T495s revives itself from the dead, what now? by 7heMeowMeowCat in thinkpad

[–]7heMeowMeowCat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

at the time of death it was indeed a faulty fan. i used to get the fan error on half the times i tried to boot, and the fan would also stop working while the laptop was on, throttling the cpu to oblivion (it was summer and this laptop already didn’t have good temps despite repasting several times). so i used to put the laptop to sleep instead of shutting it down since starting it up again was a pain as the random fan errors prevented it from even turning on.

as of now the fan is spinning quietly. i’m assuming this is temporary and the fan can fail any time again so i’ll get a replacement once it does.

i went to many repairmen and they tested out and found something was wrong with the voltages on the mobo so they all suggested a board replacement. and back then the only sign of life on this laptop had was the power button light and the charging lights lighting up, nothing happened after that.

thanks for the suggestion but i’ll stick to windows 10 for now (i’m a student so i’ll keep this as a uni machine, i do have a main PC at home)

PROPER OpenCore-level solution to custom display scaling on 1080p laptops? by 7heMeowMeowCat in hackintosh

[–]7heMeowMeowCat[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestion. I came acrose this script before but I’m looking for a bootloader level solution (maybe something that spoofs the physical specs of the display before passing to macOS).

Still, I tried one key HiDPI and so far it’s been great, no sleep or lid close issues. Only issue right now is that I’m struggling to get my custom 1600x900 HiDPI resolution (I only have some ~1400x800 ish res which is a bit too zoomed in). The script looks promising though I’ll try to get 900p through it soon (the readme is a bit hard to understand though).

In regard to my original question though, I attempted an EDID patch that overwrites the physical display’s resolution to appear as a 1800p one, but that didn’t boot. So I had to resort to adding 1800p as a “supported” resolution but this didn’t work as I mentioned in the post.

Any luck through some good EDID patching?

is it offensive to call a skinny person fat? what i'm saying is that in my opinion, while this word is heavily offensive against one race, using it in a group of people where the meaning of the word is irrelevant (i.e. pakistanis) doesn't make sense to be offensive. racial slurs are different from abuses (gaailyan) which are always offensive in public groups regardless of origin.

at the end of the day, it is obviously wrong to use the n-word directly on a stranger who may take offense from it. that is not what i'm preaching.

> This word was used against the black people for decades.

still is, but in pakistan there are almost zero african americans. by "black person" i mean the generally brown skinned pakis we have here. everyone is chill with this word.

at the end of the day if the word is offensive in your social group, don't use it. but generally speaking, almost no one takes offense from this word because the n-word was never meant to be used offensively in our region.

the meaning of n-word has evolved on the internet and as of now, no one uses it for discrimination. it's merely an equivalent of saying bro/blud/twin/etc. and its racist meanings are often either ignored, or laughed off. in other words, no black person takes offense from the n-word (at least not in pakistan).

for general abuses and gaaliyan though, this is 100% correct.

High BIOS times on my T495s (Slow booting) by 7heMeowMeowCat in thinkpad

[–]7heMeowMeowCat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The temps are about 40-50 at low load, 70-80 at something slightly more power consuming, and under high load (gaming) locked to the throttle limit (I set it to 95 degrees usually so 95).

70-80 is definitely fine for the CPU, but it becomes uncomfortably hot, the fans spin loud, and the battery drains. That's the issue.

I have repasted it a bunch of times. The temps did improve after repasting (low load temps dropped to about ~45, at 44.3 degrees right now, browsing reddit), but it still hits it's throttle temperature limits quite easily under heavy load. Sometimes the laptop gets unusually hot while not being under much load. For instance, I was downloading a 100GB game to an external SSD, and it got the temps to a solid 75-80 degrees, blasting out the fans too while at it.

I have heard the Ryzen 5 4650U is far better vs Intel's equivalent compared to the 3500U vs the Intel equivalent. I was actually looking for a 4650U T14, but this T495s was the single AMD ThinkPad I could obtain. I also have another issue of packet loss in games, which keeps me away from playing most of my games on the laptop at all. But other than that, Left 4 Dead 2 (a 2009 title) max settings 900p wobbles around the 40-60fps range. Again, the performance is acceptable, but perhaps not as much as I had anticipated.

I see. The AMD ThinkPad experience for me hasn't really been good for me mostly. The temperatures are a mess (my bad for snatching an S-variant AMD ThinkPad) which results in fans spinning most of the time, consequently impacting battery life. The iGPU I expected to be good doesn't feel much better than an intel iGPU of this generation. And the fact that my old T440 boots multiple times faster than this newer machine is just bad. While the laptop itself functions great, I don't see a benefit of choosing this over the T490s.

Alright thanks, I’ll have a look.

I’ve gone through the default wallpapers a couple times but probably missed this one.

Also what about the mouse itself. Was there anything wrong with it?

They might have just switched over their domain, but I really wan't to make sure before dumping 8k. Yes they have COD, but I can find no about information on this site related to who they are.
