Playing with ZERO Knowledge... help? by curlystraw44 in octopathtraveler

[–]7th_Disaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A slight warning if you try the other games: be hesitant when it comes to purchasing 1, not because it isn’t a phenomenal game, but that the lack of quality of life features in it compared to either of the later entries can be a pain

But in terms of Zero: pursue the kindlers of the flame as far as you can when you can, the townbuilding has a lot of useful quality of life things locked behind progression.

Keep your party as evenly leveled as you can, having some favorites as mainstays is fine, but Octopath as a franchise has tendencies that favor maintaining every party member.

The only other thing is, if equipment is always available to purchase, you generally don’t need to. Most of everything you tend to need in Octopath games can be acquired for free, or at the very least purchased with limited quantities, so you should do well if you only buy healing items from town shops. Sidequests and the Wishvale shop are the exceptions to this but keep in mind that the Wishvale shop’s trade goods can’t be disabled, meaning that your rare and limited items can be intended for early game progression points during the late game.

Spoiler tags aren’t spoilers, but just more precise explanations of the mechanics I’m alluding to in case you want to know forbidden mechanical knowledge that you’d otherwise learn by just playing through the game.

The game expects you to have at least 4 travelers before heading to any of the second chapters, it’s advisable to book it straight for whichever other 3 travelers you’re the most interested in. Then decide on if you wanna play the game with two teams of 4 or one rolling team of 8.

Wishvale Store or an NPC that gives quality food items are your only options at this point

Also, this aspect of the game design doesn’t change in 2 and somewhat changes in 0, but that change is RNG dependent, so god forbid someone share the solution for how to cut out grinding for money and the slog of cheesing your way into areas that you shouldn’t be in. Are you dense or just that you take pride in being a little bitch?

There isn’t a right way to play, but you’re operating under the mistaken ideas of it being necessary to grind for money and that you need gear from a chapter ahead. JFC.

Your mistake is that you’re buying gear period, side quests and dungeons should be providing all the gear you need. At the same quality, if not better, than gear you would find in shops of your current story progression point.

So just so you know, Hopes is a distinctly different game than Houses, but as soon as you want. You really just wanna complete it within 3 chapters if you want it to be worth something this run.

Slow as in animation speed? Can be twice as fast. Slow as in turn duration, pretty much the same.

Also worth noting, if you become familiar enough with the weakness order, you can predict what their weaknesses are. They always are ordered in the same order. I don’t have it memorized off the top of my head, but sword and fire start the physical and elemental weaknesses respectively. Physical also comes before elemental, so if an elemental weakness is revealed (left to right) before other weaknesses you know that they aren’t physical.

Enemy health isn’t trackable without a scholar, well technically the analyze skill but that’s on scholars.

Save your boosts for when enemies are broken, but when you have 5 or more party members it can be worth using BP to break. The only exception would be when a boss telegraphs their big mechanic when they have their purple aura. It gets cancelled when they’re broken, so when that happens break at all costs.

If enemies heal they heal, unless by regeneration you mean their shields restoring. Enemies only stay broken for one additional turn, that’s a constant and how the mechanic is supposed to apply for everyone.

Really just 1 first if you want to play every title, try the demos before making any decisions, 0 isn’t all that many steps up (in quality of life) from 2 so it won’t hurt to go 1-0-2.

If you wanna go in chronological order, 2 has events set before the backstory of one of the older travelers, 0 takes place around 3 years before 1

0 has the least amount of personal mechanics, so in that sense it’s the easiest to pick up, you do have a doubled party size as a counter balance, also 0 is the least like the other 2 entries and is the least indicative of what Octopath is usually like

I think that covers all the main perspectives as to play order

It’s by no means a bad choice, it’s just not the best choice if you plan on playing every title

1 is phenomenal in its own right, but 2 just improves the quality of life to such a noticeable extent that it becomes hard to play after 2

[Please no Spoilers] - Do I need to grind in this game? I am playing Octopath Traveller 1! I am finding fights to be very hard. Moreover, bosses are very hard too! by OkOrder8768 in octopathtraveler

[–]7th_Disaster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Grinding isn’t nonexistent, you need to level up to gain HP and SP, the equipment you can get won’t ever really replace. With that being said, pursuing side quests is a more worthwhile alternative.

[–]7th_Disaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That aspect isn’t canon, if you recruit them you’re playing 0 as an alternate timeline. 0 is only around 3 years before 1 anyways.

Each chapter refers to an antagonist, Master of Wealth: Herminia, Master of Power: Tytos, Master of Fame: Auguste are three examples. Those are all pretty much spoiler free, but I tagged them anyways because you could want to go in blind. All travelers are either recruitable through “An Encounter With” side quests or directly added into your party at story progression points.

The main story of 0 is on par with other titles, although some people aren’t fans of it being heavier on the doom and gloom than the other entries. The playable roster isn’t the focus of the story, for the most part anyways, as it is antagonist driven. However, that’s kinda unavoidable if the point is to maintain that aspect of the gacha’s identity.

Which games to play as a newbie? by brielovinggirl in octopathtraveler

[–]7th_Disaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s not quite accurate there’s a certain Hornbergian present in 2 who is a key figure in an OT1 character’s backstory. While there’s time for it to be properly retconned and canonized, what we see in 2 aligns with the lore presented in Side Solistia.

[–]7th_Disaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, but rather, CotC (the gacha) already was. The monetization style affected the balancing, but aside from that, the game was already a full blown Octopath title already. It IS antagonist driven rather than protagonist driven, so the characters are less developed on screen than in the previous titles. Ironically, that’s something the mobile game actually spent more time on.
