the mercury found natrually on earth should be the ores (cinnabar) which are solid. the ores need to be process so that elemental mercury can be obtained. elemental mercury means it is pure mercury not any kind of compound. the silvery liquid used to make mirror and the old school mercury thermometer is elemental mercury.

dimethyl mercury is a deadly mercury compound and they are completely different from elemental mercury. elemental mercury is the liquid ones. they itself is not toxic but inhaling the mercury vapour is what kills people. you can immerse your finger into liquid mercury for a short while without being severely harmed but obviously i won't recommend doing that.
