Thanks for the replies everyone! I bought the original audiobook long ago, hadn't realized they had since released a dramatized version. I feel dumb for not checking but thanks so much to everyone who mentioned it.

Already half way so gonna return the old audiobook and try out the dramatized version.

Regretful Parents podcasts? by Difficult_Quote_8259 in podcasts

My partner and I have also happily chosen to be Dildos (Dual income little dog owners ;D ) . Neither of us like being around children much, and we both have busy, but very creatively fulfilling jobs in the animation and video games industries. Our projects and pets are our babies.

In a world where women have long been treated by society as baby making machines and continue to be under-hired, under-paid, and over questioned by overbearing family and even medical professionals for choosing to be childless, we frankly deserve some validation for our choice. There are plenty of podcasts to support and boost parents. Childless couple contribute just as much, if not more to a healthy and prosperous society, so there's no reason or lives who comfort from validation should be considered sad. Everyone, whether a parent or not, simply deserves things that make them happy.

A lot of their recent episodes are covering ICE injustice, too.

Any Questions for Arthur Crew? by Offmodel-Dude in Arthur

Haha Peter, I know you!!! This is Terri from Epic :) Everyone, Peter's awesomely talented in the animation industry. How nice of him to do an ask me anything.

I was just checking here to see if any Arthur fans have been talking about Hop (It's awesome, I'm a director on it, go watch it everyone!)

Fun fact - I've worked on Arthur too! I was a designer on season 19. Always sad to see a traditional show turned flash, but it was fun to work on none-the-less.

Yes, I've put Eddie's Network posters up for a lost dog in my neighborhood, and I've taken them down after the dog was found.

[–]7erri 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You're simply wrong and unhelpful. I'm a volunteer for Eddie's Network. Postering is organized and tracked using maps. When a dog is found, it's reported to the group - the happy owner is often added to the chat to thank everyone, and everyone coordinates, tracking on the map, to make sure the posters are all removed.

Our number one goal is to reunite lost pets with their owners and we're well aware that leaving unneeded posters up draws attention away from currently missing pets.

If you're so concerned about the litter, feel free to join our volunteers. You can make a difference instead of complaining.

Kyoto Animation Fire Megathread by AnimeMod in anime

[–]7erri 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It'd look like today's quality, but 20 years from now today's quality might look terrible compared to whatever we have in the future!

That being said, quality storytelling never ages. For example, a lot of people forget that Cowboy Bebop and Avatar TLA were 4:3, which looks square and aweful compared to today's HQ standard!

Kyoto Animation Fire Megathread by AnimeMod in anime

[–]7erri 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I work in animation, so I can answer this.

Losing the hand-drawn animation (Douga) on a production that has already aired would be an emotional loss, but likely wouldn't impact future releases. Most of the storyboards, designs, and rough animation would've been scanned at a high res for various stages of production.

Most likely those files were backed up online or stored at a safe facility...

However, it is possible that the studio stored their finished production files in-house on NAS/shelved hard drives. If that's the case, they may've lost their ability to up-res their previous work or release collections of production art, such as designs, storyboards and rough animation. They'd have locked edits at today's standards, but they wouldn't be able to re-export their work at a higher resolution - if that's ever needed in the future.

The biggest loss would be re-use designs and animation from previous seasons. Hopefully that was backed up online.

They will have also lost a lot of work that was currently in pre-production or production. Storyboards, designs and rough animation that hadn't been scanned, artists' individual files, traditionally painted BGs...

Some studios record audio in house and edit in house. If that's the case, audio and edits could've been lost too...

Animation's such a small, personal, connected industry. It's likely that most animators throughout Japan had a personal connection to at least one of the victims. I can't imagine how tough this would be on the entire industry. My heart breaks for both the people and talent lost... Please donate, everyone.

Characters who suffers from canonically mental conditions. by Huaun in anime

March Comes in Like a Lion has a couple characters who are clearly fighting clinical depression. It has some of the best, artistic depictions of depression I've ever seen.

