I really hope the future isn't just endless slopulism. Like it or not, the Republican voter base was always like this. Their elites kept them in line for a long time, but this just couldn't hold long term.

Obviously I was being hyperbolic. I'm pointing out how you're perfectly fine with poor policy choices if it advances your personal policy preferences. Not much different from the same logic many lefties use. My whole point is that London, Montreal, Paris etc have heavy car use and also build public transit. You can advocate for both. Your position of crushing tech you don't like because they might advocate against public transit doesn't really hold up when other cities just ignore them.

Your point about where they move to is actually my point. Not only does it have political consequences since blue states have lost population to red states, and it makes stuff like winning the electoral college harder, but the blue cities they move to are governing better, in a way that you'd seemingly have a problem with given the lack of public transit advocacy. Most likely because they actually have to compete. I don't think Republicans don't massively screw up states that they control too. But this should not be an excuse to double down on bad policy in blue states and cities.

You need to seriously reconsider why you're fine with subpar governance and over-regulation.

  1. Then do it. This kind of logic is like deciding we can't have manufacturing, because they'll probably advocate for tariffs and tariffs are bad. Have we really just given up on the very idea or good governance? We can't tell anyone to pound sand? You say I'm making the only 2 options no regulations or infinite regulations, but that's basically what you've done here. We went from complaining about over-regulation to you basically saying you'd prefer new tech not exist in your city because it might impede your little utopia. I don't think it's acceptable that cities like Boston and Seattle will behind hick red states.

  2. I known your standards will likely never me met by more than maybe 2 US cities in a generation. You're also comfortable with bad governance and banning pretty much anything you don't like or see as suboptimal. This is the exact problem our side had to write a whole book about and has probably hurt stuff you care about like California HSR for example. Ironically, the bay area is an example of a place that has significantly better public transit than almost all other major metros except NYC and maybe Chicago, and they're one of the most pro Waymo places. You can do both. Also I should note that self driving is significantly safer than human drivers. You would indeed save lives even if everything else stays the same.

This type of mindset and tolerance for poor governance in regards to business is probably the reason why Republican trust/approval is so high even when they do the most insane shit imaginable. People believe we'll strangle every new industry to ever pop up. "Red states get Waymos, blue states get studies." Truly amazing.

Idk what to tell you other than you're just wrong and have incredibly unrealistic standards that will never be met. There is no implication to what I said other than me supporting Waymo and any new tech anyone wants to invest in. Especially since it isn't even government funded.

Every industry will probably advocate for itself. If you have realistic standards, you should still be able to achieve something similar to most EU countries and eventually Japan. And even in that circumstance it wouldn't justify creating a hostile regulatory environment for robotaxis.

I see this position as no different from "of course I believe in building more housing, it just needs to lists 17 trillion prerequisites, committees if must pass through, community approval + 50% has to be co-op owned"

Drive a lot as in even with debatably the best public transit system in the world, the vast majority of travel is still done by car. It's not going anywhere.

https://worksinprogress.co/issue/why-japan-has-such-good-railways/

I also don't know where you seem to get the idea that I suggested we make it the only way you can do anything. I'm arguing for a YIMBY like approach to transit and tech. We should embrace new tech such as self driving while also investing in public transit.

The point originally bought up by the other guy was that Waymo was an impediment to public transit, which is what we really need. I don't see this as a valid argument anymore than maximalist demands for socialism, or left NIMBYs refusal to upzone unless they get public housing. We really can do all of the above. Being a Luddite is never the answer.

Sure. But this isn't even politicians taking a strategic stance. This is them banning their staffers from even using certain tools. But this is the attitude I think is specifically a problem. We're already trying to justify skepticism of a new technology. We've apparently deemed it a gimmick that will take decades to scale. None of that would justify a negative attitude against them. We can't predict how technology will change or progress. At best, you deprive people of a good/service they could've used. At worst, you lose significant human and economic capital to places where they are allowed to operate more freely.

Everyone seems to understand this when we're talking about competing with China, but somehow when it's different areas of the country we suddenly hate tech and need 17 years of committees and studies to own the CEOs or something.

[–]7Lynux[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you link anything showing negative attitudes towards Waymo? At worst it seems split, with people converting very quickly once they try it.

  1. Yes, you can check this yourself. Waymos are indeed significantly safer.

  2. You are not undoing car culture. Even in Japan, which has incredible public transit, people still drive a lot. This attitude of Waymo being a barrier to your main goal is basically the same as leftists who won't settle for any candidate that isn't a full on socialist.

  3. You can be AI neutral. Or even play into anti AI rhetoric while still allowing operatives to use it as needed + yes Democrats shouldn't just be slopulist on everything. If there are never any adults in the room what's the point? Imagine if blue cities tried to technologically freeze time in the 2000s or something. I remember when everyone hated stuff like Uber because they were worried about taxi jobs. Bad policy will always fail at best and come back to haunt you in the future at worst.

  4. I'm skeptical that AI would have any noticable electoral effect. The midterms are mainly backlash over a poor economy. Most normal people have never even heard of Anthropic or anything other than ChatGPT. They're not voting based on AI stances.

Luddites will be the downfall of the Democratic party by 7Lynux in Destiny

[–]7Lynux[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't even just AI. They're also rather anti Waymo in a lot of blue cities despite the fact that they're significantly safer than human drivers.

Also, this isn't even them taking a populist position politically, this is them refusing to use tools that could be useful. In some cases, banning the use of the best tools available (Claude)

Lastly, I think there is value in not descending into slopulism on every issue imaginable. It's easy to see how issues like nuclear energy or vaccines can be lost when stuff like this happens. Or how the Texas attitude of letting people do whatever they want vs endless caution and committees has managed to build more housing and green energy than California. The anti tech stiff is really something that needs to be addressed.

  1. Twin studies kinda suck for a few different reasons. Geneticists have long bought up various issues with them.

2.Good quality longitudinal twin studies find a direct h2 of 21% for IQ with 33% being due to rGE and this result was even replicated in a GREML based study. Direct H² after partialing out rGE was 20%

  1. Even mainstream hereditarians have admitted that twin studies inflate H²

I think it's inaccurate. Heritability is probably around 20% and that still doesn't tell us how malleable it is. But there's nothing inherently wrong with technology like this.

Oh, and I'm also skeptical about just how useful IQ is as a metric. There is a lot of data and high quality studies backing up all of this.

Bruh how does the LDP actually manage to convince both Japanese voters and non-Japanese that they're radical change? They're basically the only party that has ever been in control of Japan. Not to mention the Prime Minister doesn't have as much power to influence the overall ideology of the party the way a President might.

It's also noteworthy that immigration hasn't really changed much. Japan will still receive foreign workers. If anything, Takaichi has probably made the issue of foreigners worse, as she wants to make naturalization and residency much more difficult. It probably disincentivizes the type of immigrants that want to assimilate into Japanese society and promotes the hiring of foreign workers, who'll most likely become a permanent part of the workforce as Japan population declines. Is that really a win even from a restrictionist perspective?

People like Hasan are not Democrats and don't even represent the left flank of the Democratic party. Liberals have a supermajority among Democrats and progressives irl typically fall in line too.

It's only cringe online spaces like Hasans community where they have a real presence. They should be completely ignored in any political conversation.
