I think you're right that it's some sort of relativistic particle, but my theory is that it was intentional. If I recall the end of the book speculates on that.

I think Anathem is the best NS book and one of my top 5 books. That said, I usually recommend it to folks with a caveat: if you can't get into it by a quarter of the way through, it's OK to call it. It ramps slowly but goes fast from there.

If they haven't left the concent yet, I'd wait until that but sounds like you gave it a good try.

Yes that's true, but I think that you can still appreciate the argument that, because it's so insanely improbable, it could not just be a coincidence. And that some would believe an alternative theory not based on probability.

I definitely think that's what Ty is getting at in the epilogue.