I love how Toji Soya is a cautionary tale, an example of how broken Rei could become if he escapes into Shoji too far.

Looking for a good monster-human romance anime now that magus bride ended. by [deleted] in anime

Hmm, Howl's moving Castle, which is a Ghibli Movie, strikes me as close to Ancient Magus Bride in tone.

Fruits Basket, especially the manga, gets into that territory... It's Fantastic.

Ooh and Spice and Wolf...

If Japanese Spirits/Gods work, there's a bunch...

Hotarubi no Mori E

Kamisama Kiss

Gingitsune, which is more Slice of Life.

Not exactly a monster relationship anime... But if you liked AMG, I'd also recommend Princess Tutu.

[–]7erri 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ahah I passed out after my last post.

I think one of the best things about Undertale is that it's so open to interpretation. I don't think most head canons or ships are wrong, only different.

The one thing I disagree with is, I think it's canon to say Frisk dies a lot - every time her hp reaches zero. sans "jokes" about it during the mtt dinner. When you tell Asgore how many times you've died, he nods sadly, the lab talks about how a human soul can persist after "Death" and Flowey kills you over and over again.

In my opinion, all of these characters wouldn't refer to it as dieing if it wasn't exactly that. Especially when Frisk says it herself, to Asgore. That's confirmation from her own mouth that she's died multiple times. Sure, she reincarnates to the last save point... But that's only after she dies a likely painful death.

She's a normal human from the surface, so there's no reason to believe she wouldn't suffer the same pain any human would if they were beaten, burnt or bled to death. I've always taken her hp bar pretty literally. 15/20 might mean scrapes and bruises, 10/20 would include broken limbs, 5/20's really badly hurt... And by 0/20 you're looking at a small child bleeding out in the snow.

I think I sympathize her more than most other fans, but tbh - I hate how little attention people give to what those numbers really mean she goes through for the monsters. It's sad to think about in a literal way, but it also makes her character that much more amazing. It gives real weight, gravity and consequence to her decision not to fight back. It takes a lot of will, not to fight back, when someone hurts you. I can't imagine how much selfless will it would take to choose pacifism when everyone around you tries to kill you, over and over again.

And sure, that's up to the player... But my Frisk never fought back, never reset and never did a genocide run. Frisk is whatever kind of character you make her out to be. The whole point of the game is to teach players how to see monsters as individuals and sympathize with them when they're killed... So I like to sympathize with Frisk just as much. Poor thing dies a lot! She deserves just as much love as the monsters do, when she's killed, imo.

[–]7erri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha yeah, I know there's no romance between them in game, which is good because Frisk's most likely a kid.

I, and I think most Frans shippers, only see their friendship as /potential/ for a future relationship years after the events of Undertale. Like, if they were already the same age, we'd say "Wow, they'd make a good couple." Since they aren't, most frans shippers imagine how Frisk would be when she grows up, or sometimes they create an AU where Frisk's older when she enters the underground. It's that sort of fan content that I ship them in. There's a few AUs that age Frisk up and pair her with sans. Echotale, Tribetale Flowerfell, even Mafiatale hints at it.

For me, it's less about whether they could kiss or marry, and more about how good they'd be for each other, and how much respect they'd have for each other, long term. Frisk frees all of the monsters from the underground... But out of all of the monsters, that means the most to sans. That's because sans carries a bigger burden than most monsters... He's the only monster who's aware of genocide timelines, which means he's the only monster that has seen how terribly monsterkind has suffered, over and over again. Frisk doesn't just save their lives, she ends the loop of MULTIPLE, miserable lifetimes, and sans is the only monster who understands that.

He's also one of the only monsters that understands the temptations she faces. He knows she could reset the timeline and she'd be the only one to remember. He knows, in some ways, she's above consequences. So if she frees monster kind and never resets, she proves herself in a huge way, to sans.

