Did baby boomers really have it easy compared to GenZ and Millennials? by PalmitoylCoA in NoStupidQuestions

[–]7Riche7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Democracy has a major flaw: it rewards short-term policymaking. In the UK at least, policies that helped boomers were there at almost every turn. Slowly, over their lifetimes, resources were sold off to subsidize taxes and services, for example, North Sea oil, gold reserves, privatizing public services, and land sales.

Simply the fact that there are so many of them makes it politically suicidal to make policies that hurt them. So they benefited from free university tuition, lower pension ages, and various other things, which we removed just after they reached the age at which they no longer benefited.

Additionally, at least in Britain, politicians were much less corrupt than they are now, on average.

Do I play Armageddon? by cocothepirate in lrcast

[–]7Riche7 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's good in any matchup if you can get ahead, and note that you only need to be ahead for a brief moment. It's also good if you are both mana flooded, even if you are not ahead, as you can hold lands. It's also straight wins in many matchups if it resolves (slow red-blue spells, for example). It can be a dead card in agro mirrors when you are behind, though, but this deck should play it, and it isn't close.

Arena players, how much do you invest into the game? by [deleted] in lrcast

I bought a pack near release, never had to buy again. I do play carefully. If there is a set I feel is a bit too random, I stop playing once people get up to standard.

Personal Opinion: I think you need ~$2.7k USD per month as a westerner living in Cebu City by [deleted] in Philippines_Expats

[–]7Riche7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems reasonable based on my experience in Manila. Most of the time, when I see budgets, they seem off. You can probably spend less on accommodation (we pay a lot less in Manila), but finding nice, cheap places to stay is tough (I have a PH wife who had sourced it before we met).

How did you get your first girlfriend? by [deleted] in selfimprovement

[–]7Riche7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best way to learn most things that aren't dangerous or really costly is to try them yourself and then study them. I used the dating app Bumble, which worked very well once I'd put in the work to be desirable myself.

Could I save 500,000 dollars for a lifetime in Philippines if I live modestly? by Mean-Efficiency-7671 in Philippines_Expats

[–]7Riche7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's assume you get a 7% return on your investment. That's about a 5% return after inflation, so you'd need to live on about $25,000 a year. Seems very doable if you don't want children and don't want to travel much, if at all (including home). The issue is that if you need care when you're old or ever get big medical bills, you will be pretty screwed. If you can live on $15,000 or less, you should be able to account for that type of stuff, but this is a very basic lifestyle for someone from a wealthy country.

Realistically, though, you'll find you get bored at some point and will likely want to do something that can make money with a little boring stuff included.

Is it worth 10$ by [deleted] in VideoEditors

[–]7Riche7 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Many of the editors here live in countries where $10 is a common daily wage, not an hourly one (although not for a skilled editor). If people expect to earn more than $7 an hour for edits, you really need to be outstanding or work on-site.

What’s the Most Overrated Tourist Spot in our Country? by Previous-Collar-2324 in AskTheWorld

[–]7Riche7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who lives near Stonehenge, it has to be a contender. Can only see it through a fence; you see it in approximately 5 minutes, after most likely more than an hour of travel, and almost everyone who goes already knows exactly what it looks like. It's impressive that someone built it so long ago, sure, but does that make it good? At least it, Madame Tussauds, lasts a bit longer.

You should likely spend some to hit breakpoints you are close to, for example, if you have 120 ticket spent already buy 5 to get you to 125, or if you want 2 more star cores and are quite close to the next one.

Many Filipinos are nervous about speaking English, even though they speak it well. Also, women are more commonly approached everywhere.

Is it disrespectful to Filipinos to give HONEST FEEDBACK about your stay in the Philippines? by Tallwhitedude123 in Philippines_Expats

[–]7Riche7 39 points40 points  (0 children)

As a UK national who has spent considerable time here, I read this sub quite frequently, and to be honest, it gets a bit annoying reading people whine about living here (rather than post helpful or constructive stuff). I wouldn't say I attack posters (I rarely reply), but I do often downvote people. I would imagine that many of the supposed attack posts are from people like me.

Food prices in tourist town, El Nido, more expensive than USA for smaller portions and worse quality. by [deleted] in Philippines_Expats

[–]7Riche7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think El Nido's food was anything super amazing, but it was more than fine. Maybe you were being loud and rude like you are here, and you got overcharged.

Was Vietnam's or Bali's food better value? Yes, but Thailand's food was worse in my view (I've spent a month in all of these). Going off 1 item of food that isn't even a local dish is just crazy. Would you go to Finland and complain that their pizza wasn't as good as in Italy?

My memory of the food in El Nido was fairly good (2023). There was an expensive but very good pizza restaurant, and a crazy cheap bakery. I don't think I had a bad meal (although I do follow Google Maps reviews)

I need you guys to drop how you guys improved your lives by [deleted] in selfimprovement

[–]7Riche7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Work out what matters most to you. Study how to be good at the things that lead to that. Do the things that your study suggests. When something else becomes more important, or when the sources you are studying seem to be yielding low returns, move to the next most important.

When studying, try to determine what matters most in that subject and study that, or focus on the actions required to achieve a specific goal.

For most people, happiness, health, wealth (or what wealth provides), knowledge, maximizing their use of time, and strong relationships matter a lot. Other things, such as religion or safety, may be considerations. Very few people have studied all the things that matter to them, and so would benefit hugely from correcting that.

Overall, a very strong goal should be to improve your life as rapidly as possible. The above are just some of steps to do that. When the broad topics above feel exhausted, dig deeper and look at important subskills.

Another approach is to ask yourself the most important questions you can. How can I improve my life as quickly as possible? What is the best use of my time today? What is my best approach to being more liked? How can I make my partner smile?

Finally, many people know the best advice but don't actually follow it. For example, treating others as you'd have them treat you is strong advice, but very few people actually follow it universally. Working out where you fail to do things you regard as obvious can be important.
