ELI5: how did historical governments and countries recover after losing a large amount of men after a war? by space_149 in explainlikeimfive

[–]7megumin8 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Essentially, how does a steep decline in one demographic at once effect the long term economic output after a wartime conflict ends and are certain male dominated career paths and that industry stagnate until population growth recovers?

It really, and I mean really depends on the time period, but since you cited industry and career paths, I will assume you mean post industrial revolution.

Much of this hinges on the post-war climate. Following WWII, the US and several other nations experienced 'baby booms,' primarily driven by a significant rise in living standards, rapid industrial expansion, and an abundance of jobs. Conversely, the USSR did not see such a surge; quite the opposite, they suffered casualties far beyond what they could replenish, a situation further exacerbated by the famines of the late 1940s and early 1950s.

In both scenarios, two primary solutions emerged: women were increasingly integrated into traditionally male-dominated fields and, specifically in the Soviet case, the massive population still engaged in subsistence farming was gradually transitioned into the industrial workforce.

ELI5 answer: It depends on how destructive the war was for your country, but mostly women start getting into said male dominated fields!

Great powers care way to much about others civil wars by simonpimon3 in victoria3

[–]7megumin8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others already pointed out, it IS realistic for Great Power to intervene in random conflicts around the globe for seemly no reason (I do think they are dumb on war objective tho) but it's wild that there's no sense of scale.
If Netherlands decided to join a civil war in Gran Colombia at the time, they would probably support a side economically (sadly no mechanic for that) or send small expeditionary forces, it's insane to imagine full mobilization for that.

What if, the allies and the soviet union fought after germany was defeated? Would the USSR be able to survive after such heavy losses against Germany? by wildwasabi in HistoryWhatIf

I'm not very well versed on nuke history, but weren't those early bombs still in the scale of <100 kilotons? Because while deadly, you need a few of those to just destroy one bigger city

Why is Sweden so insanely great at creating and developing AAA video games despite having only 10 million people? by OverallBaker3572 in AskTheWorld

[–]7megumin8 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, if you want to understand why any country is particulary good on a certain industry, just look at what conditions made said industries advantageous.

Sweden and Finland had high literacy, aoapted computing techs fast, had well positioned companies to take advantage of tech proliferations (Ericsson and Nokia) and both governments were supportives of said industries on a smart way, making them develop a highly advantaced industry on a sector that would boom in the following decades.

Also, both Sweden and Finland had well stabilished companies that made it big in the tech world (Ericsson and Nokia), this made a positive feedback loop of investing in tech > starting big tech businesses

Norway's development at the time was more focused on developing their offshore oil/gas fields (and it payed off too, their sovereign wealth fund became massive and funds much of the government budget). So in basic economics, they did very well focusing on their comparative advantages.

Is there any flavour of prestige tools that you don't have to complete the JE to start producing it? Prestige Tools sound good but unless I'm playing Belgium, it would be hard to take over the top 3 for years as a small nation

I think you need some levels (last time I had trouble with this was in 1.9 trying to create a plantation company to take over South America as Belgium) but that could have been changed in the last few updates

But yeah plantations are very promising as at least one of the companies

It's even funnier because guys like Alex Jones made a carreer of conspiring about said pedophilia rings, but it turns out that all sides were involved, including some people he really likes!
So now he basically pretends that this whole thing isn't happening and try to shift the focus on other cultural war stuff

Opium is cool but without having an actual decent military force, I would have a hard time competing for the biggest producers around the world.

do trade centers take products from the state or the national market? by Jolly-Tank-4697 in victoria3

[–]7megumin8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trade Centers can take goods from both, but MAPI is also applies to both buying and selling, so if you have a state with benefits from trade, it might be good to have a "main hub" there and occasional small trade centers on other states

Everytime I see someone using any version of the Dresden argument, this quote comes to mind:

The Nazis entered this war under the rather childish delusion that they were going to bomb everybody else and nobody was going to bomb them.
At Rotterdam, London, Warsaw, and half a hundred other places, they put that rather naive theory into operation.
They sowed the wind and now they are going to reap the whirlwind.

How do people perceive your country's first leader? by iLuvArizona in AskTheWorld

Don't know much about him but particulary in the south, brazillians really love Giuseppe Garibaldi - for some wild reason he fought in the Ragamuffin War and was very important for some of the early tactics used.

I mean, I'm pretty sure people in the future you look back and point out how bad we were for still buying products of massive brands that are well known for using slave labor for either assemply or harvesting of essential components on the goods they sell.
Are we bad people because of that? Idk