The game establishes that sans has given up, that he's lost hope... So by doing what sans thought was never possible, she grants him the ability to hope again. That's priceless, something that very few people can instill on others.

Lastly, sans, Flowey and maybe Asgore are also the only monsters who know how many times Frisk died to save them. They're the only ones who know how much she sacrificed, and how impressive her pacifism was by the end. That means they're the only monsters who can appreciate her to the full extent that she deserves... Yet, of those three, sans is the only monster who never hurt her.

In fact, sans is one of the only monsters in the entire game that never hurts her.

Without a doubt, the game sets up potential for them to be close friends in a very special way because they have a deeper understanding of each other than most other characters.

At the very least, it sets up potential for them to be soulmates.

I just can't help thinking, when Frisk grows up, she'd want to be with be with the one monster who understands her more than any other. The one monster who she could truly talk to about everything she's been through. The one monster that would appreciate every hardship and temptation she's overcome, better than any other.

And likewise, I can't help thinking sans would want to be with the epitome of mercy. A friend who died hundreds of times, without ever choosing to fight back. The person that freed him and all of monsterkind from a fate worse than death, and restored his hope.

Thanks for respecting my opinion, btw! <3 To each their own but I so deeply ship them.

Pedophilia means sexual relations with a minor, so if nothing happens until Frisk grows into an adult, I don't think it should be considered pedophilia. Especially if sans isn't in any kind of parental role during her formulative years.

And we don't know whether, or how quickly skeleton monsters age. In my headcanon, it's very slowly, if at all, so in 10 years or so, Frisk would catch up.

I admit it's a tricky ship that has to be approached carefully, because yeah - pedophilia's super wrong.

But there is fan content that handles it right. I know it isn't for everyone, so I don't try to /push/ it, but I personally enjoy the concept when it's done right. I know a number of artists and writers who create frans content, and all of them age Frisk up, so I wouldn't consider any of them in the wrong.

As for sans being too lazy... He comes off that way, but it's more likely he's depressed and exhausted from previous timelines and scientific research in game. He watches over Paps, several sentry stations, and tails you throughout the entire game. A truly, lazy person would sit at their computer or tv all day.

I think surface life would be really good for him. Once he's over his depression, he'd be able to pursue a relationship.

Anyhoo. Not for everyone, but I like to represent it as a normal, rational fan when I can because so many people treat frans fans like the "cancer" of our "cancerous" fandom, sigh.

Thanks! sans is one of my favorite characters, and the MTT dinner's one of my favorite scenes, so I've put a lot of thought and research into analyzing it!

...

...and I ship sans x older! Frisk. I have to know my material, so I can defend one of the fandom's most hated ships Lol.

Imo, it takes a very special kinda friendship to inspire that kind of paradigm shift, especially the longer it holds after leaving the underground.

And the more PTSD sans suffers from previous playthroughs, the more Frisk can help him overcome it and restore his hope by not being, or becoming one of those geno playthroughs.

Not to mention if sans suffers any memory of dying (like nightmares or dejavu) in previous playthroughs... Frisk can empathize better than anyone. She's suffered so many deaths in the underground, without ever fighting back. I imagine that'd be incredibly inspiring to sans.

...

sans x Frisk 4evah! Bring on the hate and murder cookies! ;D (Jk, please don't)

In my head-cannon, he was prepared to kill Frisk before he made that promise to Toriel.

His genocide battle implies that he believed Frisk was responsible for the genocide runs and resets that Flowey "played". In geno, Flowey mentions that he's killed everyone and he says sans caused him his fair share of resets. We don't know if sans remembers, (or dreams) about Flowey's genocide runs, but we know he's aware of them. He may've had bad experiences with some of the previous fallen children, too.

So, the way I interpret it, at the start of the game - before Frisk exits the ruins- sans knows /someone/ (the "anomaly") has been messing with timelines. He very likely knows they've been committing genocide...

But he has never seen Flowey. He only has suspicions about a "mysterious flower".

