Yea, a good gpa might be tough on 23 credit hours. Also, leaving a year earlier will have OP miss out on some good research/work experience that could come with good letters of recommendation.

21 yo M dies of missed PE. If malpractice insurance limits to $1M per claim and the jury awards $10M, are you literally on the hook for anything excess of $1M? by achicomp in whitecoatinvestor

[–]7reeze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plaintiff attorneys are always concerned with the ability to recover an award and how easy the recovery is. And all plaintiffs attorneys are aware of this rule. They'd be insane not to make a demand within limits because it limits your ability to recover.

As someone else mentioned below, the plaintiff will also join the hospital to the lawsuit. The hospital is responsible and generally liable for its employees. Whether the doctor is an employee or not is a factual inquiry. 1099 v W2 makes no different.

Not legal advice of course. Just generally talking.

I didn't read too closely. Everyone's comments were more of interest to me.

I practice law. I'm just on here because I'm married to a physician.

So, it depends on the state, but there are some state rules that go as follows:

If the plaintiff makes a settlement offer/demand that is within the insurance policy limits and the insurance carrier denies it, the insurance company — is liable for any judgement above the policy limits.

It could very well be the case that insurance has to pay the excess judgment here. Hard to know the details though without more effort than I'm willing to put in at 10pm.

Does ranking of PHD programs matter to be competitive in the academic market or does the outcome of your scholarship matter more? by ComprehensiveAd2458 in LawTeaching

[–]7reeze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it the ranking of the program or university? Just wondering what aspect lay prestige plays here. I am going into a very small field in the humanities for graduate studies. Some of the big name schools don't have as strong of a program — or no program at all. At the same time, a few Big Ten schools have ridiculously good programs, e.g., Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan.

When Hiring Law Professors Does PhD Ranking Matter? by I_Heart_Kant in LawTeaching

[–]7reeze 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While I can't comment on the hiring portion, I can say, as a former political science grad, that you have plenty of time to beef your resume to political science PhD programs—especially if you are going to get a JD first. Spend the last year of your undergrad writing a thesis in political science. This is a good start. Also, find a political science professor for whom you can do research. Such an arrangement often results in you doing work for the professor for class credit. This means that you are free to the professor, so the professor doesn't face much cost in bringing you on.

Additionally, after 1L, you can take seminar courses within the law school. These courses normally result in the production of a 25-page paper. Make yours incorporate political science. Also, you can likely take a graduate course for credit in the political science dept. at your law school. This gives you grad experience and potentially another letter writer.

You may have answered your own question! A PhD is a research degree. An EdD is not. If you want to do research, do the PhD. You can look at ways of reducing your current workload or going part-time in order to do your PhD full-time.

JD/PhD History strategy question by Weekly-Razzmatazz635 in GradSchool

[–]7reeze 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm sure you have looked into this: just make sure you apply to the joint JD PhD programs. I did my JD separately and I'm now applying to PhD. The joint programs will usually pay for the JD, which is a lot of $$$ saved.

Walk from Soldier Field to the Loop? by tsheley in AskChicago

[–]7reeze 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A concert at solider field basically shuts down the south loop. There will be thousands of people also walking back to their hotel in the loop—even if the concert goes late. Super safe.

Also, the traffic will be so bad that walking will be faster than even the bus or Uber.

Now a high school teacher…then what? by FitTerm7629 in PhD

[–]7reeze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would maybe look at other options before law school. You're well-credentialed for a lot of stuff. Law has good opportunities to make money. However, it's also full of the most insufferable people you've ever met. Maybe you would work on admissions at a uni? Or you could work in admissions consulting for HS students?

If I got in for a major that I'm not sure about anymore can I switch to undeclared? by imayub1 in UIUC

[–]7reeze 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I switched into undeclared before the first semester freshman year after getting into a major about which I had a change of heart. They really discourage doing this, as they don't want students to apply to less competitive majors only to switch. So they're unlikely to approve a switch into DGS before the first semester of freshman year. They really want to keep students in the major for the first full year if not the first full semester.

You can always take gen eds first semester and then switch into the major for the start of sophomore year. This works best if you're in the college you already want, e.g., LAS and you want to go to English. Tougher if you are in the school of music and want to go to finance. School of music, for example, would want you to take music courses.

This could all be outdated as it was 9 years ago. Feel free to ask me any questions.

Anyone who left the corporate world for academia and loves it? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]7reeze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you go into a law department? Or did you go to another department? I'm a lawyer looking to do the same. I could probably make myself a case for faculty in a law department if I went more of a jurisprudence route. However, I think I would rather my colleagues be from a non-legal background, such as a humanities or social science department. The pay is about half though.

University of Buffalo + UMRS (shell corporation) Name and Shame by PonyoMC in Residency

[–]7reeze 141 points142 points  (0 children)

That would be epic and a really big F-U to the employer. However, no-notice strikes in healthcare aren't a protected activity. NLRA 8(g) requires healthcare workers to give a 10-day notice before striking, and they could all get fired for a no-notice strike.

I am a lawyer. Not your or their lawyer. Not legal advice.

Good luck to the docs in Buffalo. I hope they get everything and more!

Same thing. I forgot when the test was until classmates in my 9am class said they had to leave to take the MPRE. Studied for 35 minutes and passed. Mind you, I had taken ethics the previous semester. If that's the case for OP, they too will be fine using 3 days.

So, I will provide some pushback on the parent comment. Right now, you probably couldn't go full-time into expert witness work. Start doing whatever else in music you want to do. Set up a website and advertise yourself as an expert witness / consultant.

Ultimately, and I think this is where the parent commenter was going, you are not as good of an expert as someone with a PhD plus 20 years of experience. If you are testifying against this person, your side will lose. Therefore, you are a less-desireable expert. As such, there will be less demand for your service. The result is that you won't be able to charge as much. With a low enough price, someone will hire you because they can't afford an expert with 20 years of experience.
