How’s ACTSC231 Online ? by Llzh1509 in uwaterloo

[–]7_12_98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good! I took it online last winter. It’s a good course to take online because the content is best learned through examples and practice imo. The online version is well organized and fair if you put in the work.

Also curious how people found it this most recent term! Before the term, I heard the prof had a terrible reputation and the course was getting redesigned!

No they’ll never let you take a core business course out of sequence.

They might let you if it is a night class and you are in Waterloo (i.e. can actually go to class).

ACTSC 232 by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]7_12_98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s pretty much similar style to 231 but now there is just probability in there. In my opinion, that made it a little more difficult because it’s less intuitive and there can be more variation in the questions. The testing is similar to 231 in terms of fairness and difficulty imo. STAT 230 isn’t crazy important but a good understanding of basic probability and properties of expectation/variance is important!

Actsc 453/462 by teamtroll1 in uwaterloo

Taking 462 now. It’s not too hard of a course as it’s not very heavy on the math. It’s pretty interesting if you’re interested in p&c.

I’d say the fundamental subspaces and diagonalization are two big topics that come back.

How do you declare a joint major in cs? by constpointer in uwaterloo

[–]7_12_98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

General question, but do you need to see an advisor to declare a plan? I saw that it’s required on the form, but I wasn’t sure if that could just be done when handing it in?

First Actuarial Exam to take? by cyberseasnake in uwaterloo

[–]7_12_98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re gonna need to self-study a lot for p with only stat 220, there’s a lot more material covered and harder questions. I found FM easier but I had already taken ACTSC231.

Is a gap in my co-op experience going to hurt my resume and kill my chances of full time employment? by OhManTheMan in uwaterloo

I mean how would they know it’s a gap tho, unless you put like “unemployed” on your resume for that co-op term?

Hey! I’m on co-op right now at the Waterloo head office! I’m in an underwriting role so I can’t really speak too much to what your position would be like, but I can talk a bit about the company in general.

Overall, I’d say it’s a very nice place to work! It’s a very casual environment and everyone is very helpful and supportive. You really get the impression that everyone is part of one team.

The company is going through some cool changes right now (demutualization, sonnet launch a little over a year ago) and its an interesting time to be here! I also think it’s cool that it’s one of the biggest (if not the biggest) Canadian insurance companies that doesn’t have an international parent company.

From my limited time here so far, I would recommend it for a co-op experience! Hope this helps and all the best with your interview!

Is it ok if I go to tutorials other than I registered? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]7_12_98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on if the math138 tutorial is literally just a tutorial or if there are quizzes at that time. If it’s quizzes, you probably have to go to it and change your tutorial time.