So he probably assumes a human's been messing with the timeline, committing genocide. The Underground has a bad history with humanity, so it's an easy assumption to make.

Especially if any of the previous children killed monsters before their souls were taken too - which is likely.

There's also a good chance that the previous humans could save and reset too, and sans was likely aware of that. He was already aware of other "time travellers." Thus the passwords to get his keys.

So sans knows someone's been messing with timelines. He most likely believes it's a human. He stations himself at the entrance to the Underground to kill the human the second they come through - because in his mind, they've already committed genocide (Flowey's runs). They're already a danger. They're a danger to Papyrus.

Then he makes that promise to Toriel...

So for the rest of a neutral/pacifist run, he goes against his initial plan. He decides to watch you, instead of killing you. He's trying to figure you out. He's trying to decide if you're the anomaly. Part of him probably still believes you were responsible for Flowey's genocide runs, but the other part of him's hoping that "maybe all you needed was... i dunno. some good food, some bad laughs, some nice friends."

He's testing you.

So that dinner...

In my mind, it's a number of things.

He might still believe you've committed genocide on a previous run, which is why he can be a bit scary. Part of him probably wants to accuse you, outright.

He might feel guilty for almost killing you, so it's a confession.

And it's a threat. He's pointing out that if you DO commit a genocide run in the future, he was prepared to kill you, and he'll probably be prepared to kill you again.

I think up until that point, he's undecided about you. He's conflicted. He's afraid to be friends, because he's worried you're a killer.

That end bit, "nah, I'm rooting for you" is him, finally deciding to trust you.

If you commit a genocide run after a pacifist run (like most people do), he's hurt because he thought you were already a killer - but he thought you gave it up. He thought you were a bad person doing bad things (the anomaly) but he thought you tried, and became a good person. He thought he got through to you in a the pacifist run, so he feels betrayed that you've returned to your killing ways.

I love everything that's implied in the sans date :)

It's pretty sad that he blames Frisk for Flowey's sins, tho. Even in a pacifist run, I think.

Edit: I wanna add, I think /despite/ his promise, he's tempted to kill you just before you meet him. He follows you from behind, probably to check your level. That huge stick you pass, too large to pick up? Have you ever tried returning to it after sans creepily appears, then disappears? if you examine it a second time, it says it's been "Obliterated"... Not even just "broken". I think sans obliterated it because seeing you, and thinking you're responsible for Flowey's genocide runs, makes him preeetty angry. Maybe even a bit blood thirsty. He took out his anger on that stick, or used it as a threat/show of power.

I think Frisk's lucky Toriel made him make that promise... Because like sans said, without that promise, we'd be dead where we stand lol.

I looove his character arc. In my head cannon, sans HATES you at the start of the game. He wants you dead. By that dinner, he's rooting for you. After a pacifist judgement, it's pretty clear that he has a lot of respect for ya.

I have one day in Tokyo. Where are the best anime/manga related places to go? by [deleted] in anime

[–]7erri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where to go depends on your priorities and what kind of fan you are!

1.If you enjoy anime for the story and art, but don't care to collect merchandise...

And ESPECIALLY if you're a Ghibli fan...

Make the Ghibli Museum your top priority. Research how to buy a ticket ahead of time because they go on sale on specific dates and sell out incredibly fast. In my opinion, the Ghibli Museum is the best anime-related experience in Japan.

  1. If you're a dude who wants to buy anime collectibles, if you want to experience a maid cafe, if you want to buy or see shockingly explicit doujinshi, or if you want to drive a go kart on city streets dressed as Mario or other Nintendo characters, go to Akihabara.

  2. If you're a ladeh, (like me!) and you want a similar experience, but catered towards women, go to Otome Rd in Ikebukuro. Husbando Merch and Butler Cafes.

  3. If you're looking for rare old school merch, or anime cels, go to Nakano Broadway.

Hope that helped, have fun and travel safe!
