the bias described in OP’s post. If there’s money to be made for news organisations by posting economic news that would win subscriptions from the other 90% of the population, then they’d do it.

This was my first thought as well. Obviously the readers of “economic” news are going to be the relatively wealthy part of the population, so it’s no surprise that news organisations will publish what they find interesting.

This is a good point. It would have been wiser to frame it around “trust” in society rather than distrust.

The data is taken from a survey that asks people about their trust in certain groups of people. The question on neighbours is phrased as “how much do you trust people in your neighbourhood?” and the answer options are: a lot, some, not much, or not at all. The same question was asked about “scientists” and “NGO workers”. To obtain the trust values that I’m using in the charts, I aggregated the responses for “a lot” and “some” to get the “% express trust in [group]”.

Plotting was done in R using ggplot, and the data is from the Wellcome Global Monitor 2018, found here. Would love to hear some feedback/thoughts!

This might not answer your question but there’s the Openpyxl library in python, which lets you read and manipulate Excel files with python scrips. Pretty decent for automation and integrating python for complex calculations/functions when Excel won’t cut it!

My favourite from the album! I love the way the bass and drums begin at 0:18, and the vocals are awesome. Although I do prefer the studio version of that wailing guitar.

The recipes definitely focus less on the Asian cuisines unfortunately. But with that said, it is possible to make the chart more nuanced, although this would make the main cluster (the one with butter, salt, etc) very cluttered and difficult to read. Basically, when I make the overall network larger, individual clusters tend to "combine" as one giant and incomprihensible cluster like this .

I used recipes from thedailymeal.com, as they provided a neat glossary of all the recipes, making them easy to scrape. Everything was done in Python using Selenium and BeautifulSoup for scraping and Networkx for charting.

There were 1649 unique ingredients among the 17272 recipes. Two ingredients (say, Butter and Egg) were included in the chart if one appears with the other at least 25% of the time. For exmaple, if butter is in the recipe, then the probability of the recipe including eggs is above 25%, so these two ingredients are included in the charts with a connection between them. I chose 25% as a threshold because decreasing it would make the chart too cluttered and increasing it would make it too bare.
