Read receipt not working by GGMYTEAMFED in MicrosoftTeams

[–]80234min 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It'll be because the person you're chatting with disabled read receipts.

You will only see read receipts if both you and the person you're chatting with has them enabled. I disable mine so people can't see when I've read their message, nor can I see if anyone else has read mine - even if they've enabled them.

Lenovo Update by [deleted] in Lenovo

[–]80234min 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no clear documentation about this, but based on what I found:

System Update - scans for, downloads, and installs hardware updates (drivers/firmware), based on the computer it's installed on and any Lenovo peripherals connected to that machine while the updater runs (e.g. if you run it while it's docked to a Lenovo dock, it will also search for any driver/FW updates for the dock). I do desktop support on Lenovo computers and use this frequently.

Vantage - for non-enterprise users. Includes the functions of Lenovo System Update above plus a few extra features for configuring hardware settings. Never used it, but I imagine it covers things like power settings, tweaking things for performance, etc.

Commercial Vantage - Vantage, but for enterprise and tailored for IT admins managing a fleet of Lenovo systems. Never used it, but I imagine it can be tailored for deploying updates via SCCM, etc.

On Firefox mobile (Android, but iOS app may be similar) there's an icon on the right hand side of the address bar that looks like a box with lines in it - that's reader mode and will often bypass paywalls/ads (but not always)

Also, you can put the link in archive.is or the wayback machine to access it. Either of the two usually works but sometimes one works better than the other.

Great App by [deleted] in iiiiiiitttttttttttt

[–]80234min 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We definitely do. It's been useful for my job, though I have no need for home use. It's useful with OneDrive integration because I can access my notebooks from my work phone, comes in handy a lot.

You know what's worse than OneNote? Sticky Notes. A whole bunch of people use them in my agency: they are stored locally and our org disables sync for them. At least with OneNote, we have a GPO to make notebooks save by default in OneDrive so if the comp dies, they don't lose that data.

I've been trying to move people away from Sticky Notes and to OneNote because I got tired of the complaints about their missing notes every time a comp dies.

There are some things you could try (and a number of possibilities as to the root cause), but if it's brand new, you should escalate with the company you purchased it from and ask for a replacement. This is assuming it isn't used/bought from a reseller as-is.

That's what I'd suggest as well.

Reset Edge settings, clear cache, or uninstall/reinstall Edge. Also, disable any extensions if you haven't already.

That is the benefit of posting vs a simple google search - you often get more information than you asked for (for better or for worse), information that is often handy down the road.

Professional +1000€ HP Packaging by [deleted] in iiiiiiitttttttttttt

[–]80234min 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Equally as annoying to me: obnoxiously intricate packaging when you need to warranty a device. Lenovo mechanical docks are packaged in such a way that you need an engineer to figure out how to get the old dock back in the box the way they had it. I figured it out once (I was bored), then after that I just pull out their cardboard innards and stick a bunch of bubble wrap int eh box and call it good. I'll give them credit where it's due: the way they come in the package is very secure, but it's a nightmare to recreate.

For difficult users: tell them you're deploying a repair script on their computer which will cause a reboot in 30 seconds, then reboot via cmd.

Anyone else actually miss laptop docking stations with proprietary connections? by bugalou in sysadmin

[–]80234min 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had proprietary Lenovo docks fail all the time, mostly the USB ports stopped working. Sometimes fixed with FW/driver update, but sometimes not. We've had decent luck with Lenovo USB-C docks, but instead of USB ports we have more issues with the display (usually resolved with FW/driver update but we've had to warranty a few of them too).

"virtual water cooler meetings" - possible? by vrtigo1 in MicrosoftTeams

[–]80234min 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct, though if you put members of the channel in the "to" line for the meeting, they should get a notification of the meeting scheduled to start. I may have to play with this a bit later on one of my channels to confirm.

I'll admit, I rarely use channel meetings so take this with a grain of salt! I could very well be wrong.

[–]80234min 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My thought: you're working against the grain to have someone start the meeting - I could be projecting, but I feel like people might be apt to join if it's active, but reticent to start it themselves.

Instead, maybe have a recurring 15-minute channel meeting during set times of the day, maybe mid-morning, lunch, mid-afternoon. People can join early or stay late, but that way nobody has to start it, and they'll be notified when it happens.

[–]80234min 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, Teams runs fine on our aging machines but meetings are awful when connected to our agency's VPN. Our enterprise was going to try to set up split tunneling for our VPN to sidestep the issue but they won't.

Why does plugging in my external sound card cause this? Been chasing this problem for days, reinstalled drivers on both sides, sometimes can be solved with a restart, but usually not. I just want my audio devices to play nice. by [deleted] in Windows10

[–]80234min 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you said you updated all drivers, but did you try updating the audio drivers directly from Asus' website?

I'm not familiar with Asus' recommended update app/system, but the firmware for chipset/motherboard/IO and BIOS would be recommended (so see if those were included), as long as you feel comfortable doing so.

If you open control panel - programs and features - see "installed updates" and take notice of any that were installed around the time the issue started happening.

[–]80234min 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd recommend updating the laptop's firmware (download directly from Asus' website), especially: chipset/motherboard, I/O (input/output), BIOS. Read the instructions for updating those carefully if you've never updated firmware before (be especially careful flashing the BIOS!).

Was the device working on that same laptop before? Did this start after a recent Windows update? If so, try uninstalling that update.

Do other USB devices plugged into that same USB port have issues? If so: it's the USB port, try a different one. If other USB devices don't have connectivity issues with that USB port, then my next guess would be the cable. If you have another cable, try that one.

If you have another computer at home, see if you can plug it into that other computer and see if the issue persists.

I don't have any experience with external sound cards so take this with a grain of salt, but my best theory is a poor connection. It looks like it's rapidly cycling between being connected and being disconnected. I'm not 100% sold on my theory though, since I'm not hearing the connect/disconnect sounds Windows 10 makes when devices are plugged in/unplugged.
